Free Music Notes for From Under the Cork TreeFree Music Review: Woah Hit: 5 Stars
This album was just one of the best things I've heard in the past year. It's really awesome. And what makes it even more interesting is in some songs they kinda stay true to their metal roots. Yes OMFG each member of Fall Out Boy used to be in a metal band before actually starting Fall Out Boy. But wow it was amazing listening to these guys. Even though it kinda saddens me that they're played on MTV and now everyone loves them because they used to be "my band" (not really MY BAND but..yeah) they used to be that ONE BAND I would listen to to feel like an individual, and a non-comformist but now that they're played on MTV it just takes away all the fun, the fun of knowing something someone else doesn't But I'm sure as hell happy for them ^_^ either way
1. Our Lawyers Made Us change the Name of This Song So We Wouldn't Get Sued- 10/10-the guitar parts on this song are amazing and the intro is fantastical with the "roaring" guitars. The Chorus is just amazing and obviously Pete(Wentz; lyricist and bassist) put a lot of thought into these lyrics. And I find the name interesting...because they really did have to change the name so they would get sued o_O
"We're only liars but we're the best, we're only good for the latest trends"
2. "Of all the Gin Joints in the World"- 9/10-Once again wonderful guitar parts, and I love the vocals on this one. The lyrics on all of these songs are super-dee-dooper. But these ones really stand out to me.The only reason I give it a 9 out of 10 is because it's not one of the best on the album. Still, obviously, wonderful but not the best.
"I've got headaches and backaches but they couldn't touch you"
3. "Dance, Dance"- 10/10-The one thing that REALLY stood out to me on this one was the sound of the bass guitar during the first 12 seconds of the song. It's so wonderful and creative and just makes me want to smile. And the whole beat and sound of the song just really make you want to dance(dance..haha corny me ^_^). It's one of the up-beat songs but at the same time it has a sort of darkness to it...probably due to the really clear sounding bassline to it, which will probably be the best bassline ever written in an emo/pop-punk song other than the one in Green Day's "Longview"
"She said she's no good with words but I'm worse, barely stuttered out a "Joke of a Romance" or just stuck to my tongue"
4. "Sugar We're Goin Down"- 8/10 Really, in my opinion one of the worst songs on the album. Patrick's (Stump, vox and guitar)singing is barely understandable but still in a very good beat. It's really poppy and probably all of you hvae heard it already. But it has very good song composition if you ask me. But still...not the best song on the album.
"We're going down, down in an earlier round (take aim at myself), and sugar, we're going down swinging (take back what you said) I'll be you're number one with a bullet (take aim at myself) a Loaded God complex cock it and pull it (take back what you said)"
5. "Nobody Puts Baby in the Corner"-8/20- This is a really up-beat song, and the lyrics are a bit hard to understand. But all-in-all I really liked it. It's really different from anything else I've ever heard. Which is good because if everything sounded the same the music industry would just be boring. I know I'm kinda getting off topic but...everyone complains about each song sounding the same but yet...then they go tell us to listen to Metal, or "real" punk. I really don't get that. Because if we wanted to listen to a certain type of music and just...make our entire CD collection made up of ONE type of music...where's the variety in that? just keeping our focus on one type of music is just like buying a CD with songs that all sound the same. But...in this CDs case I must say...all of the songs sound unique and different.
"So, wear me like a locket around your throat I'll weigh you down and I'll watch you choke, you look so good in blue"
6. "I've Got a Dark Alley And a Bad Idea, That Says You Should Shut Your Mouth(Summer Song)"-8/10-Not the best but the only thing that needs improvement at all in this song are the vocals. The vocals aren't of my taste personally but none of the songs on this album are horrible...not at all. I just think that the vocals could be improved. Obviously, a deep tone of singing really isn't Patrick's strong suit...so he should exactly sing low...which he did in this song. The vocals are good just not GREAT. The beginning also makes me think of the Beatles for some reason...hmm...
