Free Music Review: Songbird
Hit: 5 Stars

I'm thankful to my twin, Penny, for introducing Eva Cassidy (with the album "Songbird") to me over 2 years ago. And to her hubby who introduced Eva to her....and so you see it just goes on and on. I just cry so many tears when I listen to her. Beautiful. I'm in love with Eva's incredibly beautiful, enchanting, soulful, haunting and bewitching voice which is capable of singing anything. "SONGBIRD" is the absolute BEST of all the albums I've bought ("Time after Time"; "Eva by Heart"; "Live at Blues Alley", "The Other Side"). I've given this album as a gift to many, many friends; and I've recommended it to loads of acquaintances and strangers. I talk about her a lot. My favourite tracks, in order, are: 'Over the Rainbow', 'Autumn Leaves', 'I Know You By Heart' and 'Time is a healer'. I just can't get enough of her voice. How terribly sad that she is no longer with us. Her voice will live on in so many of our lives. I think everybody should be exposed to her talent. There is a song for every need and emotion. I play this album over and over and never tire of it. And that's the truth. Her range is incredible. Amazing. Her band is brilliant too. I continue to wax eloquent about her and buy this album as a gift for young and old. Thank you for a real gem. A piece of gold. A sad loss.

As you read through these customer reviews, you're probably asking yourself how can so many customers feel so strongly about a female singer that few have ever heard? I know I was skeptical. I listened to the song samples on Amazon.com and was impressed enough to buy Songbird. From the first moment I listened to it, Eva brought tears to my eyes. This same reaction happens often now when I listen to her. Her voice is supremely beautiful and expressive and her ability to excel in all types of music is unequalled. For example, on "Time after Time", a later CD, she gives us in order: 1) a pop classic that surpasses the original, 2) a melodic country song with fiddle and approprate vocal twill, 3) a beautiful, finger-picking folk song, 4) a gutsy blues song, 5) a deeply soulful R&B song, and6) a traditional gospel song. ALL ARE ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING !!!

As a life-long music fan, I can't understand why "the industry" did not bring Eva Cassidy to the public long before her untimely death in 1996. What a shame that Eva never lived to experience the growing love and devotion felt by so many as they first experience her singing. Yes, it is true. We are truly moved by Eva Cassidy's songs and we want to share our feelings.

I love Eva's voice and the sincerity of emotion beneath the surface of its beauty. I believe she will always bring tears to my eyes.

Free Music Review: Eva, we hardly knew you
Hit: 5 Stars

I haven't been so enthralled with a female vocalist since I was first introduced to the songs of Loreena McKennitt several years ago. I'm confounded by the fact that Eva Cassidy's musical legacy is so limited because of her death of cancer at age 33 in 1996. But, at least I have the CD SONGBIRD to enjoy, as well as Eva's handful of others which I'll likely purchase.

SONGBIRD is positively delightful. Even when Cassidy's choice of songs veers into the realm of jazz, which I don't particularly care for, her talent is so remarkable that I set aside my bias for a few minutes. The track that originally caused me to buy this CD is "Over the Rainbow", a well-established traditional piece like "Autumn Leaves" and "People Get Ready" that are also present, all three of which are given new life by Eva's non-traditional interpretations. The title song and "Fields of Gold" are two others which I can, and will, listen to repeatedly. Heard with the knowledge of the singer's premature death, the lyrics of Cassidy's recordings make tears a possibility. You wonder. Did she suspect?

Eva could apparently sing anything: folk, blues, jazz, gospel, country, pop, and Celtic. And whatever genre it was, she could, and does, put her heart and feelings into it. I think I shall miss her music so very much.

Free Music Review: A True Artist with an unbelievable voice........
Hit: 5 Stars

I had never heard of Eva Cassidy until my attention was captured by a soul-touching rendition of Over the Rainbow. I stopped what I was doing and turned to see who I had just heard singing. It was the Nightline story about a beautiful, young singer who had tragically passed away at the tender age of 33, but left behind a collection of songs that stir emotion and tug at your heart. Her voice is a true gift from God and her style is one that is truly artistic! I can't remember when I have heard an artist or collection of music that I can just listen to and never get tired of hearing. My mother always said Patsy Cline was her favorite artist because you could feel the emotions she felt when she sang. Eva Cassidy is Exactly the same. If you truly focus on listening to her music, you can feel her passion for singing. Fields of Gold & Over the Rainbow, and People Get Ready bring tears to my eyes. I am thankful her parents were generous enough to share her with the rest of us. Her voice and music are ageless and her legacy will live on in those of us who understand, embrace and appreciate her courage to record what made HER happy, not what record producers wanted her to sing. I know she is in heaven, doing what she loves most, singing with that beautiful voice the Lord gave her.

Free Music Review: WONDERING IF YOU SHOULD BUY IT??? YES YES YES YOU SHOULD!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

I've just completed my Amazon purchase for two other Eva Cassidy CD's, her voice is just one I have to hear more of. I ordered Songbird last week because I had to hear for myself just what all the talk and praise was about. I especially wanted to hear her version of 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' that I had read made people pull over in their cars and cry when it played on the radio. I received my CD on Monday and immediately skipped forward to hear it. Needless to say, I was sold. It was like the phrase "sang her heart out" was invented just for Eva. Anyone can take a microphone and sing a song however good they sound doing it. But it was like Eva took a microphone and then got lost in her own world of beautiful notes, feelings, emotions and the obvious joy that singing gave her. Reading the liner notes you find out she also did her own harmonies as well as play acoustic guitar and keyboard. A rare find these days in the studio-enhanced artists that are currently on the charts. She could do it all it seemed. But sometimes and we don't know why, there are those who are put here for just a short amount of time. Left only long enough to leave their mark or in Eva's case, her voice. A voice now gracing the angels in heaven as a beautiful Songbird.
