Free Music Notes for EsperanzaFree Music Review: Voice of an Angel, Plays jazz double Bass like it's nothing - AWESOME!! Hit: 5 Stars
Esperanza is in my new top 5 of favorite musicians (make that top 3, possibly up to #1). Her singing (English and Portuguese) is so precise and her presence is very present and authentic.
In case you were not aware, she attended Berklee School of Music, at which time they asked her to be ON STAFF while attending, so she was teaching while attending she's that hot of a player!
I recommend this CD to the highest degree of whatever format you want to use.
Once she starts playing, you will have blinders on, musically coerced into watching and listening (and wondering "how can anyone be this good?")
I have never left this good of a recommendation before - you will be glad you bought this CD!
(I recommend buying the one FROM Amazon instead of used or from other buyers so that she gets her rightful pay for this so she can keep on playing, writing, composing, etc. - I just don't want to see her lose her ability to keep financially secure some black market seller.
Free Music Review: The Coolest Act EVER on Letterman Hit: 5 Stars
I heard an NPR interview with Esparanza Spaulding on my way to work one morning and I knew immediately what to suggest as a Father's Day gift, (even though Father's Day was six weeks off and her self-titled album was not due to be released for three more weeks). When it arrived it did not disappoint. Her vocals (Ponta de Areia, Cuerpo y Alma--Body and Soul en espanol) are breathless ascents up the grand scale, all the while her inventive and imaginative bass line keeps the whole ensemble in motion. No less an authority than Paul Shaffer announced her appearance on the Late Show as the coolest act they had hosted since coming to CBS, and after she completed her set Dave Letterman topped him with, "This is the coolest act we have EVER had on our show!" Get this album! She delights in every respect. This young tiny woman can educate a whole generation in the genre of authentic jazz in world saturated by elevator approximations of the art form
Free Music Review: Superb Hit: 5 Stars
It's been a while since I've heard an album this good. There are no weak tracks on this album.
Esperanza's vocals are often soothing and always spot on and her bass playing is omnipresent yet never overbearing. The music is relaxing but lively and the compositions are dynamic. Take track 6, "She Got To You": the song starts out with a funk rhythm then at the chorus changes to a subtle Latinesque rhythm topped off by sweet, soft saxophone which instantly reminded me of Paul Desmond. I wasn't expecting that but it was a welcome surprise.
The music is good enough for a jazz snob yet accessible enough for just about anyone. I've listened to a lot of music and a lot of jazz in general but it was great albums like this that led me deeper into the world of music. Listen to the samples and if you think there's even a slight chance you'll like it then you're right: do your ears a favor and buy this album.
Free Music Review: Have to jump in with my applause Hit: 5 Stars
I, like so many, was pleasantly shocked when Esperanza won Best Artist over Bieber, and I immediately googled her and picked up this album, her second. I was surprised that Bieber lost, and so excited to see that they had picked someone who, just from the first google hit, is so plentifully talented. This album is now up there in my favorite 5 jazz albums ever, probably only second to "Kinda Blue," and "Getz/Gilberto." Esperanza's music (much of it self-penned) is Jobim meets Davis circa "Bitches Brew": this record is eclectic, with everything from soft nightclub vocals and sultry bass to frenetic piano/bass jam session, as well as Portuguese and Spanish bossa nova and even scat.
Kudos and good show to the Grammys for bringing this phenomenal prodigy to the public eye! With talent and virtuosity like this, I wager we will never see Esperanza Spalding sell out her unique flavor. Get her other two albums as well!
Free Music Review: Like a room filled with sunlight.... Hit: 5 Stars
A jazz CD thats not so much about technical virtuosity as it is feel, and the feeling is quite simply beautiful. Esperanza has the vocal skills to go down as one of the great jazz singers. The bass is great too. Beyond that, there's some tasty piano playing and a few songs with horns. The music stands on its own, doesn't need a lot of "production". Much respect to Esperanza for eschewing the possibly more profitable venues and plunging deep into the ocean of jazz! Hopefully she will be strong enough to stay true to the music *cough*JossStone*cough* If there's any fault to be found with this at all, its that the lyrics are a little high school journally- not bad though- we're not talking Dashboard Confessional or anything.
This would be a great intro CD for someone who hasn't listened to Jazz- goes down like whole milk! Highly recommended.
