Free Music Review: Here Is The Punch Line...

Saudades de Rock is a great album. I bought the album the day that it came out and I was not dissapointed, except that I thought that the album was a bit dated. So after a few weeks of listening to this album I changed my perception that the album isn't neccesarily dated, but the fact is that Extreme has their own style and they are not going to change that no matter what decade. Why should they change their style? They have managed to be unique and that in itself should be timeless. There are some slow songs that have that modern coldplayish feel to it, which are refreshing but they remain in Extreme form. The album is a melting pot of influences that remind me of Queen, Led Zep, Beck etc. Now most of you reading this already know the quality work that Extreme has produced in the past, but what makes Saudades de Rock different is that I believe you will hear Extreme in their top form. That's right. Extreme is better than ever if we are comparing them to a decade ago. First of all the songwriting deserve utmost attention. Clever words and melodies have become more stronger in this album. It has a bit of country, punk, alternative, and even art rockish at some point. These different kind of styles makes the album not dull to listen to. Ofcourse the lyrics has the typical the Cherone cynicism, but his voice is amazing.
Gary Cherone's voice is put to the limit on this album. Some of these songs are sung very high in full voice compared to some of their previous albums. It has a slight wear and tear rasp but it adds to the whole rock vibe. Nuno has also shown signs of growth.
What makes Nuno different in this album is that his solos are very tasteful and sophisticated. Some solos are simple but focuses on being more melodic, some have that expected Brian May epic quality, and some are just Nuno shredding unapoligetically because he deserves to show the Emo generation that he is the real Guitar Hero! Not to mention that the riffs are great. I always have thought that Nuno is underated as a guitarist, songwriter, producer, but especially as as a riff maker on guitar. In my opinion up to par with Jimmy Page, but that is a whole another dsicussion. The bass lines done by Pat are locked with Nuno's guitar intricate rhythmns and are a study by it self for bass players The drummer(new member) has methodic solid grooves which is expected for the funk that is injected in Extreme. Saudades de Rock is a 5 star Extreme album. They exceeded my expectation when they said they would reunite. This is not a band that is hanging on their medals of yesterday, and the evidence is in Saudades de Rock!

Extreme is a US Rock band that achieved popularity in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Some of Extreme's influences, Queen and Van Halen (the latter of which Gary Cherone would eventually join and later leave), are readily apparent from their music's multi-part vocal harmonies and electric guitar tone and instrumental techniques. The band lends the listener a sound that blends the genre of glam metal with the shredding guitar work of thrash metal. Being asked about their style, Extreme categorized their music as 'Funky Metal'. Extreme has released four studio albums, two EPs (in Japan) and two compilations since its formation. The band was one of the most successful of those from the early 1990s, selling over 10 million albums worldwide. Extreme rose to fame with its 1990 release Pornograffitti, which peaked at #10 on the Billboard 200.
