Free Music Notes for FallenFree Music Review: Phenomenal record, truly amazing. Hit: 5 Stars
I had been hearing this incredible song on the radio, and it was one of those spine-tingling tracks; you know, the ones that give you "goose bumps." I come to find out that the song is called "Bring Me To Life", by a band named Evanescence. Obviously, I had to hear this record. I couldn't wait to hear it, but I also "feared" hearing it...afraid it wouldn't be anything close to what I was hoping for. I had such high hopes in mind for this band, I just knew they couldn't live up to my hopes. I have never been more mistaken. This is one of the best records of this decade, so far, and arguably one of the best Rock records of the past 2 or 3 decades. This is an incredible piece of art. "Bring Me To Life" was the single that introduced this dynamic band to me, and had the intensity that I was hoping they could repeat throughout the rest of the record. I thought if they could come fairly close with half of the record, I would be fortunate. I had my doubts and fears. "Bring Me To Life" is one of those tracks that you just know is the best on the album. You can't imagine a better, or even equivalent track to accompany it on the same record. Evanescence puts a full smorgasbord of "Bring Me To Life"-like tracks together here. Every track has some vibrant, intense, colorful or beautiful quality to it. They combine some of the best arrangements done in years with one of the best vocal performances done in decades. Don't get me started on this incredible voice. Amy Lee gives one of the best female singing performances in Rock history on this record. I truly feel this to be true. Listen to the clinic she conducts on "My Immortal" and "Hello", or the brooding depth she gets to on "Haunted", with a full choir accompaniment arranged beautifully into the latter track. These are all perfect tracks. As a matter of fact, every track on this masterpiece is perfect. Yes, it is PERFECT. I find nothing, absolutely nothing, I don't like here. When I listen to every track and get "goose bumps", or when I hear Amy Lee pouring all of her passion into "Hello" and I begin shedding tears, I know I'm listening to something special. This record touches all of the musical bases also. When the record starts out, it starts with a heavy power chord storm ("Going Under"), and it continues to dabble on the heavier side until the fourth track ("My Immortal"), where it is just Amy Lee and a piano and some light string arrangements. Dazzling. It goes on to one of the best arrangements I've heard in Rock music with "Haunted." This is a track that is dark, brooding, and even scary at times. When the full choir kicks in, and it becomes an operatic chant as an accompaniment to Ms. Lee's bellowing...it is simply haunting,...hence the title. The record shows you many faces throughout, each face being OH SO PRETTY. It covers all the bases. Maybe it's got a lyric problem?? Not a chance. The lyrics are just as strong as the music. The artistic lyrics of "Imaginary", or the captivating religious yearnings heard in "Tourniquet" are all done with class and precision. Experience these words: "In my field of paper flowers, And candy clouds of lullaby, I lie inside myself for hours, And watch my purple sky fly over me." ("Imaginary") The entire album has lyrics this artistic and passionate. With Amy Lee singing "Mary Had A Little Lamb" it would be worth listening to, but she's provided with lyrics such as the ones above, and it's simply magical. This is a record for all ages, for all styles of Rock music lovers,...this is a record for all time. Go get it, experience it, feel it reach into your soul and not let go. Before I give you the overall rating, let me leave you with another lyric. This one is from "Bring Me To Life": "How can you see into my eyes like open doors, Leading you down into my core, Where I've become so numb without a soul, My spirit sleeping somewhere cold, Until you find it there and lead it back home." Wake your spirit up, and lead it home to this record. OVERALL RATING: 10 PERFECT! (1-10 scale) For more Dr. Music reviews, visit www.new-sounds.com/DrMusic
Free Music Review: Blew me away.... Hit: 5 Stars
I just recently discovered Evanescence by mistake after visiting a friend's web site and clicking a link for Evanescence - Hello. I absolutely LOVED the track and, having friends who were obsessed with the album and the band, naturally decided to borrow/buy the album. A friend lent it to me, and here I am, listening, several days after becoming obsessed with it myself. I just cannot stop listening to it... Amy Lee's voice is so much more polished and mature than anyone else in her age group of singers, such as Avril Lavigne, Brittany Spears, etc. It's like an angel from heaven has come down to bless us with her talent, and it's no wonder why the song "Bring Me To Life" attracted so many fans to this small Arkansas band and singer! And, without further ado, onto the ratings...
