Free Music Notes for Album of the YearFree Music Review: Album Of The Ear. Hit: 4 Stars
This is a tiny bit dissapointing, but only because it came from the same band who brought us Angeldust (if you read my review on that album, mentally change that 4 to a 5 by the way). Although we still manage to get a little bit of r and b, trip hop, and Mr. Bungle style circus-metal, the genre hopping has been nipped in the bud, which may be a positive thing for you if you prefer their more commercial material, but for me it was just a bit of a letdown. Nonetheless, on the whole this is still a pretty solid set of slightly progressive alt-metal (the "funk" aspect of the band having been gradually toned down over the years), and while Mike Patton doesn't really get a chance to show his full vocal range here, he does very well, and the keyboards that were mostly missing on the previous album King For A Day... make a welcome return. Key tracks include the singles "Last Cup Of Sorrow" and "Ashes To Ashes", the almost trip-hop "Stripsearch", and the oddly beautiful "Helpless". I would definitely get either The Real Thing or Angeldust first, but this isn't a bad purchase at all.
Free Music Review: Serious fun Hit: 4 Stars
Faith No More was probably the most ambitious, and, without doubt, THE most innovative, group of it's time. Mike Patton is undeniably the most talented rock vocalist, and as musicians in general they were majestic indeed. While The Real Thing featured poppy and fresh funk-based hard rock, reminding me of Hawaiji or somesuch place, Angel Dust being THE one ( reminding me of North Pole etc.) and King For A Day... showing off the multitalented and versatile group of professionals (London / Chicago), this piece of music seems somehow a little serious. Sure, it is a very, very good piece of music, offering better production compared to previous album. There are some real classics here, such as Helpless, Collision, Last Cup Of Sorrow and Ashes To Ashes. But somehow there are signs from the forthcoming breakup, music being serious. Even Mike Patton, the nuttball sounds little unenthusiastic here and there. Still, a very, very high quality music release (most of the time, at least). Try it, YOU'll love it!
Free Music Review: Faith No More's Best Work Hit: 4 Stars
4 and 1/2 stars....I knew these guys could do it! When I first heard 'Epic' from their 1989 album "The Real Thing", I knew this band was going to be big. But their following release "Angel Dust" proved a bit lacking for me. I liked some of it, but felt that the band was far from realizing their potential. With "Album of the Year" FNM have released a solid hard rock disc loaded with great hooks, melancholy minors, and thick bombast. "Head-On Collision", "Last Cup of Sorrow", "Stripsearch", "Ashes to Ashes" (the standout on the album), and "Pristina" (a beauty!) are top notch. They make up for one or two other tracks that are good but not great. By the time this disc was released, many people (including myself) had written off FNM as early 90's has-beens. That is unfortunate because this disc is far superior to the garbage being released by so many other bands these days....
Free Music Review: Shouldn't be Overlooked Hit: 4 Stars
As the last album in a stellar career,"Album Of The Year" certainly does justice to the prior out-put,even if it doesn't break any new ground.Always a very restless, ornery band,Faith No More made a name for itself by always springing surprises and always coming up with unexpected combinations musically. One thing it never did was repeat itself, but on this record,a certain sameyness creeps into the songs, making it the first less-than-essential album in thier repotoire. However, certain standout tracks redeem it."Stripsearch" despite it's title,is actually a slinky soul ballad(sort of),and "Collision" recalls the epic intensity of "Angel Dust".My personal fave is "Last Cup Of Sorrow" with a killer riff, and featuring one of the coolest videos ever made, starring Jennifer Jason Liegh,of all people. This proved that, despite the fact that this was sadly thier swan song,Faith No More still had a few surprises up thier sleeves.
Free Music Review: Faith no more, amazing Hit: 4 Stars
In My Eyes, ever since Patton Joined Faith no More, they can do no wrong. While this being my least favorite album by them, it is the LEAST BEST, meaning that it is all amazing, but it isn't as good as angel dust or The Real Thing.
This being the Last Faith No More album really comes with alot of emotional baggage. The singing is amazing and ballads fill this album to the brinks. Get this and you'll understand WHY everyone likes faith no more. Pick up Mr Bungle while you're at it.
