Free Music Notes for And Winter CameFree Music Review: Not just a usual, average Christmas Disc Hit: 5 Stars
I do not know what album many people who say that this album is just more of the same are listening to. Of course, it is Enya, and it should sound like her, which it does, but the variation and breadth that the tracks on this CD cover is astounding. I mean, electric guitar??? Since when does Enya use electric guitar? Yet, it clearly works and it is still Enya. From somber and liturgical, to lively and celebratory, this album captures the reflective feel of Christmas without being heavy.
As an Enya album it is excellent. As a Christmas album it is outstanding. I could say that all the tracks offer something to the listener and it would be true. My My Time Flies has the feeling that it belongs in a musical, just VERY upbeat and distinctive. Dreams are More Precious and Last Time by Moonlight are very typical yet beautiful Enya tracks.
If you are a fan, you already have it. If you are looking for some new Christmas tunes because you are tired of the radio playing the same five songs in a loop over and over again, this is outstanding and you might find that you too love Enya. But be warned that once you have crossed over, there is no going back.
Free Music Review: From A person who is not an Enya Fan, I liked it. The Spirit Of The Season! Hit: 5 Stars
From her style and her music sound, there is no mistaking Enya for anyone else. Her compositions, arrangements and orchestrations are fresh, and innovative without going to radical extremes. Of course, she loves to play with new recording techniques and synthesizers but it all blends together with her sound. Everything she does in this album/CD WORKS! All the songs are melodic and they have a beat. They show different moods and textures of the Holiday season. Some are reverent like "The Journey Of The Angels" to the sentimental and wishful "Dreams Are More Precious", "The Spirit Of Christmas Past" to the playful "One Toy Soldier" to the ryhtematic "My! My! How Time Flies!" Her recording of "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" and "Oíche Chiúin (Chorale)" ("Silent Night" in a language that is not English or the orginnal German) are one of the best I ever heard. I know the record company is hyping "Trains and Winter Rains" and "White Is In The Night" but they are not clearly the best on this album. Take that last line as an indication of how good this album is if you happen to like those songs - aka: the rest of the album is as good or is better than those two.
Free Music Review: Winter Stays Hit: 5 Stars
It seems absurd that anyone should need to write a review of an Enya album, since regardless of what one writes the product will sell millions of copies -- but it is worth noting that once again the three individuals -- composer/performer, lyricist, and producer -- have achieved the magic! There is no Loxion to this album, no Gaelic or Latin (at least not at first). If this makes the lyrics immediately accessible it still takes a listen or two to wrap one's head around all the music. Once this happens it is impossible to let go.
One of the nice things about having purchased the album through Amazon -- in my case more a matter of laziness as there are few stores in the isolated area where I live -- was the surprise email that invited one to download an extra free song. This one, O Miraculum, was truly miraculous. Though set to a tune already on the album, the lyrics had nothing to do with Winter. Instead, they celebrated the marvelous journey taken by the Enya troika these past twenty years since Orinoco Flow. A journey under sky, moon, and stars aoross uncharted waters continues. O Miraculum.
Free Music Review: And winter came Hit: 5 Stars
I love Enya's music. I find her music very soothing and comforting to listen to after a long day at the office, or on a snowy winter night. In the last few years, Enya's albums have been a bit uneven for me. They were either a hit or miss with me. This is not the case with AND WINTER CAME. After putting out a couple of holiday themed singles/EPs, I think it was time for a full length holiday album. AND WINTER CAME did not disappoint me. one bit. Although Christmas has come and gone, I still enjoy listening to AND WINTER CAME. I love the title track. The delicate melodies is a great opener for the album. I find her version of "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" very emotionally stirring. Enya's vocals sends chills down my spine. "Dreams are More Precious" is another beautiful ballad reminiscent of Enya's earlier material. Granted the music lacks the Celtic flavor that I have come to love about Enya's music however I can overlook that minor misstep. After a recent dump of some fresh snow where I live, AND WINTER CAME comforts me on this wintery morning with its lush melodies and ethereal vocals by Enya.
Free Music Review: Nice Alternative Christmas Album Hit: 5 Stars
Enya's received quite a bit of criticism from some reviewers for not developing her style into something more fresh with this CD, but from my perspective that wasn't really the purpose of this album. This sounds like Enya- what you loved before is all here.
The nice thing about this CD is that it's a Christmas album, and Enya does a wonderful job of adapting her style to something that is authentically Christmas. That's not the easiest thing to do. How many other artists create corny-sounding, trite, contrived Christmas albums? It's very difficult to create a new sound for Christmas, because Christmas is so deeply nostalgic for the majority of us.
Yet, here, Enya accomplishes music that is wholly Enya and wholly Christmas. This was an absolute joy to hear on Christmas Eve, driving through the snow on the way to Midnight Mass. The entire collection resonates with an ethereal, silvery tone that is perfectly captured in the album artwork. O Come, O Come Emmanuel is breathtaking. I highly recommend this.
