Esma Redzepova, deservedly honored with the title Queen of the Gypsies, is the great, passionate voice of Roma in Macedonia and the Balkans. This is a new recording, made in 2006 and 2007 in Skopje, Macdeonia and issued by the German Network label. The songs concern women's lot of life, of romance and its betrayal, of absence, of parental control, of sadness. With a folk band of accordion, clarinet, trumpet, bass, violin, guitar, keyboard, and percussion, the energy is high and the joy and the pain is felt. Festive brass music, ballads, rembetica-like laments, and happy dances are the rich variety of this album. I learned about Esma in the tour film Gypsy Caravan, a very fine introduction to Roma around the planet. This album is continuation of that deep spirit.
