Canadian Music Store Free Music Notes for New Amerykah, Pt. 1: 4th World WarFree Music Review: Maybe it's ahead of its time ? Tryin' to be positive...I've always admired the fact that Erykah Badu had been a trailblazer creatively. She did it on Baduizm, again on Mama's Gun, and even broke some new ground Worldwide Underground, but this one is a little over my head. I think its great that she's experimenting with new sounds and song structures but I buy music to be inspired, enlightened and entertained. I got a little of the first two but not much of the third. "Telephone" is gorgeous, deep, moody and evocative. "Me" is introspective and shows a glimpse of her former pre-Worldwide Underground self (though the ending ruins a totally good vibe). "Honey" is a good little ditty, but, this time, its the intro she butchers. Even "Amerykahn Promise", with its early 70s blaxploitation theme is cool, new and inventive in a retrospective futurefunk type of way. The rest, I hope will grow on me. I adore Erykah Badu and will continue to be a fan of hers, and hey, as long as she's happy with the album, who the hell am I to judge? But, if this keeps up, I'll just have to be a fan of hers personally and not musically. I wish I'd bought my favorite songs individually instead of wasting thirteen bucks on the whole cd. My cousin told me I wouldn't like it. So much for not listening to kinfolks!!! |
