Free Music Review: The best album... EVER!!!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

Over 13 million albums sold and 6x platnuim, do I need to say more? Evanescence is the best thing to happen in a long time. Their music is just out of this world and the band just rules. Amy Lee the singer has the best voice ever and has been said she is the best Rock female singer since Blondie. And the rest of the members Rocky Gray (drums), John LeCompt (guitar), Terry Balsamo (their new guitarist he's not on here) and William Boyd (bass guitar) just kick butt and can really rock!!! And Ben Moody, have fun writing songs with Avril and Kelly Clarkson, Amy is way better then them!!!! All the songs on the album are written by Amy Lee (wrote most of the lyrics not BEN MOODY!!), X-Band member Ben Moody (wrote some lyrics and the music) and also on some songs David Hodges. Ok now on to the album:

Going Under (10/10): I love this song!! This song is the one that got me to buy the album. It is a very dark song in parts and then just rocks the rest!! This song is about an abusive relationship or anything you can relate to it seems.

Bring Me To Life (9/10): This is the song that started it all from them. I really don't like this song that much but its an awesome love song.

Everybody's Fool (10/10): This is my favorite song on the album!!! It's about fake people like Britney Spears who will do anything to sell a CD! Love it, Love it, Love it!!

My Immortal (10/10): This song is the most beautiful song ever writen. It has earned the band many of awards. One being the most sold sheet music. I love this song very much and can relate to it.

Haunted (10/10): This another one of my favorite songs, it's about an abusive relationship. The voice syncronizers work perfect in this song. Unlike Britney and them Amy can sing and only uses voice effects to make the song eary not to improve her singing.

Tourniquet (10/10): This song is about suiside but is a cover song. The drummer Rocky Gray was in a band before Evanescence and they wrote this song. Amy and Ben redid the song and it sounds perfect!!

Imaginary (10/10): Another beauitful song by Evanescence which is about not wanting to be where you live or how you live, you want to live in your imaginary world where everything is perfect. I really like this song because I can totally relate to it!!

Taking Over Me (10/10): Probably to most under-rated song on the album. This song is a love song about wanting and dreaming about someone you have a crush on or just need that person. I can relate to this song alot and am still dreaming about Amy Lee (why haven't you called lol).

Hello (10/10): Another beauitful song, this one is about Amy Lee's little sister who tragicly died at a young age. So far there has been no performance of this song at any Evanescence concert. This is a slow song and a very haunting one at that. Amy Lee shows us her singing talent in this one and I give major props to her!!

My Last Breath (8/10): I don't listen to this one much because I just don't, I guess. It has an awesome part in it though where it goes:
"i'll miss the winter
a world of fragile things
look for me in the white forest
hiding in a hollow tree (come find me)
i know you hear me
i can taste it in your tears"
This part is just amazing! The meaning is weird though, it is about telling someone you love them before you die, I think.

Whisper (10/10): This song I think is about suiside but I don't know. It is the heaviest song on the album and I am guessing the preppy people hate it, am I right? All I can say is Whisper is a very crazy song live and I love it!!!

I can't wait for the next Evanescence album, I heard rumors about it being out later in '05 so hold on tight and stay in there. If you don't already, make sure you pick up Evanescence's Anywhere But Home DVD/CD of their live concert in Paris!!! It's awesome and crazy so go check it out!!! And trust me it's 110% percent live, that band rules and you hear every song from Fallen (except Hello) live and some others not on Fallen!!!!!! Well cya next time!!

Free Music Review: A promising debut
Hit: 5 Stars

Did you ever wonder what would happen if Tori Amos got together with Queensryche?

My hunch is that the result might sound something like the new band Evanescence. The Oxford English Dictionary defines Evanescence as:

1. The process or fact of vanishing away.
2. The quality of being evanescent; tendency to vanish away.
3. concr. An evanescent thing. rare.

I for one, hope that this promising freshman band will stick around. You probably know the band for their hit "Bring me to Life" from the Daredevil soundtrack. I didn't see the movie nor do I have MTV, so my first exposure was while listening to local station 98KUPD. I immediately knew that I had to find out more about this band, "to the internet!" A quick search later and I had found the answer from dozens of fan sites that had already sprung up on the 'net.

