As far as I am concerned this is one of the Eurythmics finest albums and a true testament to the duos ability to rearrange musical flavors and still maintain a distinctive sound. Taking a very abrupt about face from the anthemic dance-rock style of Revenge this album pulls into it's orbit just about every style of mid/late 80's dance music you could think of from electronic sound collages,Nile Rodgers type dance/funk to different variations of Euro/Italo disco flavorings. All those genres inter-relate anyway but here you really see how each can influence the other and combine in infinate ways. Annie's singing style on this album is at least as variable and flexible as the music is and the lyrics vary from cryptic, repetitous chants to poetic and mildly dark reflections on the culture of the day and it's perceptions of beauty and glamour. No irony is lost that it was during the making of this album that the Eurythmics started to break up. After all sometimes events like that can lead to great music (see The BeatlesWhite Album (Remastered) as another good example). Not only to say that but the songs here are also intelligently written and creative such as "Beethoven (I Love To Listen To","I've Got A Lover (Back In Japan","Heaven","Do You Want To Break Up","You Have Placed A Chill In My Heart" and "Wide Eyed Girl". "Shame" is a very pointed song where Annie confronts everyone from the media to general backstabbers in regard to a sense of regret about instruction gullible people down a shallow, self destructive perception of good appearance. Even though the song has a strong 80's flavor like everything else here it actually says much about todays pop culture as that of the time. The title song and "I Need A Man" really bring out the slower, pointed funky beats as Annie takes on a gruffer Aretha/Mick Jagger style vocal tone and belts out the lyrics with a sneer and passion that even for her vocal elasticism gets an emotive quality out of her that's defiant and elegant all at once-part of the embodiment of soul which always influenced her style. "Put The Blame On Me" almost has a funk/rap flavor to it channeled through the guise of Euro electronica and well....I realize a lot of people aren't too impressed with "I Need You" but as a jarring, folkish Bob Dylan-like tune with Annie borrowing much from Bob's fractured vocal style is a really happy surprise at least to me. The album concludes with a near acapella note with the hopeful "Brand New Day" which has a mild African vocal harmony style. As it was originally this was a great example of the Eurythmic's divergant musical influences working itself into something cohesive via 80's dance-pop stylings. Again most of the bonus cuts are extended remixes and live cuts that do add a little to the originals usually by stronger orchestrations but again the most impressive of them is a likeminded 80's funk/pop version of "Come Together" which actually would'nt have been out of place on the original album. This album is a huge creative success that was commercially burried somewhat in it's time but if you appreciate Eurythmics complete musical qualities and want to hear one of their most consistant albums, especially if you enjoy their dancier and funkier musical sides this would be a great album for you to listen to.
