Free Music Notes for FallenFree Music Review: ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL!!! - From a Christian reviewer Hit: 5 Stars
The first song by Evanescence that I ever heard was My Immortal, and by the end of that song, I was in love with this band. They had come up with such a unique, beautiful, and haunting sound that I had never had the pleasure of hearing before, and I still have yet to find a band that can even come close to matching what Evanescence has brought into this world.
Now four years ago, when I first became a fan of Evanescence, I was not at all into the whole goth scene because it really creeped me out. However, you definitely don't have to be a goth to appreciate this music. Everybody needs a little bit of darker-sounding music to listen to once in a while. So since that fateful day back in 2004, Evanescence has become my very favorite band, and I have been obtaining whatever music of theirs I can, including The Open Door, Origin, the EPs, and just about every other demo they ever recorded. But out of everything Evanescence has released, Fallen is still my favorite album. Don't get me wrong, I highly recommend The Open Door as well, because the music from it is WONDERFUL, but it just doesn't seem to have that same special element that Fallen has. It's almost as if there's some highly addictive chemical in this CD, where you can listen to it a hundred times in a week and still be left craving more of that same...stuff. I don't know how else to explain it, but I'm sure that anyone else who has heard this album will agree with me.
Okay, this has already been long, but I wanted to let whoever cares know that I am a Christian, and I feel that I should give my fellow Christians a heads-up on what to expect from this album as far as lyrics. Well, here goes:
Going Under- This song is just about how Lee wants to get out of a presumably abusive relationship with another person, and she won't let this person drag her under anymore.
"...So go on and scream, scream at me/I'm so far away/I won't be broken again/I've got to breathe/I can't keep going under..."
Bring Me to Life- Lee has said that she wrote this song about a long-time friend, but it could be interpreted as a plea to God as well, with lines like these:
"...My spirit sleeping somewhere cold/Until you find it there and lead it back home...Call my name and save me from the dark...Bring me to life..."
Everybody's Fool- This song criticizes celebreties who lie and allow people to idolize them, and she knows that they are fakes pretending to be perfect.
"...Oh, how we love you/No flaws when you're pretending...Without the mask/Where will you hide?/Can't find yourself/Lost in your lie..."
My Immortal- This is about a friend who has died but still lingers in Lee's mind.
"...I've tried so hard to tell myself that you're gone/But though you're still with me/I've been alone all along..."
Haunted- A cautionary word to parents, if you are thinking about getting this CD for your younger kids (12 and under), just know that this song does have content you may not want them listening to just yet. This song is about a girl who is held captive by someone she can't see, but he is always tormenting her. He is the only one she knows and loves because he is what keeps her alive, but at the same time she hates him for keeping her where she is.
"...Watching me, wanting me/I can feel you pull me down/Saving me, raping me...I won't let you pull me down..."
Tourniquet- This is another song you should take some caution with if you're thinking about letting your younger kids listen to this, as the message is that the singer is spiritually lost and confused and wants to die.
"...Am I too lost to be saved?...My God, my tourniquet/Return to me salvation...I want to die!!!..."
Imaginary- This is just about Lee's imaginary world she wants to go to when the real world is too much for her to handle, but she can't seem to get there.
"...Swallowed up in the sound of my screaming/Cannot cease for the fear of silent nights/Oh, how I long for the deep sleep dreaming/The goddess of imaginary light..."
Taking Over Me- This song is about obsession. Like Bring Me to Life, it could be interpreted as a prayer to God.
"...I believe in you/I'll give up everything just to find you/I have to be with you/To live, to breathe/You're taking over me..."
Hello- This song is about Amy's younger sister, who died when she was just three and Amy was six.
"...Has no one told you she's not breathing?/Hello/I'm your mind, giving you someone to talk to/Hello..."
My Last Breath- Lee says that she was inspired to write this song after the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center. It tells of a person who is dying and it is through the dying person's perspective.
"...All I wanted to say was I love you and I'm not afraid...I know you hear me/I can taste it in your tears...Calling me, calling me as you fade to black..."
Whisper- Now this song sounds very spiritual, but the lyrics are kind of creepy for younger listeners. It seems to have a similar message to Tourniquet.
"...Catch me as I fall/Say you're here and it's all over now...Don't turn away (Don't give in to the pain)/Don't try to hide (Though they're screaming your name)/Don't close your eyes (God knows what lies behind them)/Don't turn out the lights (Never sleep, never die)...I'm frightened by what I see...Fallen angels at my feet...Death before my eyes, lying next to me I fear..."
