Free Music Notes for NightbirdFree Music Review: Got me hooked... Hit: 5 Stars
I had never paid much attention to the music of Erasure. Odd, considering that I love Depeche Mode and Erasure derived from Depeche...
I was surfing through Amazon.com a couple of nights ago and this comment I read about Erasure's most recent album caught my eye:
"This album arrived shortly after singer Andy Bell's revelation that he had been living with HIV for more than six years, suffering from debilitating pain." It amazed me, truly. So I decided to listen to it through Napster... and the album was indeed brilliant! I haven't felt the same way about an album since I first discovered Depeche Mode many, many years ago.
It's actually kind of fun on many levels: highly danceable (think early eights new wave dance beats) and with music that makes you feel good about yourself (Latinamerican readers, think Moenia). The lyrics take on such an incredible meaning when you read them knowing what Bell is going through. Such as this one, from the song "Let's Take One More Rocket to the Moon" (one of my favorite tracks):
"A keychain in your pocket just for luck
I hold it in and close my eyes to hide a tear..."
The album is a masterpiece that I know I will be listening to for years to come. I am glad I discovered it... I hope you enjoy it every bit as much as I am.
Free Music Review: Back to Erasure basics Hit: 5 Stars
This is a very good album, I have not enjoyed Erasure that much since Abba-esque release. I am a long-time fan but was not all that excited about their releases between the two greatest hits compilations (which covers most of their 90s albums - SaySaySay, Erasure, Cowboy, Loveboat, Other People's Songs).
I did enjoy "Erasure" album the most out of that bunch but still got lost in extended versions (which I never understood the purpose of), but SaySaySay, Cowboy and Loveboat did not leave one memorable song in my memory, and Other People Songs (with relatively mediocre selection of classics to cover) made me think they were quitting the business, especially when a second greatest hits album followed...
It's not like they reinvented themselves this time or created a new sound, they just went back to their roots and recorded an album that sounds very complete and asks to be played more. Of course, with 80s sound (synth, electro) being rather hot at the moment, they sound fresh, and it is good that they did not have to adapt to the trend, they just did what they always did best - quality synth pop. Now I want to replay The Innocents, Wild! or Chorus or even Crackers International and revisit this great duo and enjoy the fact they still have it and can produce very good music.
Free Music Review: This will become one of my favorite albums Hit: 5 Stars
80's synth rock has always been my absolute favorite genre of music, but I never really got into Erasure for some reason. In fact I was thrilled when Vince Clark left Depeche Mode and Martin Gore took over as solo songwriter. Depeche Mode could never had produced such dark and moody music had Clark stayed with them. However, for some reason I stumbled onto Erasure's new album, Nightbird, and gave it a listen. The first song I listened to was Here I Go Impossible Again, which instantly caught my attention with its sweet retro sounds and melodies. So I decided to buy the album. I was extremely surprised at how excellent the rest of the music is, it was truly a great and unexpected surprise! Every song on here is good, especially Breathe, I Bet You're Mad at Me, I Broke It All In Two and Let's Take One More Rocket To The Moon. Although I am not familiar with all of Erasure's older material, this has a melancholy feel about it, unlike most of the other Erasure I haver heard. It's slower and more mature sounding, but not depressing at all. I have only owned this album a few days, but I can't stop listening to it, and I know it will become one of my favorites. Even if you're not a huge fan of Erasure's older songs, give this album a try, it's excellent!
Free Music Review: This bird soars! Hit: 5 Stars
Brilliant! Sometimes it is unfathomable what a magnificently, beautiful instrument Andy Bell's voice is. I have been an Erasure fan from the beginning and, unlike a few of the reviewers, I have been able to follow them everywhere they wanted to take their music. I loved the dark, ambient "Erasure" and grooved to the bare bones approach of "Loveboat." My favorite album to this point has always been "I Say I Say I Say" but with the release of "Nightbird" I find myself in a quandry. It's just that good -- we're talking masterpiece here! If you are an Erasure fan it will be love from the moment the first note of the opening cut "No Doubt." Vince and Andy always make music that grabs you and makes you FEEL. There are very few other artists that have been able to do this to me. I put on an Erasure CD when I want to be transported to another place and time. The mood here is not as sunny and bright as "I Say I Say I Say" but somehow it's not a downer at all. You will find the songs working their way into your soul and you'll be in that place where only Erasure fans go -- 80's synth nirvana! I don't consider this a return to form because they never lost it. They are simply doing what they do best and they soar!
Free Music Review: Erasure's Best in Years!! Hit: 5 Stars
This is without doubt Erasure's best CD in a very long time. I would say the songs on this album as a whole are the best since the days of Wild! or The Innocents.
Right from the beginning you can sense that this is a very introspective and thoughtful album - full of songs that seem more reflective than usual for your typical Erasure album. It's quite apparent that Andy Bell's battle with HIV plays into some of the songs.
Simply speaking, the songs on this album are far better than those on Loveboat and Cowboy (and even I Say I Say I Say). Stuff like "Here I Go Impossible Again" and "Breathe" are extremely catch and brings back memories of Erasure at their peak in the late 80's/early 90's. The songs sound very similar to their older stuff like "Always", but that isn't a bad thing!
As a new wave fan, I am glad that Erasure is back on a strong note. It's painful to see Andy go through so much with his struggles with HIV, but I am glad that at least he's able to handle it with grace and give the fans a very good, reflective album to share.
