Free Music Notes for The Cream of ClaptonFree Music Review: Cream of Clapton Rises To The Top Hit: 5 StarsGreat collection of Eric's work with Cream, Blind Faith, Derek and the Dominos, and of course his solo efforts. If you're a fan of E.C., this CD gives you a taste of his best work and leaves you wanting to go through the archives and hear more. I liked it so much, I purchased tickets to his concert coming to my town on the fall 2006 leg of his tour. Great addition to anyone's music collection.
Free Music Review: Good: hey, it's CLAPTON! Hit: 4 StarsA good best-of compilation from most likely the greatest guitar player ever to grace this earth. It could have been better. I don't know if this was released before or after 'From the Cradle', but if it was after, I would have liked to have some 'From the Cradle' songs on here. Another thing is the omission of live versions, except, of course, the quintessential Cream classic, Crossroads, a smokin' redo of a Robert Johnson song. I for one may include the 'Layla' from 'Live in the Seventies' or 'One more car, one more Rider'. But I think this was intended more for the casual fan, so studio recordings of things actually make more sense in the context. A good CD, a good addition to any CD collection. Put this in a so and so number CD changer with John Lee Hooker (Don't look back is AWESOME!) and you have an Uber mix. If you want a good representation of a true genius, and some awesome guitar-on-fire Clapton, recommended.
Free Music Review: Nice Work Hit: 4 StarsEric Clapton had reached the height to be one of the greatest guitarist and solo artists in the world. Cream of Clapton is a great of overview of this amazing musician. Nineteen of Clapton's biggest hits are loaded onto this CD. It is best Clapton greatest hits CD around. It captures his career starting back in the 1960's. For a beginner of an average fan this is the best collection to get. But if your willing to cough up forty more dollars the Crossroads box set is the way to go. Cream of Clapton contains "Sunshine of Your Love" "White Room" and a couple other of songs from back in his Cream days. It has some of his Blind Faith music, but is best music came with Derek and the Dominoes in the early 70's. "Layla" and "Bell Bottom Blues" are from the amazing album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. After that the CD branches off into Clapton's solo music "Cocaine" and "I Can't Stand It". But for the value this album is the way to go. The only problem is that it doesn't have "She's Waiting". This album is still the choice.
Free Music Review: An Excellent Clapton Compilation Hit: 5 StarsOften called the world's greatest guitar player, Eric Clapton is certainly in the upper echelon of the rock elite. His career has spanned five decades, as both a member of three successful bands and later a brilliant solo career.
"The Cream Of Clapton" contains 19 tracks from all stages of Eric's career, from his days in Cream ("Sunshine O Your Love", "White Room", "Crossroads", "Badge"), Blind Faith ("Presence Of The Lord"), Derek And The Dominoes ("Bell Bottom Blues" and of course "Layla") and his solo career ("I Shot The Sheriff", his great cover of "Knockin' On Heaven's Door", "Cocaine", "Wonderful Tonight", "Promises, "I Can't Stand It"). All the songs sound great, even though they could still use a tad bit more tweaking.
My only major qualm with this collection is that there are a few good songs missing. "Lay Down Sally", for example, got all the way up to number three on the Billboard Hot 100, yet it did not make it onto this collection. Also, while it was most likely not included for personal reasons (though it made it onto the later, inferior collection "Clapton Chronicles"), "Tears In Heaven" was also a huge hit. "Forever Man" was one of Clapton's few quality recordings in the 1980s', and it also warrants a place on this collection. And last but not least, Clapton did have two pretty big hits after this collection was released: "Change The World" (which made it to number five on the Hot 100 and stayed there for nearly a year) and "My Father's Eyes". Granted, I know they came afterwards, but I'd like to see them appear on a collection someday.
Hopefully, Clapton will get a two cd collection of all his best work someday, but until now, "The Crwam Of Clapton" offers exactly, what it promises, even if it's only a sampler.
