Free Music Review: Songbird CD is every music lovers dream
Hit: 5 Stars

I went to an ice show and when Michelle Kwan skated to the most beatiful song I had ever heard, it was the song, not the skating that moved me to tears. Michelle was graceful and added a moving element to the song, but the song alone was glorious and I found myself even closing my eyes to listen, forgetting I was supposed to be watching an olympic athlete skate. That song I had never heard before, and thought I would never know who sang it. Recently I saw a special on tv, a tragic story of a very young gifted singer, who's life was cut short and talents stolen from us, even before most people even had a chance to hear her angelic voice. Her story so sad it deeply stirred me, and when they played a portion of that song, Fields of Gold, on that special I was elated to have found my mystery singer! The next day I ran out right away and bought Songbird. This CD is the incredible! Never before has one singer had the ability to stir my soul as her music does. She sings with such a lovely quiet calm, peacfully and humbly as if she didn't know she had the most incredible voice you have ever heard. She isn't showy at all, listening to her one would think she was somewhat of a wallflower personality, an incredible creature lurking in the shadows, yet shining like the sun! When the lady sings, the world stops, and yet she hardly notices. And when she sings, she exposes her beautiful soul bare and gives you a piece of it. Her voice carries such softness at times, and sours like mighty gales at others, and either way she will carry you away. I don't think she ever sang a thing that didn't have meaning to her, never a thing she didn't feel deeply in her spirit and her expressions of that will convince you. She was made for music, it was her gift. Her music is moving and I'm very glad I found out about her and got this CD, not one penny will be wasted if you buy it. I can't wait to get more CD's of hers.

Free Music Review: You are going to need four of these, honest.
Hit: 5 Stars

These are a collection of very different songs sung by a shy young woman with the power of voice and subtlety of phrasing that can move from quietly coaxing tears from your eyes to powerfully shaking the firmament. She combines her velvet on steel voice with an unerring musical instinct and applies it to sculpturing each word as if they were being sung on their own. She moves from an ethereal Over the Rainbow to an earthy Wade In the Water and does it in a way that makes you forget anyone else has ever sung these songs. I read somewhere that she had a cold while recording some of these cuts. Well, I swear to you that Eva with a cold is still something marvelous. This CD has an ambience that belies the intimacy and lack of affectation that can only be found when the producer is only out to capture the magic of an artist he admires rather than to produce something that sells. I came across Eva like everyone else does. It always happens by accident. Someone played a cut for me and I was mesmerized. I can't add much more value to the review stream here since 280+ reviewers have already told you why they are now EVAngelists. But here is some practical advice about buying her CDs. I won't say I told you so, but you will ultimately realize that you will need four copies of this CD. One is for the car to get you through any commute. One is for work to get you through the day, and one is for home, of course. What is the fourth one for? Well the moment someone else hears this CD they are going to want to borrow it. This is completely unavoidable because you will be compelled to introduce Eva to your best friends as an act of love. You might even find yourself stopping strangers on the street to play it for them on your Diskman. So yes, the fourth one is so you don't have to be without the first three. Eva you charm my life. Thank you so much for finding the most direct route into my heart.

Free Music Review: Still A Rare Find
Hit: 5 Stars

When I frist wrote this review on my birthday in 2001, I had no idea how important and popular Eva Cassidy's music would become to many of us today. After reading so many new reviews of her music, I wanted to revisit my own thoughts about her music, and I am still of the same opinion. Cassidy's vocals still surprise and delight me. She will remain an unexpected and almost unknown favorite. Even though I crave to hear new works from her, I will never tire of the music she gave us while she was here on earth with us. Knowing we have a limited library of her music makes each song become even more reverent every time I listen. My earlier review: Seven hours ago I had never heard of Eva Cassidy until that day in October. Then a co-worker, knowing of my participation in and appreciation for great music, approached me with several of Eva Cassidy's CD's. Now, after hearing her Songbird CD, she has been elevated to "All-Time Favorite" status in my book. Cassidy's moving and intimate vocals woo you into her web of exquisite and varied renditions --part jazz and blues singer, part folk singer and gospel singer. Being a singer and musician myself, I sometimes tire of a whole CD of one artist's sound. Cassidy's chameleon-like voice transcends any I've come across in some time, and I doubt I will tire of hearing her any time soon. She can be mellow, she can belt, she can skat, she can nail it and still weave a tapestry of a story in music quite like no other. Heartbreakingly, Cassidy is no longer weaving her musical tapestries in this world, and all we have left of her on terra firma are several magical and somewhat self-fulfilling prophetic recordings. Saddened that her life was cut short and that her talent was taken from us before it had a chance to take root in a grander venue. So glad I have been blessed with the gift of her music now. Her music is still truly a rare find.

