Free Music Notes for Me & Mr JohnsonFree Music Review: Roots blues. Don't expect Cream. Hit: 5 Stars
I'm glad I did not listen to some the negative reviews. If you're looking at this you probably appreciate Eric Clapton's genius. This album is a faithful tribute to the roots blues that has inspired Clapton throughout his career (and numerous others). If you're looking for Cream: put on Disreli Gears, don't buy this album. If you're looking for adult contemporary, this is not the album for you. This is the music of an authentic American genius as delivered a faithful student, and a master in his own right. I'm enjoying a great deal.
Free Music Review: Its actually good Hit: 5 Stars
A prime example of when you should not judge a book by its cover (not a pun).If all of you out there decide to venture farther with this CD than looking at its cover, you will find one of the best cover albums ever. You knew the songs had to be good- its Eric Clapton playing Robert Johnson- and they are. There's no two ways about it- when you take possibly the single best living guitarist and let him tribute to his biggest influence for an entire CD, you are going to get a good album. Really, like, wasn't that obvious?
Free Music Review: Back to the Delta Blues Hit: 5 Stars
Only Eric Clapton would feel comfortable enough to return to his inspiration and explore his "blues roots." Don't listen to any negative reviews. Those fans just want to hear their "guitar god " scatter notes like confetti at a wedding. Yet Clapton is so much more. He perhaps the most versitile artist of our day. Though I loved "From the Cradle," this is an entirely different body of work. Eric Clapton is happiest when playing the blues. Is it any wonder that he would return to the Delta and do just that.
Free Music Review: Am I alone here? Hit: 5 Stars
Contrary to most of the Eric fans and blues purists, I really, really enjoyed this album. I hadn't planned on buying it; I wasn't all that knocked out by Eric's previous stabs at pure blues albums, good as they were, but hearing this at a friends' house a few weeks ago I was knocked out by it. Somehow it all comes together here. Eric really nails the sound, the feel, the essential emotion of Johnson's songs without falling into the trap of trying to imitate Johnson. Strongly recommended.
Free Music Review: Clapton returns to roots Hit: 5 Stars
Stunning! I find I get some of the same feeling that Clapton describes in the liner notes the "music is my oldest friend, stuck in the back of my head". He doesn't try to BE Robert Johnson but just remains faithful to the purity of the work. If a complaint be found its in his obvious reverence of the body of work. I can see the smoky roadhouse and smell the beer and ribs. If you like the blues and Clapton at guitar you've got to give it a listen. My feet are tapping now!
