The "band" was mainly the collaboration of two people, full throated vocalist Amy Lee and guitarist Ben Moody. Together they created an album of epic sounding metal with slight lean towards progressive rock. This album is not all that different from similar bands like Lacuna Coil, Nightwish, or Stream Of Passion, but for some reason this album struck a note with the general public where the others continue to toil in relative obscurity. The element that really separates this band from the pack is Amy Lee's voice. She has a tremendous set of pipes that conveys power and emotion far beyond many of her peers. Some of the lyrics are a bit clichéd, but for the most part they work well with Lee's vocalizations and Moody's music to create a sonic blast that struck a chord with a lot of people. Two huge hits came from this disc the leadoff single "Bring Me To Life" which is actually quite different from the rest of the album, and the brooding ballad "My Immortal" There are actually two versions of "My Immortal" included here, the original album version and the single version with it's rocked up finale. I actually like the single version of the song better, which is unusual for me. The rest of the album is all strong with mostly dark lyrics and power chord riffs. Highlights include, "Going Under", "Haunted", "Tourniquet" (which actually has a Christian theme to it) and "My Last Breath". Actually I think every song on the disc is strong. This is one commercially successful album that I actually think deserved the sales figures that it reached. If you like melodic metal with a touch of prog rock and Goth and outstanding female vocals, this album is definitely worth checking out. |
