Free Music Review: A masterpiece!! 10 STARS * * * * * * * * * *

This is one of my fave cds of all time. I bout the cd in 2000, in London. I only listened to ...& AND ON and BOOTY, just becuase they were funky. But about 1 1/2 yrs ago I was like "lemme listen to this!" and now I've realized the power oif real and intuitive music. Music from the soul cannot be denied. To the casual listener the 70+ minutes of music may run together, but each song is so different so unique. It begins with the ultra funky PENITENTIARY PHILOSOPHY, a good way to jumpstart this classic. Next, is DIDN't CHA KNOW the minor hit that is as deep as the baseline. LISTEN TO THE WORDS SHE SPEAKS THE TRUTH. MY LIFE is funky and paints a picture of where Erykah is in her life. ...& ON is good and I love the rap in the middle. It is probably the one song that prob doesn't belong, no where near as good as the original ON AND ON. But still good. CLEVA shows that Erykah may not be the most beautiful or talented woman, but she is still cleva and is a very powerful song despite its uptempo beat. HEY SUGAH is an interlude. BOOTY is funky and is almost an extension of CLEVA, she is tellin a woman for example, "You may have your PHD, but he is still fine wit me and my GED." Number 8 is where this cd goes into high gear. KISS ME ON MY NECK sets the tone for the rest of the cd, badu compares her mind to a flourishing garden and says whatever man steps her way must have water to water the flowers growing out of her mind. DEEP STUFF! A.D. 2000 is a ode to the man who was shot 41 times by NYC police in 2000. It is a slow song, but says when she was gone you won't name buildings after me so they can exist in dilapidation. Number 10 is one of my FAVES, ORANGE MOON is so beautiful. Everytime I see and orange moon I think of this song. It's so nice and its actually about how her son (Seven) is a reflection of her light, which makes him an orange moon. Poetry in song! IN LOVE WITH YOU is a duet with Stephen Marley, this song took some time to grow on me, but is very sweet and is a real love song. No "hittin it from the back", no "freak-a-leak", but instead 2 people repeatin, "I'm in love with you" take a listen more powerful than you think. At first I was dissapointed that BAG LADY was not the same as the video and radio, but then towards the end of the song when the breakdown begins her choruses repeat and repeat but then I realized that she wants to drill the idea into your head!!! Number 13 TIMES A WASTIN is nice and has a great message, but it just doesn't compare to the reason why this album is what it is. GREEN EYES!! GREEN EYES!! It is a 10 minute song divided into three movements. The ultimate break up song. No, "I hate you get your shit", not even "Tyrone-esque". The first movement Badu claims that her eyes are green because she eats a lot of vegetables and not becasue her ex is with another woman. The second movement shows a stronger Badu procalaiming her position. She is saying that he missed out on it, and she can do it all by herself. Just when you think she is walkin on, 7 min into the song it starts a relapse. She comes back to him and is sayin "c'mon we can make this work" , "I still love you." This song is the epitome of the end of a relationship. This song is so underrated and it pisses me off that music this good is overlooked, because Nelly's (who I don't care for) cd just came out. This should have been album of the year and all that other stuff. I highly recommend this cd to Baduizm and Worldwide Underground and even Her Live cd. It is remarkable to hear music this good. I love E. Badu I just hope that she can come back even harder, but I'm tellin you I discovered this cd bout a year late, but its never too late to discover good music!!
