Free Music Notes for Bloom

Free Music Review: Impossible to pair
Hit: 5 Stars

I have learned to wait for Eric's magic. And also learned to appreciate his deliveries. This one didn't disappointed me at all. "Bloom" is an elevated benchmark that has to be heard from start to finish in order to digest its essence. It is carefully crafted and perfectly edited to make you admire the talent behind this virtuoso that is so polyfaceted that it would be hard to tell his magnificency from one song to another if you didn't know him well enough. I remember I knew about Johnson from the original G3 album. Good thing that happened, because I gathered his every album and enjoyed every single one of them. If I haven't said this already, please read carefully: "Bloom" is very pleasant and highly recommended.

Free Music Review: The Best of Everything
Hit: 5 Stars

Eric Johnson is in his usual superb form on this album, showing that he can slip effortlessly from one style to another without breaking a sweat.

The first section, Prelude, includes some of his blazingly fast and melodic guitar virtuosity, including a unique rendition of Bob Dylan's "My Pack Pages".

The second section, Courante (which refers to 16th century courting dances), includes some sweet ballads, a country-ish tribute to Jerry Reed, and some tasteful new-agey fare.

The last section, Allemande (again referring to dances), includes some new-agey tunes as well as some soft fusion pieces.

All in all, this one's a keeper.

Free Music Review: IT'S ABOUT TIME!
Hit: 5 Stars

I have been waiting and waiting for Mr. Johnson to finally come out with a brand new album and the wait has been worth it. The music on Bloom is consistent with the style of Ah Via Musicom. The prelude opens up as the hard thumper type rock that Johnson adds his trademark guitaring. The second part of the cd known as the Courante is the atmospheric Celtic-like grooves that are reminiscent of Venus Isle (in my opinion, Johnson's best album.) And the third and final part called Allemande ends the album in a jazzy manner. This album is right up there with AVM but still doesn't match Venus. However, Bloom definitely will not be leaving my cd player for a very long time!

Free Music Review: Oh, wow.
Hit: 5 Stars

I normally wouldn't add a review after 42 others have already been published, but I want to help Mr. Johnson's batting average with my five stars. This album is incredible.

Mr. Johnson is a pop artist at heart, and a guitarist's guitarist. So he doesn't receive the notoriety of any number of hotshot shredders. Like Todd Rundgren, he creates masterpieces in relative obscurity while the cogniscenti favor rougher, hipper fare.

This album is indeed a bloom, of genius, of a musician who lives inside his music, and whose capacity for romantic beauty has made him an American original. Plus, this guy has chops to die for.

Free Music Review: One of Eric's Best
Hit: 5 Stars

Being a huge fan of Eric Johnson, and having thoroughly enjoyed his albums i.e. Ah Via Musicom, Tones, and Venus Isle, I rate Bloom as one of his two best (Musicom being the other). The brilliance of this album, in my opinion, lies in its heavier tracks. This is by far the most powerful sounding album he's ever done. Tracks like "12 to 12 Vibe", "Summer Jam", "My Back Pages", and "Columbia" drive extremely hard while still showcasing Eric's legendary tone and touch. I was lucky enough to see him perform during the "Primal Twang" shows in San Diego. The Man is getting better every year, I highly recommend this album!
