Free Music Review: Even better in retrospect and by candle light.

My initial reactions to this album were somewhat similar to the more negative reviews that have appeared here. I was captivated by the title song and "One More Chance," which sounds rather like Grace Slick with Jefferson Airplane or maybe J. Starship, renewing the comparisons between the bands (as when Fairport had been called the British J.A., but they were comparing the groups featuring Signe Anderson and Judy Dyble, before the more famous women joined on the respective second LPs). The rest of the album seemed disappointing, compared with _Liege & Lief_ or _What We Did_. And given the push (I think I actually saw a billboard for this album at the time, in Minneapolis), it didn't seem to live up to the hype. A bit later, I realized that I was haunted by "White Dress" and I'd find "Stranger To Himself" running through my mind. I lent it to a friend, and he returned it, apparently unimpressed with Sandy's songs (!!?) but he was humming "Restless." (It took a long time till I realized how fabulous a singer Trevor Lucas was). Gradually, over the years, this has come to be a favorite album, it kind of sneaks up on you. Maybe it could have been better produced, I don't know, but the album that Glyn Johns produced has turned out to have an enduring lustre. The cover kind of invokes the first LP cover, but somehow brings the band all together, instead of spreading them out as individuals over both sides of the cover. I think the candlelight suggested in this art, with the band together around Sandy as focal point, is almost a metaphor for the sound.
