Free Music Notes for BloomFree Music Review: New Directions for Eric (for the patient) Hit: 4 Stars
The first few times I listened to this recording, I ran out of time before I got past track 3 or 4. Reflecting only upon those songs, I was a little dissappointed in this disc. It sounded like more of the same - mile after mile of 32nd note flourishes from Johnson, with a fairly sterile-sounding backup. It's great stuff, but we all have hours of this kind of his playing in our libraries now.
But, once I had a chance to get all the way through it, my opinion of this disc improved a lot. It really gets started around "Sad Legacy" and moves from there. The B-side of the disc contains several really cool explorations, sounding nothing at all like Johnson has recorded in the past. Culminating in the funky, boppy "Magnetized", Eric Johnson shows some real reach on this one. I'm glad he's still around.
Free Music Review: hard to review Hit: 4 Stars
I can see why some are disappointed with 'Bloom' since a few songs aren't so fresh. Still, this CD is amazing if you make a copy of a "Best of Bloom" (Of the first six fast songs, I usually only listen to Bloom and the cooler than cool Good to Me.)
For me, this would be:
1. Bloom
4. Good to Me
7. Sea Secret
8. Sad Legacy
10. Cruise the Nile
12. Your Sweet Eyes
9. From My Heart
Not to knock the other songs, but this is the 27 minute CD I like. Perfect in the summer. I feel sorry for people who don't hear Bloom.
Free Music Review: Something for everyone Hit: 4 Stars
I've been a fan of Eric Johnson since "Tones" was released. Unlike others who may prefer tracks 1 to 6 (the rocker guitar instrumentals (with the exception of "My Back Pages" with vocals), my favourite tracks are 7 to 16. It seems that with the first 6 tracks I've heard better from him before (especially when I saw him live in concert in 2004), and the production should be rawer on some of those tracks. I give 4 1/2 stars for tracks 7 to 16, and 3 stars for tracks 1 to 6.
Free Music Review: BEING NICE WITH 4 STARS Hit: 4 Stars
I always see people going on and on about how good
or bad a C/D is. WHY! Just tell it like it is. Take this
one for example. The truth is the first 6 maybe 7 songs
really rock, and lets face it, isn't that what its all
about. I care nothing for those SLOW DRAWN OUT SONGS!
So be warned, after #6 its snoozefest.
Free Music Review: Pretty good; all over the 4 Stars
Glad I bought it but it doesn't equal his usual non-bluesy stuff. Alot of jazzier numbers, some piano, little that you can learn to sing. Well recorded, but I can't listen to it very long before I need a break. This may be his jazziest release.