So, there you have it, those are all my opinions on this item in a nutshell. I hope this was helpful!
Free Music Review: I don't think a word exists in any language that could even begin to convey. Hit: 5 Stars
I'll be the first to admit that, though I've known of Evanescence practically since they came onto the music scene, I had---well, I won't say a negative, rather an indifferent attitude toward them. I'd never heard them, but my first thought was that with a name like Evanescence they were probably another hip hop outfit, and that isn't a type of music you'll find in my CD collection. I'm a rocker myself, Inxs, Tom Petty, Metallica, Tool, that sort of thing, so I wasn't sure what to expect from Evanescence. Since I'd long ago tired of listening to the radio play the same stuff over and over again, I didn't get the chance to hear Evanescence that way, and I don't know if I would have.
All that was before I actually heard them. My girlfriend Tammy is a huge fan, eagerly awaiting the release of Open Door, and it was during her last visit that we decided to find the band's official web site. She played me some of the audio samples, but of course some of the quality is lost in the playing of those, so I didn't get a true feeling for the band. I did get enough to want to hear a song straight through. Since it's been performed three times on Rock Star this season, once by a girl who totally murdered it, I decided to hear the genuine Amy Lee version. I downloaded it and was hooked. So yesterday I decided to take a gamble and buy the full length album, Fallen. It's been in my sixty-CD changer/home theater stereo ever since and indeed it's playing in the boom box I have in my college dorm room as I write this. To say that I don't regret the money I spent would be an understatement. I might be right there with Tammy buying Open Door when it comes out. Here, for those of you who wish it, is a quick breakdown of the songs on Fallen.
Going under: A great start to a great album. It opens with a heavy guitar and a throaty vocal from Amy Lee, and then builds into a crescendo of pent-up anger and frustration. One of my favorites.
Bring me to life: The band's first single. It opens with a haunting piano intro which is quickly joined by Amy Lee's erie, angelic voice. I've heard people say that Miss Lee's voice sends chills up and down their spine, and I was no exception. The song builds quickly into a heavy rock crescendo, which Amy's voice compliments quite nicely. The guest vocals by Paul McCoy are an excellent edition as well. Another favorite of mine.
Everybody's fool: Another rocker, this song conveys Amy's contempt for celebrities whose primary selling point is their looks. It's a song that basically asks what the hell's wrong with everybody. Not necessarily my favorite but a cool song nonetheless.
My immortal: A touching and beautiful track that shows off both Amy's phenomenal vocals and her talent for playing the piano. If you listen to the lyrics you get the feeling it's a tribute to a loved one, perhaps Amy's little sister?
Haunted: A sinister melody complimented by Amy's exquisite voice. The song begins with a creepy goth sound and builds into a rock crescendo, all the while complimented with Amy's vocals.
Tourniquet: Quite possibly my favorite song on the album. It's a cover, but a darn good one. It's a song that plays around rather heavily with the Christian view of suicide. "My god, my tourniquet, return to me salvation." Amy's vocals once again left me cold. The anguish and desperation in her voice are almost palpable.
Imaginary: This song seems to me to convey a sense of wistfulness in both its melody and its lyrics. A favorite of mine.
Taking Over Me: Yet another favorite of mine. Amy Lee's voice once again sends a chill through me, conveying a sense of profoundest love and deepest longing. "I need to be with you, to live, to breathe, you're taking over me." All I can say is if she sounds this good on a CD I'd love to hear her up close and personal.
Hello: Another piano driven track, this is Amy's tribute to her deceased sister, a track she can't bring herself to perform live. Again, not one of my favorites but I do like it.
My last breath: Another favorite, this song tells the story of a person's desperate attempt to convey her love to her family one last time as she lies dying. As usual, Amy nails the vocals head on.
Whisper: Not the song I'd have picked to close the album, but a good song nonetheless. I really like the latin chorus at the end.
I don't know if all copies come with it (I doubt it), but my CD came with a remix of My Immortal, which starts out soft just like the original version, but picks up with guitar and drums later on. I personally like this version better but I'll listen to both. It's funny, but Amy herself apparently isn't terribly fond of this particular song because she feels it doesn't capture the sound ofEvanescence. Perhaps she's right, but it's a good song nonetheless.
