Free Music Notes for The Road to EscondidoFree Music Review: What a disappointment Hit: 2 StarsI've been a great fan of J.J. for some 25 years and possess some 15 of his albums. Also I am a great appreciator of Clapton as a guitarist but not necessarily his albums. The best way to sum this one up is to say that Clapton brings J.J. down to a level of blandness I never expected. After J.J.'s recent Albums, "J.J.Cale Live" and "To Tulsa and Back" (Both 5 Star Albums), this was a real disappointment.
Free Music Review: Escondido Hit: 5 StarsJJ Cales best work in 20 yrs. Eric is Eric - the greatest
Free Music Review: Nice collaboration--I'd pick another producer the next time Hit: 4 StarsI think the production perhaps makes the road a bit smoother than it should be. For the most part, this CD is JJ Cale--a strong bluesy, rootsy kind of groove that's very listenable. The problem is I think the too smooth production style wore the gravel off the road--and that gravel is what makes JJ Cale so good.
From the first, "Danger" sets the scene. The song's dark and deep with an unmistakable bayou air. Some of my favorites are "Sporting Life Blues", "Heads in Georgia" and "Missing Persons."
It's great to hear both Clapton and Cale singing on "Sporting Life." This is definitely a song that could use just a little more 'edge' though.
If you came for Clapton, you may be disappointed. For the most part, this CD is Cale's music--which was a strong influence on Clapton in the 70's.
Free Music Review: JJ Cale at his best Hit: 5 StarsClapton has covered JJ Cale songs for a long time. Its good to listen to both of these Great Artists working together. You can really get a good feel for how "real" music is made.
Free Music Review: Nothing Special; Disappointing Hit: 3 StarsThis CD suffers from a tiredness which seeps through the music. On the positive side, Clapton gets in a few interesting guitar licks here and there, and one or two songs might get your toes tapping. In general, however, the selection of songs lean toward the easy and familiar, and the commercial. The selections are a slapdash mix of musical styles which don't really complement each other. The recording quality is mediocre. One of the songs is named, "Hard to Thrill". It is about a man who has seen it all and is bored by life. That's how this album sounds....a general listlessness and boredom with life permeates throughout, and there is nothing new or exciting here. Disappointing.
