Free Music Notes for Me & Mr Johnson

Free Music Review: Musician and Historian
Hit: 5 Stars

First off, whether you know who Johnson is or not, if the blues hit you so hard you get chills when you hear them or you're just a casual listener, you will consider this album AMAZING. Clapton leads two lives, one as a pop musician and one as a blues historian. He was trained by the music of the masters and creators, and through The Yardbirds, Bluesbreakers, and From the Cradle he's developed into the most disciplined blues musician alive today. This album's not flashy or gimmicky, he retains the original feel of Johnson's playing, and like any good historian, describes it in a way that modern audiences, (with or without the previous background) will understand and appreciate. For those that are familiar with Johnson, you will find Clapton's interpretations technically superior, very respectful, absent of Slowhand's (most qualified) silent ego. Johnson was a master and Clapton humbly and artistically shares this with the world.

Free Music Review: The One-Star folks are missing the point...
Hit: 5 Stars

I read all the reviews for this CD and am amused at the reviews given by our 1-* reviewers. The same individuals who are blasting EC for straying away from "the original" would have blasted him for not sounding like "the original" had he chosen to do a "solo" album that many of the 1-*'s have suggested.

I loved this album and recommend it without hesitation to anyone interested in finding out the endless possibilities that EC possesses. Some have said that this album is trash because they don't hear the "fire" in EC's guitar playing on the album. The songs on this album did not require "blazing guitar solos". EC hasn't lost his touch on the guitar. Folks who doubt this should check the Concert for George and the 70th Birthday Bash for John Mayall.

EC took RJ's music and put his own stamp on it. And guess what? The music sounds wonderful.

Free Music Review: Absolutely FANTASTIC!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

Being a big fan of Robert Johnson, I was thrilled to hear that virtuoso guitarist (and legend in his own right) Eric Clapton decided to do a cover album of 14 Robert Johnson songs. My thought was: 'Well, I'm either going to love this or I'm going to hate it...' Fortunately for me it was the former! Clapton has Johnson down to a T --- from his falsetto voice, wailing moans and of course his superb guitar licks. In my opinion, the songs 'Come On In My Kitchen', 'They're Red Hot', 'Hell Hound On My Trail', '32-20' & 'When You've Got A Good Friend' are the best. But the truth is, fans of the blues & Johnson won't be disappointed by any of them. If ever a true musical genius like Robert Johnson 'The King of the Delta Blues Singers' needed a contemporary re-rendering with a little more umph and pizazz --- Eric Clapton shows why he was the ideal choice to do it!

Free Music Review: You want it? You got it!
Hit: 5 Stars

Eric has made another classic album. I don't know what some want when they say his singing has no soul or that everything is just too slick in production. I mean did we expect Eric to pull out a 4 track recorder, sit in his bedroom, and try to copy everything Johnson did?

This is a great album of one of the best artists of all-time covering his musical idol. Eric made the songs more up to date, maybe a little more accessible, and he did what was not only true to himself, but what is true to Johnson's music.

All songs are excellent, but the absolute best are: They're Red Hot, Stop Breakin' Down Blues, Travelin' Riverside Blues, Hell Hound On My Trail, Milkcow's Calf Blues, and Last Fair Deal Gone Down. Eric's singing is excellent. His voice brings out the emotions just fine, and well what can I say? I love his voice.

Free Music Review: a masterful take on the Johnson oeuvre

Everything you'd expect, and less, from Clapton. Less, in this case, being a high compliment. You will read many things about the musicianship and respect for the originals from other reviewers, so I won't go there. But I must thank Eric Clapton for not including the Johnson tunes he has done so well in past recordings (Walkin' Blues, Crossroad Blues, Malted Milk Blues) in favor of little-recorded gems (They're Red Hot, Me and the Devil Blues, When You've Got A Good Friend). Clapton is not retreading old ground here; he's expanding the view into the magnificent and scary musical vision of Robert Johnson. Clapton's homage is not reverence, it's loving admiration. If you loved From The Cradle, this is a definite for you.

Now, if he will do the right thing and donate the money somewhere that continues to honor Johnson's legacy...