As you can see, there isn't a song on this album that I don't like. This is a rare occurrence for me. In this case they're all excellent in my opinion. I'll close this by saying just one last thing. For all those who reviewed this album and thought there was nothing to any of it, by all means hold onto your opinions. Just don't expect to convert many of the rest of us.
Free Music Review: Not A Spinoff, Unique, Awesome Band. Hit: 5 Stars
Okay, in a nutshell, Fallen is one of the best CD's I've ever heard, or owned. In my opinion, it has everything that makes a good CD. Good lyrics, written by the band, a lead singer with a beautiful voice, catchy tunes, strong rock beats (that don't overpower the vocals) and easily heard lyrics. For example, AFI - Total Immortal, you can't hear what the hell they're singing, but in Fallen, you can get every word clearly that is sung in Amy Lee's ethereal voice. The guitar driven album is definately one for you if you like any of the qualities I listed.Fallen: 11 song album, 44 minutes and 19 seconds of great music. I'll give a song by song breakdown of the album, but get one thing straight. ALL OF THE SONGS ON FALLEN ARE DIFFERENT AND THEY DO NOT SOUND THE SAME IN THE LEAST. I've read a few people who said: I was wondering when the song would be over, and I found it was already on the 8th track. OR All the songs sound the same Are you saying that you couldn't tell the slow, piano and vocal ballad "My Immortal" to Evanescence's hit single "Bring Me To Life"? Or that you couldn't tell the slow ballad "Hello" from the intense, guitar driven "Whisper" with the latin chant? I certainly can, and I think that a lot of people would just be able to distinguish each song from the next, even if they had never heard of Evanescence. 1. Going Under The second single released by Evanescence, heavy on the guitar but Amy's low singing comes through. The music video goes very well with this song, despite the added clapping and other various effects added in. 9/10 2. Bring Me To Life The fast paced, somewhat overplayed first single by Evanescence. If you still love this song, despite hearing it all those times in Feb, March then you should definately buy this album. Bring Me To Life remains one of my favourite songs on the disc, because of the level of energy in it and the amazing vocals. 10/10 3. Everybody's Fool The lyrics are very good in this song, and it starts off with very interesting work on the guitar. The song's memorable lyrics are close to haunting (Without the mask/Where will you hide? Can't find yourself/lost in your lies). 8/10 4. My Immortal The chilling, tear bringing ballad My Immortal shows off Amy Lee's more than amazing voice, with only the piano in the background. This song sends chills down my spine, it's full of emotion and if you don't want to spend 18 dollars on the entire CD, buy this single. 11/10 5. Haunted Haunted has almost a techno feel to it, but the hard rock that goes along with the chorus puts it right back into the 'goth/rock' genre. Another good song with good vocals and interesting choir behind it. 9/10 6. Tourniquet Tourniquet is one of the songs that made people believe that Evanescence was a Christian rock group, with it's various mentions of spiritual things. This song is one of the best on the album, with it's slow beginning and then it's buildup of energy and intensity. 10/10 7. Imaginary Furthering the diversity of the album, Imaginary uses strings as the featured instruments. The song, again, has spectacular vocals and interesting lyrics about hiding away from reality. 9/10 8. Taking Over Me Taking Over Me reminded me of Bring Me To Life, but it's different and good in it's own way. It's a bit slower, and they vocal's are only better in the ballads. It, like BM2L, starts off with piano and divulges into the guitar and drum. 10/10 9. Hello The most depressing song on the CD, Hello is another piano/vocal ballad that evokes emotions such as: Shame, Dispair, Depression. They lyrics are nothing spectacular, but Amy Lee's voice make them amazing. 10/10 10. My Last Breath My Last Breath, though driven by the guitar again, is a softer, sadder song. The verses are sung quietly, and Amy's voice once again surpasses expectations, the lower notes sound great. 9/10 11. Whisper My Last Breath leads into Whisper very well, and there is a very smooth transition between the two songs. Whisper combines all the elements on the CD, and this songs seems to have the most energy put into it. It has a cool latin chant at the end, and it's got piano, guitar, drums, strings, all the intrumentation of the other songs combined. The vocals are very good, and the lyrics are very well written. 11/10 This CD is well worth picking up, and if you can hit high notes, it's fun to sing along with because of the energy you have to put into it. Amy Lee's voice is different from any other female I've ever heard. She can hit the high notes, and the low notes. It's truly an amazing experience, listening to this CD. People have been comparing Evanescence to bands such as Lacuna Coil, Nightwish, The Gathering. I assure you that just because they all have a female fronting does not make one a spinoff of the others, or one better than the others. I've explored all these bands and Evanescence still comes out as my favourite. Though, all of the mentioned bands are very good with strong female vocals. If you like Evanescence, explore Lacuna Coil first and foremost, then The Gathering and Nightwish. Also, if you're not that into goth/rock try Garbage. Fallen - 10/10 Masterpiece Hit: 5 Stars
