Free Music Notes for BloomFree Music Review: Mediocre at Best Hit: 3 Stars
We've heard it all before--and that's not a bad thing; considering Eric Johnson's brilliance. Unfortunately, the songs here do little to enhance his catalog. I'm not sure what it is exactly, but the overall impression is "uninspired," perhaps? I'm usually tempted to play EJ's songs on my guitar (yeah, right!) but I don't really feel the urge this time. Oh well, few artists can touch the emotional/technical heights that EJ has. If one had never heard his earlier stuff, I suspect one might have a more favorable opinion of Bloom. I keep hearing recycled riffs and structures which are only dim echoes of his groundbreaking excellence. Even the best run out of stellar ideas eventually.
Free Music Review: Forget about the 9 volt battery and worry about the tone. Hit: 3 Stars
Eric Johnson who is famous for being able to tell if one of the batteries in his effects chain is losing power should start to worry about making his guitar sound like a guitar instead of a violin. Only one or two tracks really stand out which is really dissapointing since it has been awhile since his last studio CD and he can definitely play. I had the CD playing in the stereo while doing some work on my computer when a friend came over and wanted to know when I started getting in to new age muzak (last song on the CD). However to me the CD is still worth the purchase price.
Free Music Review: Kinda ho hum for me... Hit: 3 Stars
I was really wanting more out of this great guitar player, this is one of those filler CD's..maybe his next one will be the one.
I loved the last live CD, but this one just don't do it for me. He reminds me of Robben ford, ya just keep waiting for that just killer CD, but it don't come. Don't get me wrong there are a few very cool songs on it, but over all it just don't add up..Tones is still his best CD, and thats sad for it was his first...save your money or buy his electromagnets CD..
Free Music Review: Running on empty Hit: 3 Stars
Eric's playing and song writing have inspired me for years. I've been through the album 6 times in 3 days. But, I keep coming to the same conclusion: this recording is uninspired.
There IS quite a variety of styles, from classic twang to 80's adult contemporary stylings. But, in general, the recording is so overly compressed and drowning in reverb that it's not clear why they bothered to release it in stereo.
Free Music Review: muddy bunch of mess Hit: 2 Stars
I could not disagree more with the few glowing reviews of this CD. I am a big fan of Eric, and love "Ah Via...." and "Venus Isle". His live work with other artists show his virtuosity and his classical piano training. This CD has horrible production, it is "muddy" and flat with no dynamics, which is the EJ way, but these cuts cannot be differentiated from another. His singing is worse than ever, and that says a lot. Cannot believe such a great musician either cannot progress as a singer. Just stop singing altogether! Heck, hire a singer if you want to write lyrics. The Dylan song on this CD, is excrutiating. His playing is what we want, his chords are gorgeous and full.We want his sliding fret work. This has the prettiest cover art of any CD I have seen in awhile, but should have spent the money on the post production. just one long droning sound. I have good rig and this CD sounds like something from the 70's.Joe Satriani finally realized on his last and best CD since "Surfing with The Alien" that his singing was killing his work and reputation and STOPPED.I don't know who produced "Bloom", but they should should be shot with a big KABOOM!
