Free Music Review: Eva...the angel looking down
Hit: 5 Stars

I just recently heard of Eva Cassidy on the Nightline tribute that aired about a week ago, therefore I suppose I'm a little behind the discovery that everyone else seems to have now noticed. However, I was intrigued by this golden, angelic voice of a person who had come and gone before I ever even knew her name. The Nightline show was compelling enough for me to go out and purchase the CD, sight unknown. Not familiar with her style, or anything about her other that what appeared on the show, I stepped out on faith and bought the CD. What a pleasure it is. From the moment the first track began, I knew I would not regret my purchase. The first time I heard the first few lines of Fields of Gold, tears were streaming as I pictured this wonderful person who was no longer here among us. There's something about her voice that wraps your whole body into it, a comfortable calm that just consumes you as you are moved through each song. Wade in the Water is jazzy and gives the feel of old time jazz clubs with smoke filled rooms, and pretty ladies in dressy dresses with top hats. The inspirational Autumn Leaves depicts the strain of a lost love, and the passion it takes to truly love. I feel that this song alone shows the open and honest heart of Eva. That is why I titled this as such......she truly is the angel looking down to see that the world loves her music, and she's enjoying it from Heaven, the best place of all. Thank you Eva, for all the love you showed to us in your music. I know that one day I will be able to tell you in person, but for now this is the best that I can do.

Free Music Review: It's a Small World
Hit: 5 Stars

During a business trip last May, I was killing time in a music store in Atlanta, Georgia. The owner of the shop was so interesting and had all sorts of "world" music, obscure jazz, offbeat classical, etc. We easily slipped into animated conversation about a variety of musicians and their art. Before long, my attention was drawn into the sensuous groove emanating from the speakers. It was Eva Cassidy singing "Wade in the Water". I asked about it and the shop owner started in with the story of Eva. It hit me, "Wait a minute, I know who this is!" The shop owner said, "No, this is a singer from Washington, DC" and I responded "Yes, that's right!" and the shop owner said, "No this is an unknown woman who died of cancer in 1996. Virtually no one has heard of Eva Cassidy" and I said, "YES, I have! I am from that area and my daughter went to a recording session with her dad not too long ago and she came home and told me about the sad story about a woman who died of cancer." At that moment, the trumpet solo coming through the speakers was a sound I knew very well. Time stood still for me! The music really hit me. It occurred to me that my emotional reaction was heightened by the odd coincidence. Now, some months later, seeing all these reviews and Eva's phenomenal success in England is reassuring. It's just good music, plain & simple. There is no big marketing machine behind it; no hype; and it's not even really "in style". It's just music from the heart, and people love it. Inspiring.

Free Music Review: If you don't love Eva, you need therapy
Hit: 5 Stars

It's ultimately that simple. So if you wrote a negative review, revisit your life. I say that without anger, malice, or ego. Something is seriously wrong with you, and you probably know it. Her music is the acid test.

If you have high blood pressure, shattered dreams, hopelessness or depression, get ready for at least momentary relief. If you have a favorite solo singer CD, slide it over to make room for a new one. Eva Cassidy is the best American popular singer to have ever recorded an album, hands down. Others may have cut a song or two of equal merit, but none continually demonstrate the depth of her command or reveal such perfect transparency of soul in every song in so many genres and styles as does this spectacular genius.

Have you ever been frozen by a song? If not, get ready. When you buy your first CD, go rewrite your budget for the month, because you will want to buy one for everybody you care about. Better buy another magazine for your car's CD player, too. I hide her CDs in my magazines, tucked in with other great music, and set the sequence to random, so I get these little surprise delights throughout my commute. I know she adds a day to my life every time I hear her sing - and this will happen to you, too. You might have to be a little rude to talky passengers because you will prefer to hear 'Over the Rainbow' or 'Fields of Gold' for the 500th time to anything they could possibly have to say. Eva's tiny opus is a magnificent gift to this angry, deceitful age...dear lady, we miss you and we are so grateful.

Free Music Review: haunting sounds
Hit: 5 Stars

i'd been hearing a great deal about eva lately - she seems to be have a "discovery" in the uk and picked up this cd to see what things were all about. i know a little about her - she died a few years ago, very few folks knew about her about her outside of washington, d.c., she was supposed to have a beautiful voice.

what i didn't expect was how much this cd would impact me. her voice is amazing - clear, rich, emotionful. and whether the material is a cover of a well known song or some nugget she either wrote or discovered - she makes every song her own.

who'd have thought that the world needed another version of "over the rainbow", after all, didn't judy garland record the definitive version? well, eva's version demands attention and rightfully gets it. the same with her other covers. she simply wraps her vocals around the songs and puts her own spin on them. i doubt i'll be able to hear sting's version of "fields of barley" again quite the same. she's definitely in the league of joe cocker, aretha franklin, and bette midler in the cover realm.

i'm not quite sure why, but the saddest thing is knowing that she's no longer with us. maybe it's because she is only achieving a deserving fame when she can't appreciate it. maybe it's knowing that these songs are it and there won't be any more. maybe it's something in the way she things. but in listening to the music, i feel somewhat sad and melancholy. not in a bad way, but in a sobering way.

however, it's not prevented me from playing this disc over and over...

Free Music Review: A rare talent!
Hit: 5 Stars

It's so sad that she died so young and that she never had the chance to experience all of the accolades that she definitely deserved. This woman could sing! She had a lot of range as a singer too, and "Songbird" showcases her diversity. On Sting's "Fields of Gold," Eva's performance is tender and hauntingly beautiful and really gets you in the gut, while "Wade in the Water" and "Wayfaring Stranger" really move! It's kind of like Eva was part Karen Carpenter and part Aretha Franklin. "I Know You By Heart" is just so honest and pure. It's really heartbreaking. I definitely don't mean that in a sappy way, either. It's like she lets you into her heart when she sings it. Very few people have that kind of talent. She sings a really beautiful version of Christine McVie's "Songbird" and does a rendition of "Over the Rainbow" that is so personal, intimate, and so honestly phrased that you don't long for the Judy Garland version, like with most covers of this standard. It's almost like she has reinvented the song. My favorite, I think, is "Time Is a Healer." Eva sings the words or the story of the song (unlike a lot of others--Celine Dion, for example) and also connects to the music in a very passionate way.

On one hand it's really sad because she is gone and we'll never know just how great she would have been, but through this recording and the others available, Eva Cassidy has left us a legacy of music that will touch anyone who takes the opportunity to listen.