Going Under - This song is not my favorite, but nonetheless, it is a great song. The rock beat really strikes my fancy, and the lyrics are well-polished. 9.5/10
Bring Me To Life - The song that inspired Evanescence's fan base, and it's really easy to see why! The lyrics are great, the tune is wonderful, and it's really easy to pick up. It's haunting and rocking at the same time, and overall a great song. It has its shortcomings, however, as it will become really repetetive after a while of listening to it because it is so awesome! 9.5/10
Everybody's Fool - A great song, but it's basically repeating the same thing, merely in different words, through the entire song. 9.5/10
My Immortal - After listening to all of the album and Hello before it, this was my new favorite song. As another reviewer put it, it may be what heaven really sounds like. This is one of the band's songs that you hear everywhere, like Avril Lavigne's Sk8er Boi, and you just instantly love it, but you just never know who the artist is... then you find out, get the album, listen to the song and the rest of it, and become obsessesed instantaneously! Its haunting lyrics and beautiful piano make this an instant classic, not to be missed. 10/10 Haunted - Amy Lee sang the heck out of this one, and because of it, it's great. It's not quite at bloody as Tourniquet, but creepy all the same, and in this reviewer's eyes, creepy = good. 10/10
Touniquet- This song really makes you brood over death. Amy really convinces you that she's in serious pain when she sings so soulfully, and it makes you so sorry for her, that you just can't help but like the song. However, I'm not really one for the morbid-type, so marks down for the gruesome details. Don't get me wrong though; this song is still great. 9/10
Imaginary - Amy describes how she retreats into her own world to escape the horrors of this one, but she can't decide which one she likes better. Very soulful, just like all of the other songs on the album, and one of my personal favorites. 10/10
Taking Over Me - It seems like Amy is willing to drop everything and find her true love, who has taken over her soul and now is morunful for him because he left. The lyrics are great, and the entire song has a very catchy beat. 9.5/10 Hello - This is the song that got me hooked on Evanescence. Haunting and beautiful lyrics, Amy's beautiful voice that will keep you awake (and slightly insane because of sadness and other factors) for weeks to come, and absolutely haunting melody on the piano, this is my personal favorite song on this album. It maintains the sad note of Haunted and Tourniquet, but with much less violence. She doesn't know if she's sleeping or not, and then she realizes that death really does exist, and that nothing will ever be the same. Let me scream for a moment: I LOVE THIS SONG!! 10/10
My Last Breath - When I listened to this, the first time, I got the lyrics stuck in my head because Amy sung them so beautifully! The beat is catchy and fun, and the lyrics are great. Overall, a great song. 9.5/10
Whisper - This song is probably the worst one on the CD, though don't get me wrong; I still love it, but it just isn't up to par with the others. I do, however, love the Latin at the end; Amy translated it roughly to "Save us from danger, save us from evil," and it really fits the mood of the song. It gets pretty slow at the end, so that turned me off of it a little bit. Still a good song nonetheless. 8.5/10
Overall, this album is one of the most polished I've ever heard in years, and it really got me hooked on the goth/rocky genre. I simply can't wait for the next one! Keep up the good work guys!
Free Music Review: They're back! Hit: 5 Stars
I got this CD for my birthday last year, but didn't get round to playing it until about 11pm (promptly fell asleep and Haunted gave me nightmares). And I've got to say that save Origin, this is my favourite CD in the entire world, full stop, no questions asked.
GOING UNDER: Didn't like this one that much at first, and it's only recently that I've really started to appreciate the phenomenal vocals on this track, possibly the best vocals on the whole CD. Amy belts out the chorus with everything she's got, growls the dark verses to great effect and the whole thing climaxes with 'I won't be broken again!' and a decent riff from Ben Moody. 8/10
BRING ME TO LIFE: Aha. People generally have one of two grudges against this song, one that it's overplayed, in which case I can point out that it's overplayed for a REASON, because people LIKE IT. The people who complain that this song is too 'mainstream' are generally the type that shun anything that is popular regardless of the quality because they're so desperate to be different. The other problem people have with this song is the whole tired Christian debate. I am an athiest and personally I think that just because she's begging to be saved, that does not necessarily imply salvation through religion. She wrote this about a PERSON who she believed could see into her, so suck on that, biatches! I love this song, it grabs me from the first gentle piano notes, building into a passionate chorus interpersed with some reasonable rap from Paul McCoy of 12 Stones. 9/10
EVERYBODY'S FOOL: This one really spoke to me - in it I can see stupid shallow celebrities *coughParisHiltoncough* and all those cows who pissed you off in high school. The song lashes out and reinforces the image of the Amy we love - the strong woman who shuns the pressure to be a size zero blonde who sells her body to the media, does her own thing and looks damn fine! I loved the choral work in the background. 7/10
MY IMMORTAL: What can I say? The vocals are weaker than on the whole band version, but the piano is a lot more delicate, so each has their redeeming features. Those bloody strings are irritating though... 8/10
HAUNTED: Kills the peace of My Immortal totally. Personally I find it a bit too dark, a bit too wild - Watching me/Wanting me/I can feel you pull me down/ Saving me/ Raping Me - it's an unsettling song. I have to be in a certain mood to listen to it, but I loved Moody's riff, not to mention the fabulous choral work that makes this album so unique 7/10
TOURNIQUET: It's a bit emo, I've got to say, and it's not my favourite. It plays around with the Christian view on suicide and it's definitely interesting, if not quite my cup of tea 6/10
IMAGINARY: This is the most metal of the three released versions of this song, very gothic and very whimsical. I loved the lyrics and I think this track would do great music video material. Great riffs again from Moody
TAKING OVER ME: My personal favourite. It's quite simply a love song, passionate and beautiful and achingly sad. It deserves more credit , despite its slight poppy feel because it's so vivid and genuine. I especially love the lines You saw me mourning my love for you and touched my hand/I knew you loved me then. 10/10
HELLO: Beautiful rippling piano, sombre cello undertones, low vocals that climb to a climax at 'Don't try to fix me, I'm not broken!' Sure, it's depressing, but it's not exactly going to be a cheerleader chant if it's a tribute to her dead sister, is it? It's a personal song for Amy and I think it was very brave to put it into the album 7/10
MY LAST BREATH: A desperate attempt to convey a message of love at the deathbed, with Amy's soaring, passionate vocals, strong drumming and an interesting techno intro. Great song 8/10
WHISPER: This one really rocks, powering in with a strong guitar intro and Amy's breathy 'Catch me as I fall'. The verses are great, and the chorus has fascinating background vocals that give the whole thing a new resonance. The strings and the Latin chorus that close this track showcase the uniqueness of Evanescence.