Most of us never heard of Evanescence till their true debut in the movie Daredevil featuring "Bring Me To Life" and "My Immortal". By those songs alone, the audience made their first and final judgements. Not giving Evanescence a chance is something one should simply just not do. The band previously put out their debut ablum named "Origins" on a smaller label. Because it only has 60 copies out, they are precious and if you manage to get your hands on it, your lucky, these things are quite pricey. Cutting to the chase, with Amy Lee on Vocals, you get a spooky, ethereal voice- very beautiful, and resonating. You HAVE to listen to the demo songs to understand the unexplainable heavenly voice. 1) Going Under- 9/10 You've most likely heard this on the radio already or seen the music video. It's about revenge from living in ignorance to long...it's not their spookiest but it hits the right spots. This song has some places in it that really demonstrates her voice. 2)Bring Me To Life- 9/10 One of the most overplayed songs on the radio at the time, I say it was overrated and judged to quickly as being "rap" when this IS the only song with a duet. Guy from the 12 stones has probably messed this song up seeing how I prefer it better when seeing them live without him in it. It's pretty good but...overrated. This song first demonstrates the notes she can hold and the instruments used in the band. 3)Everybody's Fool-10/10 Definetly one of my favorites. This song definetly shows how well she can sing in a song about Everybody's Fool, someone who betrayed another (themselves too) and can't live without the lie..."Without the mask, where can you Hide, Can't find yourself lost in your lie?" 4)My Immortal-10/10 One of their best. In this song about a woman loving someone who died as if they were still alive- the suggestion reminds me of the basis of their previous album's song "Even In Death" although the rhythm, sound, and instruments are used differently. Very emotional, and an easy listen played slowly only on a piano and violins."ive held your hand through all of these years but you still have- all of me". 5)Haunted- 10/10, Personally my favorite track demonstrating the crazy, spooky, side of Evanescence. Her voice is intriguing and demanding in this song what seems to be about a ghostly rape victim taking revenge on her murder. With lyrics like "Hunting you- I can smell you- alive...your heart pounding in my head", I know something very strong is about to come with her voice- and it does in variant ghostly screams of revenge. 6)Tourniquet- 9/10 This song is very good, and it can get stuck in your head pretty long if you listen to it to often as I did. This song is about commiting suicide. The only thing I didnt like were the christian lyrics about "My god, my touriquet, return me to salvation", though in interviews, Lee claims this song is tore away from the christian bliefs that if you commit suicide (an ultimate sin) and you beg god for forgiveness, will you go to heaven or hell? Because apparently he forgives all that loves and believes... But..."I tried to kill the pain- but only brought more..I lay dying and I am pouring crimson regret and betrayal" ...catch you and refuse to surrender you. 7) Imaginary- 10/10 Apparently this song is about being crazy. No normal person would stay "In my field of paper flowers, and candy clouds of lullaby, I lie inside myself for hours- and watch my purple skies fly over me". Another wonderful track, and demonstrates her notes once again. 8)Taking Over Me- 8/10, wasn't that great to remember, and reminds me again of My immortal and even in death. It's a good song if you want to hear her voice demonstrations and more ghostly lyrics but i was pretty below her perfect average. 9) Hello- 10/10 Very short compared to her usually long songs but nonetheless flawless. This song is about a dying-dying-dying-dead girl on the playground and her innervoice trying to wake up a soul that's already left the body. It's one of their greatest and what made me fall in love with Amy's long, soft voice. 10)My Last Breath- 10/10, Who wouldn't want to hear a song about their lover dying in their arms, and begging you mentally to not be afraid? Heh, I love it. It's pretty long and has wonderful lyrics. Lyrics like "I'll miss the winter, a world of fragile things, look for me in the white forest, hiding in a hollow tree" combined with her ethereal voice send shivers down my back. 11) Whisper- 10/10 Another incredible song.."Fallen angels at my feet, Whispering voices at my ear, Death before my eyes, Lying next to me I fear, She beckons me shall I give in, before my end shall I i begin? Forsaking all I've fallen for I rise to meet the end?" Awesome lyrics, Amy's voice at it's most powerful, and includes a background in Latin saying "Save me from darkness, Save me from evil". Under-rated. Very Nice.
