Free Music Notes for Sun Secrets / Stop (2 Albums on One)Free Music Review: Things I Missed Hit: 5 Stars
Eric Burdon had alot of good music and the bands he played with were at there peak when he sang with them. This was one of those pieces of his entire collection that his play on words as his poetry should have stood out more than it did. This was a good purchase as the walk down memory lane is listening great Blues. Thanks Celtic
Free Music Review: Stop is an overlooked gem Hit: 4 Stars
Quite a few comments here re: Sun Secrets being the stronger album and it certainly delivers but it still has one foot firmly entrenched in Burdon's Animal past. Nothing wrong with that but it's hard to beat the originals for Animal classics.
IMO, Stop is a simply great album. I remember buying this on vinyl way back when and was knocked over by the tight arrangements and smoking riffs. City Boy is an all out rocker with a terrific bridge and pounding beat. The title song Stop really cooks with a guitar solo that's both funky and rocking and is a testament to a great band with a great front man that were moving in new directions. Too bad there wasn't room on this double album for the smoldering 8 minute Be Mine. I would have preferred it to the dated `Letter from the Country Farm'.
Yes, it's too bad if Burdon didn't get paid for this but I've got to think this was work he is proud of.
Free Music Review: Burdon ROCKS! Hit: 4 Stars
It is true that in Eric's autobiography he states that "Sun Secrets" was released without his permission."Stop" he doesn't even mention. Nevertheless these 2 albums are excellent! "Stop" was recorded in 1971 and has a loose, jazzier approach. "Sun Secrets" recorded in 1974 is a great rock album featuring 3 Animal numbers.Guitarist Aalon Butler is superb. I understand Burdon's objection to these albums e.g. no money etc. but also his 1973 album "Mirage" hasn't been "officialy" released but it's a classic. We are the ones who profit from these releases.
Free Music Review: two for one Hit: 3 Stars
Of the two albums, I like Sun Secrets the best. Eric with a great power trio. He basically let the guys in the band do the arrainging of the old Animal tunes. There's not a bad song in the whole group. One power chord after another. This group also was to record the ill-fated Mirage album. After making million record sellers out of WAR, Gold and Goldstein pulled the plug on a very original concept album. Stop seems a little more disjointed album, put out without Eric's knowledge, just to fulfill a record contract. The best song on the album, " Be Mine" isn't included on the CD. But hey, two of Eric's albums for the price of one is worth it.
Free Music Review: Incomplete album.....missing track Hit: 3 Stars
I bought this CD comp for one track on the Stop album that I hadn't heard since my vinyl copy wore out long ago. The track is "Be mine". It's not on this CD. I didn't check the track listing when I bought the CD because it never occurred to me that they would simply omit this track....big disappointment.....the rest of the tracks are good because they're Eric Burdon recordings, but the omission of this critical 8 minute song is really cheesy...
