Free Music Notes for Erich Wolfgang Korngold's Music From The Adventures Of Robin Hood (1988 Re-recording of 1938 Score)

Free Music Review: The greatest Robin Hood ever!
Hit: 5 Stars

Still, after almost 25 years, this is the finest recording of Erich Wolfgang Korngold's Robin Hood (1938). Produced by George Korngold (the composer's son and legendary film music recording producer) and supebly performed by the Utah Symphony Orchestra under Varujan Kojian, this is a must-have recording.
The CD (itself a reissue of the original 1983 LP) contains about 2/3 of the complete original score, but this does not diminish the importance of this recording in any way. On the contrary, this recording demonstrates that a wonderful film music album does not have to contain every note of the score.
All essential score material is included and some tracks are in fact the composer's own radio/concert hall arrangements of the original film cues.
Just listen to The Archery Tournament and The Coronation Procession tracks and be stunned!

Free Music Review: Classic Movie! One of the best ever!
Hit: 5 Stars

As a little child my favorite movie was The Adventures of Robin Hood. While I still love the movie (still waiting rather impatiently for the DVD), the original score to the movie is now among my favorites. Robin Hood is one of if not the best movie score written by Korgold. The sense of adventure, danger, excitement and romance are captured perfectly in the different cords of his music. Whether its Robin's Merry Men sliding down vines and attacking Guy of Gisbourne in Sherwood, the climactic sword fight in the castle or the classic ending as Marion and Robin duck out of the castle, Korngold perfectly captures the emotions of the movie. The Adventures of Robin Hood is the kind of movie that helped make Hollywood what it is today.

Free Music Review: A lively listen
Hit: 4 Stars

Let's face it. Unless your hankering after the Douglas Fairbanks version in black and white the Errol Flynn version of Robin Hood is the best ever. Period. Sure the Costner version had some nice cinematography and a lovely score but this is where it's at. And this production, by The Utah Symphony Orchestra, seems to capture its' essence. I can't claim to be an aficionado of this score nor can I claim to have ever heard any other version in CD format. But what I can say, from a laymen's perspective, is that this production seems to get the feeling right, that X factor that just makes things work. And as you listen to this lively soundtrack disc take the time to read the liner notes. Written by George Korngold, the composers son, they are a nifty little addition to the experience and there are a couple of black and white photos that may help transport you to the movie. Or you may decide to give up and just throw the movie on. Not my favourite soundtrack album of all time and the composers self confessed problem with writing for action movies does creep in a touch, but all told this is will make a good addition to your soundtrack collection and transport you to a time when Hollywood made movies with real men doing real man stuff.... while wearing tights....

Free Music Review: Good, but could have been more complete
Hit: 4 Stars

As far as I know, George Korngold produced two CDs with Varujan Kojian and the Utah Symphony Orchestra. This CD was the first one, and the other one was the very good suite "The Sea Hawk". In this particular case I think that the recording does not include the most famous cue of the original score, the "March of the Merry Men", which had already been recorded by George Korngold, Erich Wolfgang's son, with Charles Gerhardt. If this suite had included it, it had been much better. Nonetheless, since the music of said cue is really a "Leitmotiv", it appears constantly in this recording. My other complaint is the sound quality. Even though this one is also a digital recording, its level is very low. Sometimes old sereo records sound better than digital recordings, and this one is a case. But, nonetheless, please notice that I am an amateur in musical matters.
As a companion to this recording I recomend the two CDs of Charles Gerhardt and the National Philharmonic Orchestra (if I am not wrong named "The Sea Hawk" and "Captain Blood"), where long excerpts of this music are to be found, and the original soundtrack released by TSUNAMI.

Free Music Review: The Latest But Not Necessarily The Greatest
Hit: 4 Stars

This modern recording (which has been around for some time now) lacks the enthusiasm and exuberance of the original which is available on Tsunami TSU 0139 ("E.W. Korngold: The Adventures of Robin Hood"). The orchestra sounds under rehearsed and fails to capture the excitement and richness of the composer's/conductor's vision and intent. Rush (or maybe hack) job? Bottom line: Buy both CDs and decide for yourself. However, TSU 0139 provides you the best "in-your-face evidence" of why Erich Wolfgang Korngold won an Academy award for this film symphony.
