Free Music Review: they've still got the touch
Hit: 5 Stars

even though not as visible; like a lot of recording acts, Erasure still make great music that's just as modern and fun to listen to as it ever was

Free Music Review: MY 1,000th REVIEW! WHEE!!!
Hit: 4 Stars

Andy Bell and Vince Clarke, better known as Erasure, were pretty much dominating the synth pop/new wave music that made the 1980s. Not much was heard from them after that decade, however; in fact, the only headline that was really made was that Andy was HIV-positive. But that still didn't stop the duo from making another good album, 2005's Nightbird. And the goodness continues with this album, Light at the End of the World.

Erasure hasn't really changed their style, so this album may not appeal to many listeners outside of the club scene. But I can still point out some great tracks, like "When a Lover Leaves You", "Golden Heart", and "Fly Away". Songs with a message also impress, like when Andy tackles the topic of his dysfunctional family on "Storm in a Teacup"; and while lost-girl-that-needs-to-be-saved songs usually sound clichéd, "Sunday Girl" actually doesn't sound half-bad.

Another good song is "How My Eyes Adore You", which rides a hip-hop-inspired beat. In fact, the only thing that struck me as odd is that "Darlene" is a love song to a woman, and I don't understand why an openly gay man would be doing that (even though Andy never says "she" or "her", I don't think it's about a man because I don't know of any men named Darlene). But Light at the End of the World still shows that there continues to be bright skies ahead in Erasure's future.

Free Music Review: Work of art
Hit: 4 Stars

I have most of the erasure albums and this one doesn't dissapoint. Sunday Girl and I Could Fall In Love With You are catchy and easily draw you in. Erasure has always been top-notch at crafting love songs, and they don't stray too much from that territory this time either, Sunday Girl being one exception. After having listened to Andy Bell's solo album and being very impressed with it, I was hoping some of the guts from that album would be present on this one, and I can see that there are some. However, after Sucker For Love plays, it seems much of the album takes on a softer tone. I usually play the faster tracks and skip the softer ones till I'm in that mood. They are all well-crafted songs and as a whole the album is a work of art. Sure to please those already familiar or new to erasure. However I'm still hoping for the next album to take no prisoners and get more edgy.

Free Music Review: Erasure In Classic Form
Hit: 4 Stars

I've been a fan of Erasure for nearly twenty years and I give them credit for trying different musical approaches in albums like Loveboat and Union Street, but Light at the End of the World is the approach I like. It doesn't break any new ground. They are simply doing what they do best. Well written electronic pop with solid rhythm and catchy melodies. It's in the mold of what they were doing in the '90s and it's currently in heavy rotation on my CD player. I dock it a star because the overall production quality doesn't sound quite as crisp as some past efforts, but it's not a fatal flaw. I'm just picky about that sort of thing. If you are familiar with them, like their music and haven't heard this, I would highly recommend picking it up. You won't be disappointed.