Little Rock Band founders, Amy Lee and Ben Moody, describe their music as "rock ... But the twist is that the band's music is epic, dramatic, dark rock." While they don't achieve the dark drama of Black Sabbath's "Headless Cross", they come very close given the processed sound that the major record labels currently produce. Fallen's songs are largely concerned with "dark" topics such as death, betrayal and loss; but some songs hold glimmers of hope as in "Bring Me to Life" and "Tourniquet." The latter is an interesting dark metaphor equating Christian salvation to a tourniquet, something of a spiritual last resort. I should note that Lee and Moody do not see Evanescence as a "Christian Band" and indeed there is not the evangelical feel of, say Stryper, when listening to the album.

For my part, many of the songs seem concerned about loosing oneself in another as in "Going Under," "i'm going under / drowning in you / i'm falling forever / i've got to break through" and in "Haunted," "watching me / wanting me / i can feel you pull me down."

One of the songs that I enjoy the most is "Imaginary." As a lit person I can appreciate the introspective viewpoint this song is written from: "i linger in the doorway / of alarm clock screaming monsters calling my name / let me stay / where the wind will whisper to me / where the raindrops as they're falling tell a story". Clearly there is an escapist element where the outside world is chaotic and harsh. What really makes this song for me is the careful ebb and flow of tension with the release given by the harmonies.

One thing I noticed while listening to Fallen is that some of the rifs, movements and phrasings reminded me of other songs. This is not necessarily a bad thing, it shows their influences, but the group may not be to the point where they are stealing instead of borrowing, if you know what I mean. Although they don't list Queensryche as an influence, I hear similarities between "Whisper" and Queensryche's "Suite Sister Mary" not only in the choral presence but even the tenor of the lyric and guitar rifs. Again, that isn't a real criticism of the album, which I think is extremely enjoyable and well done. Give them a listen.

Update: I just saw Evanescence in concert. They gave an energetic performance that had a real sense of spontaneity. For example, since this is their first tour they only had a limited repertoire of songs to choose from and they supplemented those with a couple of well known covers, "Zero" by Smashing Pumpkins and about half of Metallica's "Enter Sandman". To give you a sense of how this went down, Ben, a Metallica fan, started playing the famous opening chords to "Enter Sandman" and Amy laughed saying she didn't know all the words so the crowd would have to sing them. About halfway through the song, Amy held the microphone up to Ben suggesting he sing and the song abruptly stopped. They had a good laugh and Amy asked if they could play one of their songs. I thought Amy's voice held up pretty well even though she appeared to be struggling with the Arizona heat (it was still 100 during the concert).

Free Music Review: Amy Lee and crew saves me from the nothing I've become
Hit: 5 Stars

evanesce--to dissipate like vapour, disappear gradually, fade away. [Latin: evanescere, to vanish, e (completely) vanescere (to pass away) from vanus (empty, vain)]

The songs on Evanescence's debut album, Fallen, fit in two different categories. One is the blaring heavy nu-metal guitar and industrially-programmed drums over which Amy Lee sings, such as "Going Under." The others are gothic-style ballads of angst and pain that showcase Lee's beautiful voice, which is the real featured talent here. Call Evanescence the Amy Lee Experience, if you will, or an alternative/nu-metal version of Tristania.

The first of two songs that were highlighted on the Daredevil soundtrack, "Bring Me To Life", has some terrific lyrics pleading an ideal to fill up one's dead and lifeless soul, in a gothic Frankenstein's monster kind of motif. "Wake me up inside/call my name and save me from the dark/.../save me from the nothing I've become." And no, I don't mind the guest vocals by 12 Stones' Paul McCoy, nor the fact that it fits the first category.

The other Daredevil song, the painful loneliness piano ballad of "My Immortal" is more like it. "These wounds don't seem to heal/this pain is just too real/there's just too much that time cannot erase" is indeed the soundtrack of my life right there, and Lee's McLachlan-like voice and the strings are like a warm hug I need. The piano melodies are reminiscent of Enya.

Things become more gothic and spooky with "Haunted", and Lee's vocals take on an eerie edge, as industrial synth drums and the pulsing nu-metal guitar kick in. Things take on a disturbing edge, when the second chorus goes "I can feel you pull me down/saving me r-ping me/watching me" and the gothic choir adds to the weirdness.

The suicide song of the metal "Tourniquet". She likens God to her tourniquet and calls for a "return to salvation." At one point, I hear "I want to die!" The angst of Lee's voice is felt when she sings "My wounds call for the grave/my soul cries for deliverance."

