Free Music Notes for My Secret Life

Free Music Review: Absolutely Perfect.
Hit: 5 Stars

Eric Burdon has never left his music nor his friends and fans. There's no reason to leave the 60's behind, Eric has brought them back to us-in a more mature, yet powerful, work. Absolutely perfect.

Free Music Review: The Best Burdon disc of the past 20 years
Hit: 5 Stars

Much as others have said... interesting variety, solid production. I think his voice is much stronger here than on other releases of the past two decades.

Free Music Review: Worth taking the time to listen to
Hit: 4 Stars

"Once Upon a Time" reflects on how life was simpler when Eric was a younger man. It has a nice bluesy feel to it. Burdon's weathered vocals help the listener contrast between the two time periods. Subtle drum beats and serene mandolin work blends well with Eric's fevered vocal delivery on "Motorcycle Girl". It's a tale of heartbreak and regret. "Over the Border" is the heaviest rocker, with its chunky muted riffs and piercing organ tones, as it tells the story of drug runners on the lamb. The female back-up singers help drive the catchy chorus home.

Twangy guitars and bluesy harmonica dominate the mid-tempo track "Highway 62". "Jazzman" has Eric switching up his style a bit. Perhaps it's a nod to the olden days when Sinatra was the man. It's heavy on the brass and piano and has a great swing to it. "Devil's Slide" is ironically loaded with plenty of slide guitar work. It has a spoken-word intro that gives way to a soulful execution. The blues boogie riff on "Can't Kill the Boogieman" sure does sound familiar.

The Bad
Nothing notable

The Verdict
You don't have to be an undercover agent to explore this `secret life'. Burdon lays it all out on the table for you with his tales of life on the open road, love, danger, and loss. Eric's `secret life' is worth taking the time to listen to.

Free Music Review: Eric Burdon is still an Animal
Hit: 4 Stars

The way Eric Burdon sings from his throat it's amazing his voice is still intact. He is as better than ever. Not his best album but anything by him is better than 90% of the stuff out there.

Free Music Review: Not bad, but 5 stars? Nope
Hit: 3 Stars

This CD represents a step in the right direction for Eric Burdon, who in recent years has seen his style devolve from that of an inspired blues shouter into a self-conscious soul-crooner who drastically overinterprets his material. So, yes, some of the punch is back in Eric Burdon, but I can't go along with the 5-star reviews of the other reviewers. Not even close.

A few tunes - "Over the Border" and "Can't Kill the Boogieman" - evoke the Eric Burdon of yore, but lack the drama and immediacy of Eric's work with the early Animals. The musicianship is good, the production is good, but the material just doesn't inspire me. Unlike some Eric Burdon/Animals material that's been released over the years, this is not rubbish, but neither is it truly memorable. After a couple of plays, I lost interest.
