Free Music Notes for And Winter Came

Free Music Review: Beautiful as a snowflake
Hit: 5 Stars

When I heard of the new Enya album I became instantly happy and quite ready to let the Winter in. Finnaly it came, as Roma said. It's a beginning.

A Winter themed album. Quite interesting for Enya, even if it's a favourite theme for her (and for me). As I was thinking if the songs were more joyful or sober, I couldn't imagined that they could be so beautiful and sober at the same time.
As someone had written before - this new cd is more closer to "Watermark" than her previous cds. It's not a pop cd. Indeed it's sober, far from the poppiest "Amarantine". I think the arrangements are extremelly good. The layer of voices and the mood are as beautiful as a snowflake.

My personal favourites are "And Winter Came", the title theme, once again instrumental. The single "Trains And Winter Rains" is a very good song with catchy melodic rhythm. "Dreams Are More Precious" is another beautiful ethereal piece. "Stars And Midnight Blue" and "The Spirit Of Christmas Past" are the most wonderful songs in the album I must say, being "Stars And Midnight Blue" one of the most adult songs of Enya. Yes, it's that good!
Sadly I have to say that "My! My! Time Flies!" is the worst song ever written by Enya. I would had drop this one out off the album. The cheer song, although very American, "White Is In The Winter Night" is a gracious song ready to be sung on the holidays. In the other hand is the track "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" wich is a more religious song, ence more European. Hope everyone would love this album as much as I do. Thank you Enya. Have a terrific Winter time!

Free Music Review: A Holiday Gift from Enya
Hit: 5 Stars

It's been a while for a new release from Enya, and this collection with a winter/holiday theme is well worth the wait. It has the smooth, ethereal sound associated with Enya and in general focuses on a holiday theme. Most tracks have a winter/Christmas theme. The only track which does not seem to fit the holiday theme, at least in my view, is "My! My! Time Flies!" but it's a good track and I suppose does fit a New Year's Theme which would be both winter and holiday.

For me, the two tracks which are outstanding would be her version of "O Come O Come Emmanuel" in both English and Latin and "Oiche Chiuin" (a Gaelic version of "Silent Night")."O Come O Come" has a haunting and beautiful sound to it but also has a sense of the longing the hymn is meant to evoke. "Oiche Chiuin" shows that what could arguably be the best Christmas carol of all time has a universal beauty in its simplicity. The original tracks in the collection are similar to other releases: similar in originality, style, and quality. The tracks are a combination of instrumental only and instrumental and vocal and throughout the collection she remains true to her unique sound and stays clear from gimmicks, something easy to do with a Christmas collection.

Enya devotees will love this new collection, but my guess is that it will have a crossover appeal as well. I know in my collection of Christmas music is varied--as I'm sure is the case of most people. This beautiful, relaxing winter/holiday collection can either sooth or relax or help a person gear up for the holidays.

Enjoy!

Free Music Review: A complete surprise!
Hit: 5 Stars

I have to say that I am totally and very happily surprised by this CD. I am an Enya fan, but when I saw this CD advertised I (mistakenly) took it to be a commercial Christmas album and I did not pay it any attention. However it was given to me as a Christmas present and this is the first day that I have listened to it. I advise anybody else not to write it off the way that I did. Although Christmas and Winter are the themes of the album, these are tracks that you could hear anytime, not just when you have the family around for Christmas drinks.

Every song here reaches the high standards that we expect from Enya. Instrumentation, vocals, arrangement, composition, rhythm, melody - all are outstanding. I will say however that if you do not like Enya then this will not be for you. She does not have a new sound to her, but continues in her usual style.

There are two traditional arrangements (both stunning) and ten new compositions. My favourites at the current time are "White is in the Winter night", "Dreams are more precious", "One toy soldier" and as many other people have said the quirky "My! My! Time Flies!". This should definitely be the next single. I say that these are my favourite tracks now but that could change tomorrow. They are all excellent.

In summary, I would highly recommend this album to anybody (in particular people like me - an Enya fan that was put off by the seemingly commercial theme of the album) except for people who adamantly do not like Enya's music.

Free Music Review: And Winter Came - Most Elegantly Done
Hit: 5 Stars

When Enya releases an album, it's not just a 'release'. It's an event. That is what a music entertainment expert said a few years ago. She was right. The very magnitude of Enya's work and daring to differ on a musical landscape that is otherwise run over by commercialism and mediocrity, is proof. And WInter Came, in essence, is no different than any other Enya's albums. And why should it be? This is Enya. Almost all
the songs on this CD have the signature Enya vocals, extensive, carefully defined layering, ethereal tunes and meaningful content. The Christmas or Holiday season numbers have not just been re-rendered, but redone. They are solid and promising. One Toy SOldier is probably one that everyone will like. Similarly the main (promoted) single Trains and Winter Rains is a usual Enya work, and contains the same methodical and carefully strung beat of an ENya song. The different number is My My Time Flies, and my, does it suprise. Encompassing guitar of all things, it is a revisitation to music of the seventies or sixties if you will. It talks about the concept of how far we have come in history. In my opinion, another jewel to add to their collection for Enya fans. Like a critic or reviewer said. It is relief to the ears to listen to. Cheers and well wishes for a happy season, Enya style.

Free Music Review: I love this cd!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

October 29, 2009 -- I am editing a review that I left several months ago. I still LOVE this CD and have decided to make it my signature gift for this holiday season. If you are looking for holiday gift ideas and want to give a reasonably priced christmas gift that will be thoroughly enjoyed, then this is it! I have even thought that it would make a good Hanukkah gift idea even though it does contain songs such as O Come, O Come Emmanuel and The Spirit of Christmas Past. I think the cd is so good in its entirety that I am overlooking this and feel that even my friends who are celebrating Hanukkah would enjoy it. Since my post, this cd has won many awards including one for the beauty of its cover art. I have found it difficult to get my hands on and Amazon is even limiting sales to 3 cd's. Don't know why. If you can get your hands on it, buy it, wrap it up all pretty and give it to everyone you know!

Early 2009 - I received this cd as a birthday present on January 1, 2009 and I wish I had gotten it before Christmas! It is the perfect Christmas cd but it is also much more than that. I could see myself enjoying this all year round. My favorite song is My! My! Time Flies. A great song!