Free Music Review: My All-Time Favorite Album Hit: 5 Stars
At first hearing "Bring Me To Life" on the radio, I was less than impressed. It was too dark, too unappealing. Then, as the years passed and it somehow remained a favorite of multiple stations, I started to like it. I looked it up on Napster but sadly Evanescence was not a featured band. About a year later I looked them up on Yahoo and watched the music video to "My Immortal". That was when I realized, "Wow...this band is more talented than I thought!" From there my love of their music grew until I finally (after looking at two WAL*MARTS, a Target, and Barnes & Noble) found it used at a little music store. It has since become my favorite album by a mile.
For one thing, Amy Lee is incredible. I think some people tend to overlook just how talented she really is. She could have any kind of musical career with a voice like that, including opera. The fact that she is a wonderful songwriter and pianist makes her every producer's dream I'm sure.
Ben Moody is also a talented musician and songwriter. He really had lot going in this band, I don't know why he would switch to co-writing for Avril Lavigne.
The songs are just so deep and emotional. They're not light and fluffy, they really have feeling behind them. Here are my ratings for each song:
1. "Going Under" - 5/5 stars - "Going Under" is a hard rock song with kind of a creepy edge. It's good enough by itself, but I recommend watching the music video, too. You can find it on Yahoo.
2. "Bring Me To Life" - 5/5 stars - My favorite song on the album. It's kind of dark and has a rock edge, but it's also kind of romantic in a way. The switching between Paul McCoy of 12 Stones and Amy Lee's vocals is my favorite part of the song. But the entire song shows off both of their vocals. I recommend seeing the music video, too.
3. "Everybody's Fool" - 4.5/5 stars - This song is about how fake Hollywood is, and how the fluff and glamor that magazines show is just all a lie. It's a really good song. Again, great music video, too.
4. "My Immortal" - 5/5 stars - A beautiful song about loss. It's one of the most touching songs I've ever heard, and the lyrics are really catchy. The piano is also really pretty. The music video is good but the song by itself is great, too.
5. "Haunted" - 5/5 stars - At first I thought this song was eerie and kind of icky, but it grew on me. Now it's yet another of my favorites. I like all of the little breaks and special sound effects, especially when Amy carries the note from the rock chorus into a really pretty set of chords on the guitar. The choir sounds great in the background, too.
6. "Torniquet" - 4.5/5 stars - This song is about someone committing suicide and wondering if they're going to go to Heaven or not. It would be a disturbing song, except Amy makes it more musical with runs and octave-jumps. You also get to hear her infamous scream.
7. "Imaginary" - 4.5/5 stars - This song gets stuck in my head a lot. The lyrics look sugary..."In my field of paper flowers, and candy clouds of lullaby. I lie inside myself for hours, and watch my purple sky fly over me." But the song is actually really good. It's neat, too because rather than having the songs break, the violins from "Torniquet" go straight into "Imaginary".
8. "Taking Over Me" - 5/5 stars - I love this song! It sounds like a really great movie song that you would buy the movie album just to hear. It's deep, emotional, and dark but it has lots of little runs and eerie background vocals that make it even better. One of my favorite songs on the album.
9. "Hello" - 3.5/5 stars - This is a sad song about Amy's little sister passing away. The lyrics such as "Did no one tell you she's not breathing?" and "Don't try to fix me, I'm not broken." are really...I'd like to say catchy, but not catchy...I think well-written is the word. It's a slow song, but it shows off Amy's range a bit. Note that she can't sing it live for emotional reasons.
10. "My Last Breath" - 4.5/5 stars - The guitars in this song are really neat. The chords are catchy and fit perfectly with Amy's lyrics. It's a combination of beautiful and hard rock; a song about death.
11. "Whisper" - 5/5 stars - Another great song. The lyrics are catchy and just...flow. I like how it alternates between Amy's lead vocals and her whispering background vocals. There's also a choir in this one, too. For those of you who are confused about what they are chanting, they say: "Servatis a pereculum.
Servatis a maleficum." It is Latin, meaning: "Save us from danger (peril), save us from evil."
Overall, fantastic album. I doubt it will ever be surpassed on my favorite's list. I can't wait for their next album this August!
