Free Music Notes for New Amerykah, Pt. 1: 4th World WarFree Music Review: Don't waste your hard earned cash... Hit: 1 StarsIf you liked her previous work, don't even think about it. I liked her so much I saw her live in Phoenix, AZ several years ago. From this new cd--you won't even recognize that this is Ms. Badu. Her lyrics are shallow. There isn't a beat you can feel on any song. If you like noise and the feeling like you are at a drunken backyard garage band rehearsal...then buy it. Know that it pains me to write this. Signed, a former fan, hoping for a REAL Badu comeback.
Free Music Review: Brilliant Disc Hit: 5 StarsWhen I first heard this disc I knew right away that the masses, including some of her most fervent fans, would be turned off by this off-kilter effort. Many of the one-star reviews here are a reflection of consumer taste rather than the quality of Ms. Badu's latest offering, which is a masterpiece, in my humble opinion. Admittedly, the album does take a few listens to warm up to but once these funky, astral tunes reveal themselves to your soul you cannot deny Erkyah's otherworldly talent and incomparable inventiveness. Stand-outs for me are The Healer, Me, Soldier, Master Teacther, Telephone, and Honey, of course. She laces her lyrics with Nation of Islam ethics, politics, and spirituality. Some artists are deep for the sake of being deep but Erykah is distinctively deep here, and nothing seems gratuitous or contrived. Many contemporary consumers cannot appreciate change or challenge themselves to listen something new. Erykah has shattered the mold by breaking free from the neosoul strait-jacket, creating a masterful blend of hip-hop, funk-jazz-soul inflected tunes. This is E.Badu's, "There's A Riot Goin On," one of the greatest funk albums of all time. Dismiss this album at your own peril!
Free Music Review: I do, Badu. Hit: 5 StarsWow! I think Erykah Badu has reached a new level. Everyone of her albums have been awesome, but this one seems to have an extra amount of self exploration and almost reckless abandon. It seems this album is not the most accessible, but the most rewarding. My favorite songs, The Healer, Me, The Cell, Twinkle, That Hump Honey, and the "Brides of the Funkenstein" throw back Amerykahn Promise.
Free Music Review: Before the set starts... Hit: 1 StarsI try hard to find pros and cons in any product to keep it unbiased, but I have zero pros for this CD. I was so excited to hear it and looking forward to what was new on Ms. Badu's mind. It's already difficult enough for artists to get consumers to buy their CDs when bootlegs and downloads are far easier (and cheaper) to come by, but I'm anti-bootleg and try to support the artist. But my issue is when I get a bad product and have to once again shrug my shoulders at bootleggers who said, "I told you you shouldn't have bought that." As long as Badu has been gone, I would've hoped she could come up with more than ten songs, and to top it all off, most of the songs are someone talking or humming. I DIDN'T PAY FOR A CD TO LISTEN TO INTERLUDES! Ludacris has actually mastered interludes and intros--he starts his albums off by annihilating the beginning song to make consumers so amped up that they want to hear the rest. I listened to "Amerykahn Promise" and grew nervous. The first five songs sound like what you hear before a poetry set starts just to test the mic, not the real performances. I got all the way to number six before I finally found a song I could halfway vibe with. I'm a little put off by the scattered notes in the thank yous and words. Please let somebody type that from now on. I know it appears more personal, but it comes off looking so unprofessional. However, I was more interested in reading the words to the songs than I was listening to the album. I'm sorry, Ms. Badu, but I've loved all of your other albums. However, this one is being sold promptly.
Free Music Review: Love It! Hit: 5 StarsNever owned an Erykah badu CD-- saw the video for Honey and was wowed. Bought the album on a whim, and I love it. 70's funk explosion greatness. My favorite album since Amy Winehouse, and it actually pushed Amy out of my heavy rotation!!