MY IMMORTAL BAND VERSION: Bloody beautiful. I read some review saying that Mozart could write the piano part in his sleep and I'd just like to say - WELL DUH! MOZART WAS POSSIBLY THE GREATEST MUSICAL GENIUS IN HISTORY! EVANESCENCE AREN'T CLAIMING TO BE MOZART, YOU IDIOT!!!
What else is there to say about this song? What CAN you say? You just need to listen

Free Music Review: Not Evanescent At All Hit: 5 Stars
These guys are here to stay. Through their perfect usage of Amy Lee's beautiful voice and memorable, heavy guitar work, combined with stunning electronic backing, Evanescence has proven to me that they are far beyond a "simple pop band". They have something to say.Unlike what others have said, I have found that Evanescence's lyrics are quite good. "Call my name and save me from the dark / wake me up inside / bid my blood to run / before I come undone / save me from the nothing I've become / bring me to life" is the overplayed segment from the single, but other songs on the album have far more powerful and moving lyrics. The thing worth repeating is Amy Lee's voice... she has a haunting, stunningly forceful sound that I honestly haven't heard anywhere else. She's Sarah McLachlan with more passion; a Sinéad O'Connor who's not afraid to scream; and someone unlike any other singer in the world. She, and her band, are truly unique in their message and meaning. "Going Under" is a great opening, although it's less like the other songs. This is where listeners first get a glimpse of Amy Lee's incredible voice... very good song, but it's not particularly inventive. "Bring Me To Life", the single at the moment, will certainly give you an idea of their potential, and is unquestionably one of their best songs, but the rest of the album shows how much more they can do. I did not find any of this repetitive or unimportant--every song fits perfectly in the mix. "Everybody's Fool" is an angry, powerful song that shows this band can rock with the likes of Linkin Park just as well as they can break your heart with a ballad... like the next one. "My Immortal", a piano ballad, is one of the most breathtaking new songs I've heard in a long time. Amy's voice evokes every emotion at once, and the heartbreaking piano backing her is simply superb. "Haunted", my favorite song, is filled with absolutely astounding technical expertise--echoes and twisted bits of sound flow throughout thepiece. Amy's voice lends a credence to the roar below her, and turns this song into an instant classic. When that little beep comes in, breaking into a heavy rock chorus, you know you're in for a treat. "Tourniquet" is another breathtaking work, with more heavy Christian undertones. I didn't mind them, even though I'm pretty much anti-religion, because I figure, hey, if it led these people to do this, what's wrong with them wanting to talk about it a little? Fortunately, there really isn't much of this at all on the CD unless you're trying to look for it. This song features a very memorable guitar line and chorus, and will probably be stuck in your head for quite some time :) "Imaginary" is simply breathtaking. Amy's voice is just exquisite, and the melding of piano and hard rock sounds astounding. "Taking Over Me" has their best lyrics, I think. "But who / can / decide what they dream? / and dream I do.. / I believe in you." One of their very best songs--with everything you could possibly want; great instrumentation, great vocals, great emotion displayed, and that gorgeously anthemic sound that Linkin Park is so good at. Then again, that describes all of "Fallen"... this is a fabulous album! "Hello" is heartbreaking in its honesty and haunting slowness. The way she says "Has no one told you / she's not breathing? / hello..." is a lesson to all vocalists alive at this moment on how to put emotion in your lyrics. This song stands alone as one of the most breathtaking Evanescence may ever do, and a prime example of why this band will stick around... they are extraordinary! "My Last Breath" is the most Sarah McLachlan-esque of any of the songs, but backed by an incredible guitar line it becomes so much more. Piano fades in and out of the lyrics, giving the entire thing a poetic sound far more potent than all the loud guitars in the world put together. "Whisper" comes up too fast--suddenly you realize the album's almost over! Nonetheless, it has the same infectious melodies and fabulous instrumentation that makes Evanescence such a great band. The addition of violins and chanting in the background gives this a more ancient sound--fabulous. If you're a fan of Linkin Park's "Meteora", do yourself a favor and buy this gem--it is every bit as good, if not better.
