Free Music Review: Better than I dared to dream
Hit: 5 Stars

I set myself up for a huge disappointment when I heard about this CD. I waited and waited for its release, the anticipation building day by day. When I finally got it, I was almost afraid to play it because how could anything stand up to that sort of hype? Well, it is even better than I imagined. No, Eric did not "clone" the Johnson recordings - what would be the point of that? Those recordings already exist. He put his own indelible touch on those remarkable songs. Other reviewers have derided Eric's "technical" playing - as a low side of mediocre guitarist, it is the delicacy and technical brilliance of his playing that fascinates me. I love this CD. Bravo, Mr. Clapton.

Free Music Review: Lighten Up
Hit: 5 Stars

Hey folks, the blues can be fun too! Rather than try to pretend to be something he's not, Eric brings a lighter touch to otherwise heavy blues tunes. He pays tribute to Mr J in a style that's clean and modern...blues doesn't have to be down and dirty...especially with some of the fun lyrics that Robert Johnson penned. To complain that this recording sounds too clean for the blues makes is sound like only scratchy 78s can reproduce the 'real' blues...phooey. Sure, it's not the down-home angry sound of Big Joe Williams, but Eric and his boys are having fun and that's good enough for me. So play this album a couple of times and you may find that it grows on you the way it has on me.

Free Music Review: Best Clapton Album in Years!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

This is Clapton's electric interpretation of Robert Johnson. Eric plays guitar and sings with the same passion that made Layla and I Shot the Sheriff the modern blues/rock standards that reshaped the 70s. Listening to this CD tonight, I had visions of Elmore James strapping a DeArmond pickup on an acoustic guitar for the first time and playing new, electrified blues. Clapton takes Robert Johnson to a higher level, incorporating what seems like everything he learned from the Bluesbreakers and Cream days into a compact, mellower, yet growling modern blues classic. This CD is sure to be a classic that will no doubt ignite a new fire in the modern rock world.

This is a real good blues CD. I've bought a lot of his earlier work and this by far is one of my favorites. I just recently "discovered" EC and was born in '87 so I haven't heard all of his early work, but of what I've heard, this CD is on top. This is the type of CD where you don't have to skip any of the tracks, they're all good! It's also real cool how he lets the other musicians do more solos than he does on some songs, that shows a lot about him and his view on music, he doesn't always have to be the center of attention. Anyways don't take my word for it, i never really liked critics, I'm just doing this because I'm bored.

Free Music Review: Essential
Hit: 5 Stars

Reading others' comments I realize how little most writers (reviewers) understand either Clapton or Robert Johnson. This album achieves something rare - humble, modest music. Compare it to whatever you want to, it is authentic, heart felt and genuine. Clapton isn't playing flashy guitar here: he is playing his most soulful in many years. This is about Robert Johnson and not about record charts or radio stations. Clapton had only one goal here and that was to be true to the music. You get it or you don't Get it, listen, and it will come to you. Few, if any, releases this year will match this for its integrity, sincerity and sheer truth.
