Free Music Notes for A Day Without Rain

Free Music Review: Possession by Default
Hit: 5 Stars

I waited three years for Enya'a latest recording, and I was not disappointed. I agree with others; it is not her best work, but it's NEW! Many of her songs have that same layered vocal pattern (it's her voice, sometimes dubbed over 120 times) that some other artists have all too obviously tried to imitate.

It's all about hooks. Every song that Enya does has one, which is one reason why I have played some of her albums 1,000 times or more in the last 16 years. Her best work is a matter of opinion, but I would call her second prior recording "The Memory of Trees" (1995) unequaled, just above "Sheppard Moon" (1992). On this album, "Wild Child" is one of my favorites, as well as the introductory track, with their hauntingly angelic seventh chords that really have a way of making me homesick (I'm an angel in a man's body, remember?) This album of itself for me dissolves all hatred and stress within my soul, which is why I use Enya as my Number One Prescription. I bought it simply because it was Enya, Enya anything. The only thing even close to negative I would comment is that the entire recording is only 34 minutes long, but I can compensate simply by putting on REPEAT ALL. I have listened to "A Day Without Rain" sometimes four times in a row, and found that two hours went by like it was ten minutes.

It was interesting that when this first album came out, three of her other albums were suddenly pulled into the top ten in the New Age section. One artist has four albums in the top ten. Has anyone else or some other group EVER done that? Not even the Beatles? Enough said. Buy it today without thinking. #1 recommendation.

Free Music Review: Enya's best so far
Hit: 5 Stars

This is the Enya album that turned me on to her music. It is the best of the best - which unfortunately for me became the standard by which I have judged all her other music. All of the tracks are excellent except perhaps "Tempus Vernum" which seems like the requisite "Chanting Clone Warriors on Parade" track that she has put on several of her CD's - still an interesting track though. I had no interest in New Age music until I heard this CD and Lorenna McKennitt's, "Book of Secrets". (I still have no interest in worshiping the creation rather than the Creator - but the music, the melodies of these artists can't be ignored) I have listened to this CD till my ears dissolved. Since then I have purchased other Enya CD's but this remains the best.
Perhaps the only criticism that one can make of Enya's music is that it sometimes drifts in the direction of mindless vapidity. Nonetheless the haunting lushness of the melodies and the quality of Enya's vocal work still make this CD a "5" - and on this CD the lyrics of many of the songs would stand alone as works of poetry - which is not as true of her earlier CD's.
BUT BEWARE ! I've heard is a "disco" version of the 3rd track "Only Time" being played on the radio. It stinks. Like some bozo who pours white sugar on a fruit salad thinking it needs to be sweeter. I totally don't recommend that version of this CD if such a thing is available.
"A Day Without Rain" will probably become a classic. In time you will no doubt hear many renditions of these melodies done by other artists. I'd recommend it for almost anyone.
Also the CD comes with a good booklet that contains all the lyrics.

Free Music Review: A Day Without Rain ~ Enya
Hit: 5 Stars

When Enya became a singer on her own, it was a great idea. I'm not saying Clannad has bad music (I love their music), but they do well on their own and Enya has such great music, all of her albums are worth adding to your collection.
At first when I heard Enya, it was always in the car - my dad played it. I always thought Enya was a band or something - I didn't even know the name that well. Then I was given this CD for my birthday, and I loved it. I then started listening to all of Enya's music more and more.
Though this CD is only about a half hour long, it's worth it to buy it. The songs are all great.
1. A Day Without Rain; Is instrumental. But it's very pretty.

2. Wild Child; "Ever take the time, ever stop and listen, ever feel alive, and you've nothing missing. You don't need a reason, let the day go on and on".

3. Only Time; Who can tell, only time. This is a great song.

4. Tempus Vernum; I'm not sure what language this is in, but it sounds very neat and dark.

5. Deora Ar Mo Chroi; is in Spanish, and is beautiful.

6. Flora's Secret; is a song about love, and one of the best on the track.

7. Fallen Embers; is a pretty, slow, song.

8. Silver Inches; is instrumental, but the way it 'bounces' makes it such a fun song to listen to again and again.

9. Pilgrim; is a pretty song, but it is slow and can seem boring.

10. One By One; is another song about love, and is a pretty and fun song.

11. Lazy Days; doesn't everybody want to go back to their lazy days? This sun is so fun, it's great.

Free Music Review: Enya shines!
Hit: 5 Stars

OK, so Enya uses the same style of layered vocals and synthesizer accompaniment on this recording as on her previous offerings. Who do you want her to sound like, Madonna or Celine Dion? This listener doesn't and is thrilled (and relieved) that her style hadn't changed. How can you improve on an original style that has so impacted New Age music and caught the attention of the music industry?

The discerning listener will discover that "A Day Without Rain" is quite probably Enya's best recording yet. Every song shines, and her ethereal, pristine vocals communicate a refined purity and sacred ambiance you won't find in other "popular" music being recorded today. I'm thrilled that she has remained true to herself, in spite of her commercial success, and has produced another work of art that has the repeat appeal destined to ensure another bestseller (and perhaps win another Grammy?).

Four years was a long time to wait, but Enya's songwriting talent shines in original tunes that are destined to become classics. These are simply the best tunes she has ever composed! There is lighthearted frivolity here ("Wild Child," "One by One," "Lazy Days"). There is romance ("Only Time," "Fallen Embers"). There are wise insights ("Pilgrim," "Only Time"). There are strong instrumentals ("Day Without Rain, "Silver Inches"). There is simply beautiful singing ("Deora Ar Mo Chroi," "Fallen Embers," "Pilgrim."). This recording is a winner from the first thrilling second to the last. A rare gem.

Free Music Review: Enya strikes again....with a bang!
Hit: 5 Stars

After 5 years of anticipation from fans, the long-awaited album has finally hit the shelves. And it has turned out well worth the wait. Enya's ethereal and layered style is of course ever present in the record but this time around, the flavor and style are a little different. A Day Without Rain tends to, at times, gravitate towards more of a pop sound rather than the usual mysterious New Age atmosphere. I was particularly impressed with the song Fallen Embers because it is different than most of Enya's songs in the voice department. In stead of that layered harmonized vocal sound, we have Enya singing solo, one voice. It is, in my opinion, one of the purest sounds she has achieved thus far. All of the songs together weave a story about one's journey through love. Wild Child tells the joy and freedom of love while ONly Time of how only time tells. Tempus Vernum is almost like the stormy weather that all relationships must endure and Tears on My Heart, the calm after the storm. Flora's Secret is a refreshing tale of the secret exchange and reverie of lovers and Fallen Embers the sweet lament of that dream showering to the ground in glittering fragmentsOne by One and Pilgrim are self explanatory, and Lazy Days is a beautiful peice that contrasts with the rest of the album that really does feel like a lazy summer's day. All in all, I would say that this album has been well worth waiting for. Enya's slight deviation from her traditionally ethereal style is quite refreshing, and at the same time, familiar sounds and styles are still there. Very good work. Bravissimo!