Free Music Review: Stunning
Hit: 5 Stars

Until the Winter Olympics in which Michele Kwan skated to Eva's "Fields of Gold", I had never heard or heard of Eva Cassidy. Michele's performance that night was remarkable, but I was drawn immediately to the music. I knew the song but not the voice. All I could say was "who is singing that?" I was stunned by the purity, the phrasing, the eloquence. No one in my family knew who it was. A few minutes on the Net with just the song title and I found references to Eva. Within another few minutes I discovered she had already tragically left us at a very young age. I tried a few MP3 samples on the Net and instantly recognized Eva to be one of the greatest singers I had ever heard. I immediately went looking for every CD I could find of hers.

This particular CD is a compilation from other CDs. I have it and strongly recommend it, but I would recommend you buy the source CDs. All of them have numerous other fine tracks.

Listening to this woman sing is a transcendant experience. I can play "Fields of Gold" on the way to work and I am transported to a magical place, such that when the song ends and I transition back, I just have to play it again to experience the enveloping emotion of her voice.

I can't think of another singer that does this to me. I would put Karla Bonoff in somewhat close company with Eva, and a fair amount of Sarah McLachlin, but Eva has far greater range and vocal sophistication. She revitalizes old, old standards like "Autumn Leaves" and "Wonderful World" with renditions that should be considered definitive. There are so many examples where she takes complete possession of other people's songs that I think this puts her on a musical pedestal with essentially no peers.

Thanks to Michele Kwan for choosing Eva's music to skate to that night.

Free Music Review: Feeling low and empty? Eva will light up your heart & soul.
Hit: 5 Stars

If you are an Eva fan, no need to read on. If you're on the fence about buying an Eva CD, then just do it. I'm pleased that Eva is finally getting "famous." But it's more than that. Eva possessed a VOICE FROM THE GODS and in an odd way, perhaps her all-too-brief life was perhaps a message of sorts. In a short life and "career," Eva was able to softly warm your heart and soul, and was also able to belt one out. What an utterly wonderful soul she was -- and thank God that her songs will live on. I can't tell you all just how many times I feel so utterly alone, empty, demoralized by the rigors of urban life -- and to come home and put on Eva is like an IV drip of Prozac. So many nights - and days as well - Eva has pulled me from the "depths of despair" with her tunes.

I do believe that Eva Cassidy was put on this Earth to send us messages of love, hope, empathy for the sadness of life ... I feel like I'm talking to a shrink ... but I can only say that she was someone so very special and her gift was to reach us all. There are a few singers who have done this to me: Eva is the best. But others - Minnie Ripperton, Sandy Denny, Diana Krall -- to name a few -- have given me much happiness -- but Eva? Well, she's in a league of her own. In an odd way, I feel that she is a very good friend.

Sure, get this CD ... play it and you'll be back on ordering the entire catalog of her works.

And I have a 5-CD carousel ... I fill it up with Eva and put it on random play. Soon I discover that two hours have passed and I'm in a very special and peaceful place.

Yup, I'm just a nutcase wanting the world to know how much this woman has and can lift the souls of the lonely out there. She makes me happy. I like happy.

Enjoy the peace, love and happiness Eva Cassidy can bring into your life.
