This (aside from hearing the single version of "Phantom Agony") was my introduction to Epica, and I'm sold! Amazing band. And of course their symphonic rock style is perfectly made for a live performance featuring orchestra and choir (unlike, say, Metallica).
Their performance on this double CD set comes in two parts. The first part, taking up 2/3 of the first disc, is a mixture of classical music pieces ("Montagues and Capulets", Verdi's "Dies Irea", Grieg's "In the Hall of the Mountain King") and movie soundtrack pieces ("The Imperial March", medley of "Spiderman"). These are very faithful, yet heavy metal, renditions of these pieces, which, as a fan of bombastic classical music, really impressed me. Their version of "The Imperial March" was spot-on (though maybe slightly shortened) and MUCH better than the metal/symphonic version out there that's attributed to Metallica (search Youtube to find it). PLEASE NOTE, however, that if you buy this album in CD format, you'll find their medley of music from "Pirates of the Caribbean" is not included... it is well worth the dollar to download from Amazon... one of the highlights of this part of the album.
The rest of their performance consists of Epica's own material from the three studio albums that precede this live recording. Amazing stuff: and either they don't have many weak songs in their catalog, or they picked an outstanding set list (or both!). There are no songs here I'm overly inclined to skip; just one excellent song after another. As other reviewers have noted, Simone Simon's voice is stunning... certainly as strong and as beautiful as the other major talents in the genre (for me that includes Tarja Turinen, formerly of Nighwish, Shanon den Adel of Within Temptation, and Floor Jansen of After Forever). I am not really into Mark Jansen's death growls and screams, but the rest of the music more than makes up for it, and he really plays a fairly small role, vocally (appearing in just six songs, and usually just briefly).
This amazing live album is for fans and newcomers alike (IMO, a great introduction to Epica's music). Recommended for any fan of bombastic heavy metal.
