Free Music Notes for The Open DoorFree Music Review: An experiment gone right! Hit: 5 Stars
You guys have to be prepared with this album. I know a lot of Evanescence fans can't wait to purchase this cd, rip it open and let your ears pick up the blissful paradise that is Evanescence. Heck, I expected that too. It didn't happen though. Some first thoughts might be that there are not too many mainstream songs on this album. Some of these songs you might even hate on first listen. Being a huge fan of all of their previous work (Before Fallen as well), I was severely dissapointed in this album. But being the Evanescence fan that I am. I gave it a second chance, and then a third. Still didn't help. But suddenly I would start humming certain verses in my head randomly during the day. And then I realized that I got caught in the magic of this album.
This album is no way near as catchy and glammed up as Fallen. However it doesn't take a complete turn around from the album. Which is very smart of Amy to do. She gave us the stuff we were looking for (like "Weight Of The World", and "Lithium"), and then she finally got the chance to do stuff that she wanted to do (like "Lose Control" and "Good Enough"). This album is like an under rated treasure. You have to appreciate what's inside. The more you listen to this album and understand what it's about, the more you will crave it and get addicted to it, and you will just be washed away by this honest to god MASTERPIECE. Fact being that every song is not radio material, but once you look beyond that you will realize that each song was very well written and each song can stand on it's own. The more I listen to this album, the more infatuated I become with it. Its so good that it gives me chills. (The good kind)
Free Music Review: Excellent Hit: 5 Stars
This album came out on Oct. 3 and I went to the Toronto concert on Oct. 5. In the time between, I listened to the album constantly so that I would know the songs by the time I went to the club concert. All 13 tracks are excellent, with my particular favourites being Lithium, Snow White Queen and Sweet Sacrifice. Amy Lee explains the new songs at [...]. Initially, I found the music a bit odd, but once I was familiar with the songs, they really grew on me. Once I listened to The Open Door at home, on a really good sound system, I was hooked. Unlike many other artists, Evanescence's music is full of strings, vocals, choirs, guitars and lots of fabulous background music. Because of this, the better the sound system, the more the quality of their music comes out. The concert was excellent, Amy Lee was amazing and now when I listen to the album I remember the lights and band at the concert. I understand that Fallen was written by Amy Lee and Ben Moody, and they split up because Ben Moody wanted to do more commercial songs (he went to work with Christina Aguilera) and Amy Lee wanted to experiment more with the metal/strings goth metal sound. This album is not as immediately catchy as Fallen, perhaps because it is not as commercial. However, I like this album even more because the sound is more even and some of the choruses are very haunting (Weight of the World, Snow White Queen). I would highly recommend it because it's one of those rare albums that improves with each hearing - the more you listen to it, the more addictive it becomes as the words, music and instruments draw you in.
Free Music Review: I love this CD Hit: 5 Stars
I was thrilled when I heard Evanescence would soon have another CD out. After it came out (and I still hadn't bought it yet), I was vastly disappointed to hear a lot of negative comments about the CD. I was going to wait until Amazon put up the 30 sec clips for the songs like they usually do, but then I found them somewhere else. And from what I heard, I couldn't figure out why everyone was disappointed with the CD
So, I went out and bought it, because I love Evanescence. The first time I listened to it, there were a few songs that caught my fancy, but I found myself wanting to side with those who didn't like it that much. Then I decided that I was probably letting other people's reviews influence what I thought. I listened to it again, and I definitely liked all the songs. As with all CDs, I favored several songs more than others, but I generally loved the whole CD.
My advice to someone who isn't sure if they want to spend the money on "The Open Door:" Find those 30 second preview clips on the songs and see if you generally like them (I know it's hard to form an opinion from 30 seconds). And don't think that everyone else's opinion must be right; although, I'm glad that I began to see a lot of other reviewers saying they enjoyed "The Open Door," too. I think this CD is worth the money, and I know I'll enjoy listening to it over and over again. Amy Lee's vocals are superb, as usual, and the music has a haunting current in it. Overall, I think it's pretty much on the same level as "Fallen" but a little better than "Origin."
Free Music Review: Not as good ad Fallen but still excellent Hit: 5 Stars
Ben Moody must have been a huge asset to the band because I loved every single track from Fallen yet there were 2 songs from this album that got under my skin and a few others I could really have lived without. Well obviously Moody was an asset to SOMEONE since he has moved on to help another star rise to new heights with his talent (Kelly Clarkson: Because Of You). He also helped Avril Lavigne w/one of her songs which was just OK. Both band & man are successful & kudos to even more success to each of them!
The Open Door is still great so by all means so give it a chance. There aren't enough words to describe the beauty of Amy Lee's voice. As a soprano myself I was quite impressed with the high notes she hit both in as backround chants (ex:track 3) & in the melodies (ex: track 1) because you don't usually hear those kinds of notes unless you're listening to opera or Celtic music or something along those lines.
The songs have similar dark, deep & haunting overtones as Fallen. Both the fast & slow tracks showcase Amy Lee's HUGE vocal talent. It just shines even more in the slow ones. Don't miss Track 4: Lithium. Although I can't relate to the USE of drugs as in the song itself it is still very, very deep. And it's not like you have to be in a drug or alcohol induced blur to feel the pain she does when singing this song anyway. In my younger days I listened to music as therapy for a heartbreak and this one would have fulfilled that category. Even WITHOUT a heartbreak it's still a part of my daily music-listening playlist.
Free Music Review: Happy Halloween from Evanescence Hit: 5 Stars
The latest CD from Evanescence takes a different turn from their last release. While their record-label debut 'Fallen' consisted of catchy, mainstream rock beats geared towards pop/rock radio, 'The Open Door' changes things up a bit, incorporating new sounds into their music.
'The Open Door' takes a turn for the darker side. While very dark, the album does not quite fall into 'goth-rock' category, mainly because of the absence of screechy vocals and explicit lyrics. Amy Lee's vocals help boost the album and make it more accessable to the mainstream audience.
The songs range from hot rock numbers with heavy beats, opener "Sweet Sacrifice" and radio hit "Call Me when You're Sober" to piano ballad-ish tunes (i.e. "Lithium," "Like You") to darker rock numbers ("Lose Control," "Weight of the World") The choir on "Lacrymosa" and the eerie vocals on "Cloud Nine" make them perfect for any ghost movie soundtrack, while the catchiest tune on the album "Snow White Queen" has 'hit' written all over it.
Perhaps, the most unique and credible number is the close-er "Good Enough." The album takes a turn for the lighter side with this beautiful piano ballad. Amy Lee's vocals sound almost soulful on this, and this tune is completely different than anything they've ever done before. This shows that Evanescence has what it takes to last in the long run.
Overall, a very good album and an excellent choice to pull out for Halloween!!