"Imaginary" is something that Tristania might do, crunchy guitars mixed with a lovely female voice. I love the dreamland aspect of this song and Lee's vocals really soar: "In my field of paper flowers/and candy clouds of lullaby/I lie inside myself for hours/and watch my purple sky fly over me." I identify strongly with this line: "Don;t say I'm out of touch/with this rampant chaos-your reality/I know well what lies beyond my sleeping refuge/the nightmare I built my own world to escape."

In "Taking Over Me", trying not to think of a lost love is problematic because "who can decide what they dream? And dream I do..." Lee's voice is a powerhouse, as are the metal guitars, which mirror her emotion.

"Hello" is a melancholy piano ballad showcasing Lee's voice and is of someone lost in a haze of daydreams: "Hello. I'm your mind giving you someone to talk to."

Symphonic strings and heavy guitars lead off and continue throughout "My Last Breath" of a dying love. A backing choir and a frantic strings back up "Whisper", of a struggle to stay alive. "Don't turn away/don't give in to the pain/don't try to hide/though they're screaming your name." The choir sing in haunting Latin, backed by strings towards the end.

Fallen is an attempt to mix crunchy nu-metal with lovely soaring Sarah McLachlan/Tori Amos type vocals. The results surprisingly work, but it reminded me what attracted me to groups like Tristania. However, on other songs, we see Amy Lee proving she can sing as well as Sarah McLachlan or Tori Amos. She has so much potential here, that she'll have no problem getting a solo career, and when she does, to paraphrase from a song here--bring her back to life. Just when I thought 2003 wasn't yielding a decent crop, out comes this magical mixing angry guitars and painful angst.

Free Music Review: A Breathtaking experience...
Hit: 5 Stars

Just one general note before the track breakdown. Listen to the lyrics on this album, folks. This isn't like any other band's lyrics, where the motto is "I loved her, she dumped me, I was depressed, yatta yatta yatta." No. The lyrics on Fallen are simply astounding, chilling, profound, haunting, intense, heartrending. Nine of the eleven songs on this album have made me cry. Go figure.

Going under - Amy Lee's favorite 'Fallen' song, Going Under is one of the three "Gothic Tracks" of the album, should you consider Evanescence a Gothic-inspired band. Its dark, angsty, richly worded, very original, and overall, an enchanting opening to the album. 16/20

Bring Me to Life - The most famous Evanescence song. A breathtaking and portent-filled piano melody begins the song and is then mutated into what has won numerous awards, including Best Rock Song and Best Hard Rock song. Amy Lee's vocals are absolutely incredible and the lyrics will render you speechless. 20/20

Everybody's Fool - A dazzling guitar riff sets the tone for Everybody's Fool. Full of despair and determination, it is a perfect balance between the forces of good and evil. Perhaps the most powerful lyrics in the album are found in this song. Coupled with a sensational melody and administered by Amy Lee's passionate vocals, Everybody's Fool is more than a song. It's a tour de force. 17/20

My Immortal - Pure pain and anguish spilled into a musical melody, Grammy Nomination 'My Immortal' is Evanescence's most popular song after 'Bring Me to Life'. Exquisite vocals, agonizing lyrics, soothing piano, and a stunningly beautiful melody will yield tears on the toughest of hearts. 20/20

Haunted - The second of the three aforementioned "Gothic tracks". VERY dark and EXTREMELY disturbing. The choir addition at the end will only serve to haunt you further. Creepy and bone-chilling to the core, if the music in Haunted won't leave a strong impression on you, the lyrics will. Guaranteeed. 16/20

Tourniquet - A magnificent guitar opening is steered into forceful, painful vocals and a torture-filled melody. Uniquely dark. The strings at the end of Tourniquet serve to lead up to its larger counterpart, Imaginary. 16/20

Imaginary - Considered by Evanescence themselves to be one of their best songs of their five-year professional career, Imaginary is the epitome of classical music richly embellished with hard, dark rock, embroidered with a thread of pop and laced with just a dash of metal. Add Amy Lee's spine-tingling voice to the mix and you've got yourself a celestial musical masterpiece. A true magnum opus. 20/20

Taking Over Me - As with Bring Me to Life and My Immortal, Taking over Me opens with a heavenly piano solo which opens the gate to a striking guitar sequence. Amy Lee's dazzling, powerful vocals and lyrical talent are oh-so-exposed in this heartrending creation. There is an angelic vocal solo with soft piano accompaniment near the end. Overall, simply beautiful. 20/20

