Free Music Notes for Ah Via MusicomFree Music Review: NOT ALWAYS THIS GOOD Hit: 5 StarsHaving seen ERIC live and being very dissapointed, I agonized over buying this CD. Sorry I waited this long. I think that TONE is average at best, but this is a great CD. Now I understand the fuss about ERIC JOHNSON. His tone is almost violin like on some tracks and the instrumental compositions are 1st class. His playing is brilliant and stays away from cliche's. That often means eccentric and hard to listen too tones and stylings. Not on this, it is different but always a joy to listen too. Inspirational if you play the guitar yourself. Besides your jaw hitting your chest any number of times, this is very accessible guitar virtuosity. I felt that on TONE he was clever for cleverness sake. This is free of ego boosting trickery and concentrates on composition and content. His singing still leaves me cold, but is far less intrusive than on TONE.
Free Music Review: One of the best virtuoso guitar albums of the century! Hit: 5 StarsI first heard of Eric Johnson through my dad. First album I heard by Eric was "Tones" released in 1986 on Warner Bros./Reprise Records. Anyway, I enjoyed "Tones," but I will have to say that "Ah Via Musicom" blows it out of the water in terms of production, sound quality, and just overall performance. The songs are better. Chockful of brilliant, shimmering melodies and his textbook violin-like string-skipping runs. Do these qualities make for a better album? No. Has Eric's songwriting matured? Yes. What really amazes me about this album is the overall lead/soloing tone of Eric's. I mean I thought that he had a fantastic tone on "Tones," but man on "Ah..." it is just down-right WRONG!!! I don't mean to sound envious of his tone, but I just can't help it. Having a good guitar tone is just ONE of the things that attracts me to this album. I think what it boils down to are the songs and how he combines virtuosic guitar playing with flawless execution. Although I mentioned in a prior review of "Venus Isle" that this album isn't as good as "Venus Isle," but I am willing to admit that this album was the ice breaker in terms of turning me into a full fanatic. Overall, I think "Ah Via Musicom" displays a well assortment of different musical styles and too it gives us a taste of the genius that is Eric Johnson
Free Music Review: Always brings back memmories Hit: 5 StarsI bought this disc after hearing Cliffs of Dover on the radio. While I do like that song It's not the best one here. The range AND feeling are all over this thing! High points are Desert Rose,Trademark,Nothing Can Keep Me From You,Forty Mile Town and East Wes, though they are all very good. Listen to this album, get on your motorcycle and head up Highway 1 to Monterey like I did and you will have a surreal experince!
Free Music Review: A must own for guitar fans Hit: 5 StarsEvery guitar fan "must" own this album. Along with Electric Ladyland, Goodbye Cream, Derick and the Dominoes Layla recordings, Led Zep II and maybe Allman's Live at the Fillmore, this is one of the all time great guitar albums from probably the world's greatest living guitarist.
Free Music Review: A MASTER guitarist with feeling and he can sing too!! Hit: 5 StarsEric Johnson is hard to capture in one word. Sure there are many masters of the guitar out there - But I don't think there are any that have the "feeling" in their music like Eric does. Anyone can jam on the strings, but most of that amounts to nothing more than a guitar solo in an big hair song. With Eric's music, much more can be felt and he can sing too!!!! This CD has something that will grab you from the start and you will be hooked. Don't believe me? YOUR LOSS. Trust me, you'll be glad you got this one...
