Free Music Notes for At Last!Free Music Review: Etta James voice is like a piece heaven here on earth! Hit: 5 Stars
I remembered when I first heard Etta James. The song "Sunday Kind of Love," came up in one of the scenes in the film "Eve's Bayou," which was released in theaters in 1997, and ever since then she has caught my attention.
This remastered re-release of her classic 1961 album is really stunning. It was also one of the most successful R&B *albums* up to that point (this came out well before the "album rock" era). She never achieved the crossover success of Aretha Franklin or Tina Turner, but if any female soul singer deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as those two, it's definitely Etta James.
She had several hits from this, in addition to the legendary title song. "Anything to Say You're Mine," "My Dearest Darling," "Trust in Me," and "All I Could Do Was Cry" is all the cream of the crop of early soul music. She puts her spin on a couple of gritty Chicago blues numbers ("I Just Want to Make Love to You" and "Spoonful," the latter being one of four duets with Harvey Fuqua of the Moon glows that are included here), as well as the jazz standards "Stormy Weather," "At Last," and "Sunday Kind of Love," which are my favorite.
She really showcases her virtuosity, and it works surprisingly well. Etta James never reached these heights again but came really close though. Her voice has traveled for many years to touch the ears and lives of today's listeners, and she will remain to do so for many years to come.
Free Music Review: AMAZING music Hit: 5 Stars
To hear the purity of Etta James is to be as close to perfection as is possible on this planet. "At Last" alone is worth the price of this phenomenal collection of soulful exuberant song collection. I cannot praise too highly when I tell you that this music has uplifted my very being, just from the deep feeling this woman has given to each note - each syllable. Whether she is rocking with Harvey Fuqua (of the Moonglows) on the song "It's A Crying Shame" or doing her own very special take on the classic "Stormy Weather" in a reach-right-into-your-gut variation, the ride you take is a thrilling one in so many ways.
I fell in love with this song all over again when I heard a singer at a favorite resort do this number and strangely enough when a ventriloquist through a puppet sang this title song that I just had to own this CD and I'm so glad I did. Etta James has joined Aretha Franklin for me as the royalty of soulful music. And that's saying something since I fell hard for Aretha while still in my teens so many years ago.
"Sunday Kind Of Love" is another cut that deserves high praise. The phrasing alone is superb, and if these songs don't touch you, I would seriously consider a soul transplant.
If you love music that moves you and makes you glad you're alive, this CD is a MUST.
Free Music Review: THIS C.D. IS RTHYM AND BLUES AT ITS ULTIMATE BEST!!!! Hit: 5 Stars
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE RECORDINGS THAT ETTA JAMES DID BACK IN 1959. WAIT TIL YOU HEAR "AT LAST", "TIME WILL TELL", "MY DEAREST DARLING" ETC. SHE EVEN SINGS WITH HARVEY OF "THE MOONGLOWS" IN "MY HEART CRIES" AND "IF I CAN'T HAVE YOU". THIS IS REAL CLASSIC STUFF. R& B WAS NEVER BETTER!WHETHER IT BE A LOVE BALAD TO A ROCKIN "JIM DANDY" OR "ROLL WITH ME. HENRY" ETTA JAMES IS THE DEFINITE QUEEN DIVA!THIS WAS WAY BEFORE ARETHA FRANKLIN. SHE WAS A COMBINATION OF DINAH WASHINGTON AND DO WOPP.SHE WAS THE FEMALE JAMES BROWN, BACK WHEN HE SANG "TRY ME". THIS GAL WAS WAY TOO UNDERRATED.SHE'S DEFINITELY "HALL OF FAME" MATERIAL.SHE WAS THE FIRST BLACK CHICK,BEFORE MARY WELLS, TO COME OUT WITH BLONDE HAIR AND A BLACK MOLE ON THE SAME PLACE WHERE MARILYN MONROE HAD HERS! THAT WAS DARING IN THOSE DAYS!HER HIT "ROLL WITH ME, HENRY" WAS BANNED FROM THE STATIONS. THE LYRICS WERE TOO RISQUE!BUY ALL HER EARLY RECORDINGS, HER SONGS ARE BEAUTIFUL AND SO IS HER VOICE! I STRONGLY RECOMMEND THIS ONE!
Free Music Review: Etta James is the real deal!! Hit: 5 Stars
I once was the proud owner of Etta James vinyl LP: "Etta James' Top Ten". So, when I saw this CD at my local record store and noticed it had several of the tracks I loved in the vinyl LP form...I bought it!
Man, Etta has a way with phrasing! Etta has that tear in her voice on chestnuts like "At Last", "Trust In ME" and "My Dearest Darling".
The track not included on this CD that was on the Top Ten album, "Pushover" was a gem.
But here are included 2 awesome duets with Harvey Fuqua (formerly of The Moonglows) "Spoonful" and "If I Can't Have You". On both of these tunes Harvey and Etta compliment each other's unique vocalizing.
"Sunday Kind Of Love" and "Stormy Weather" are classics!
As a matter of fact......as R&B singers go...Etta James is the only one who comes close to Aretha Franklin's claim to "Queen of Soul"!
Free Music Review: Pure Heaven Hit: 5 Stars
Etta James has a timeless sound! The soft melodic sounds from this album only compliment her soulful sound. Growing up in the 90's (yes, the 90's!), there have been some questionable artists come about. In my opinion, not a single female artist has sung with so much soul as Etta James. Her voice is one which has travelled for many years to touch the ears and lives of todays listeners, and she will remain to do so for many years to come. I was introduced to her by my Mother-in-laws friend, when I was searching for "that" song for our first dance. When I heard this melody and this angelic voice sail across the room, I knew... This is it! Etta James makes me fall in love with my husband over and over agian each time I hear her. Nobody has been able to move me the way she has with her voice. Now that's a piece of pure heaven here on earth!