Hello - Written for the death of Amy Lee's sister. Gentle piano notes lead to ardent, passionate passages with a low cello solo near the end. Of course, Lee's voice only serves to enrich. Truly heartbreaking. 17/20

My Last Breath - Interestingly enough, this song opens up with an almost pop-like sonancy. Commencing with synthesizer, it is then transformed into a classical Evanescence production. Very powerful lyrics and compelling melody. My last breath is what many consider to be the "love song" of Fallen. 14/20

Whisper - This legendary song (Whisper and Imaginary are Evanescence's oldest masterpieces) speaks for itself. Orientally-themed, grippingly lyricized, and the third of the three aforementioned "Gothic tracks", Whisper is a mightily enchanting piece. The Latin at the end finishes off the album on a dark, angsty note. 16/20

All in all, musically, lyrically, and vocally this album is absolutely flawless. Buy it!

Free Music Review: Bring It On
Hit: 5 Stars

Evanescence is a rather shady group. I heard they have 3 other albums out, but you can't find them in most music stores (I'm still asking around). The debut (which means the first one you can find easily) came out in early 2003. Don't stop yourself from buying the CD from the cover. Yes, the songs are dark and a bit depressing, but there are no other scary pictures in the album. Amy Lee's voice is haunting, and the songs always have an interesting twist.

1. Going Under- I think this was a single. This song has a cool part in the beginning (about 24 seconds into the song). There is a nice piano in the backround. This is a very good opener, it's fresh and jsut all around good.

2. Bring Me To Life- This is the track that most people, if they hate it at all, hate it for a very foolsih reason. That would be the rapper in the middle of the song (and, contrary to popular belief, that is not Ben Moody, it's Paul McCoy from 12 Stones). It's a pretty trivial reaosn to hate the song, he's not in the song too much. It's a very good song, but I'm rather bored from all the radio play.

3. Everybody's Fool- This is a song so true about America. It is about all the people like Britney and Jessica. Well in general I guess it's just about people in disguise. Her vocals seem to really shine on this one.

4. My Immortal- I like this song, it's just that now I'm so sick of it. I loved this song. But if you like this song, don't listen to mainstream radio for a while, they are always playing this.

5. Haunted- The beginning of this song is creepy, it reminds me of being in a cemetary. It's a very good song. I love how, in Amy Lee's vocals, there is a higher pitched voice and then Amy's regular singing voiced, meshed together. It happenws in lots of the songs, but in this song it came to my attention more.

6. Tourniquet- This song is the one that makes me cry. There is a sound of hopelessness in Amy's voice, she is almost like, 'I should cry for help, but I know that nobody will come to my aid'.

7. Imaginary- This song is so good. This song is definately an anthem for dperessed people. I know lots of these songs have the sounds to be depresed people songs, but this has the lyrics "I lie inside myself for hours, and watch my purple sky fly over me."

8. Taking Over Me- This song is interesting. You think the song will be a slow one, as there is a piano solo at first. But then guitars kick in and this song turns into a rock song, that is, in a way, a bit "mellower" then the other ones.

9. Hello- This is the only other slow song on 'Fallen' (the other one being My Immortal). If you ask me this song is a lot better then My Immortal. It's a lot slower, never really changes pace, and it's just a sad s9ong all over, maybe something you'd play if a friend died.

10. My Last Breath- You knew the album would pick up the pace again, right? This song reminds me a bit of ' Taking Over Me' although it has a completely different sound. Very good, but again, it sounds like the song was dulled.

11. Whisper- An astonishing close, and rather lengthy (5:27) but it's well worth a listen. The words at the end of the song are weird, but they can be found at A-Z lyrics.com. I think that they did a good job on this one.

All in all, I think that evanescence will probably not top this album with this next release. Of course, I said it about Avril Laivgne, and looked what happened! I say that Amy Lee has a great voice, and I absolutely love the lyrics and the guitar and the vocal arrangement. I also love how they got a chorus to perform! My only grudge is that Ben Moody left. I know, I know. But he and Amy Lee were the main founders of the band! I guess we'll survive. Anyway, if you like rock or gothic sounding music I would suggest listening to thid album. And if you didn't like the singles from the radio, then maybe you shouldn't buy this album, as most of the songs on the ablum, although not sounding alike, have the same feel.