"I am hopelessly hopeful, you're just hopeless enough, but we never had it at all"
7. "7 Minutes in Heaven (Atavan Halen)"-12/10- this is absolutely my favorite song on the album. The only bad thing about it...is that it's too short! I wish this song would go on forever. The guitar parts are absolutely wonderful, the lyrics are wonderful, the beat of the song is WONDERFUL, the drums are wonderful, the harmonies are WONDERFUL. This song is WONDERFUL. There's this one part in the song where Patrick has a WONDERFUL vocal solo, where all you can hear during the solo is his voice and a really quiet guitar in the background with a bit of cymbal from the drummer, it's absolutely WONDERFUL. I really at a loss of words with this one. It's just...WONDERFUL (I know this is getting on your nerves ^_^). And seriously...the guitar parts have the best beat and sound ever, that is, for emo/pop-punk songs, in my own personal opinion that no one should be offended by in anyway.
"I'll be stuck fixated on one star, when the world is crashing down"
8. "Sophmore Slump or Comeback of the Year"-10/10- COMEBACK OF THE MOTHER F***ING YEAR! Once AGAIN, the guitars are WONDERFUL (I'm just doing this to make fun of myself now). The lyrics to the song really explain how I feel about these guys it's super ^_^. Now, there are a few questions asked in this song. But after the release of this album...I believe they have been answered (yes? no? maybe so? do you know?) All I really know is that...this song is super and the lyrics are song of the best. Pete has inspired many a AIM buddy icon with his lyrics.
"The best part of "Believe" is the "Lie" I hope you sing along and you steal a line"
9."Champagne for my Real Friends, a Real Pain for my Sham Friends"-10/10- The beginning of this song makes me think that they started using electronic keyboards or synthesizers or something but it was fun to listen to and to know that...their music is..."diverse" but really the sounds at the beginning were clearly made by guitars (oh, the powers of guitars).A lot of these songs make you think there was a lot of influence in the band when they were making this record. The song is really great. And well, it has good song composition again.
"You are a getaway car-a rush of blood to the head, but me, I'm just the covers on top of your bed"
10."I Slept With Someone From Fall Out Boy and All I got was This Stupid Song Written About Me"-10/10- Okay, this song is super. It's the only song on the album without (not including the name of the song) any sexual innuendo (shock, shock). This song also includes a growl-fest from Pete and Chad Gilbert from New Found Glory. It's really a sound to hear. It's amazing how easily they go from "oh-I'm-poppy-and-listen-to-these-up-beat-guitars" to "growl-growl-grr-grr" in this song. Also, this song leads directly into the next song "A Little Less Sixteen Candles and a little more touch me"
"Someone old, No one New, Feeling borrowed, always blue, someone old, no one new, allways borrowed, always you"
11."A Little Less "Sixteen Candles" a Little More Touch Me"-10/10- This song sounds like and ode to the popular girl you wanted to dance with at the dance but snubbed you for the cute guy that played football. It's a cute song. And it kinda sounds like something The Starting Line would do. I really like it.The vocals go really well with the guitar parts that go really well with the drum parts (played by Andy Hurley, who is also the road manager for Evanescence...you know that one band with that one girl who were played a lot that you have in your CD player on loop?).
"I don't blame you for being you, but you can't blame me for hating it, so say, what are you waiting for? Kiss her, kiss her, I set my clocks early 'cause you know I'm always late."
12."Get Busy Living or Get Busy Dying (Do your Part to save the Scene and Stop going to Shows)"-10/10- This song is really dark and filed with hatered...towards someone. But all the same it's just super. The beat and vibe are really imaginative and unique. It makes you want to just kick someone or black-mail someone you used to love but now hate. it's definately a song that stands out from everything else on the album. Other than that...there's nothing else I can say about this song. It does have a little speech by Pete right at the end of the song.
"This has been said so many times and I'm not sure if it matters, but it must be said again that all us boys are just screaming into microphones from attention because we're just so bored." "From Day one I thought about getting out but not forgetting about, how all my worst fears are letting out, he said why put a new address on the same old loneliness, when breathing just passes the time until we all just get old and die,now talking is just a waste of breath and living is just a waste of death, and why put a new adress on the same old lonliness, and this is you and me and me and you until we have nothing left!"
13. "XO"-9/10- I find it crazy how short this title is compared to al of the other song titles. But...it's short, sweet, simple, flexible. AND I LOVE IT ^_^. It's deifinatley a unique song. It starts out a bit slow but it gets a lot faster. It's filled with suggestive lyrics that kinda feels a little dark at times but it doesn't, at all, take away from the genius of the lyrics.
"To the "love" I left my conscience pressed , throught the keyhole I watched you dress, kiss and tell, (loose lips sink ships)"
Woah that took a long time. for me to type up and for you to read...if you read it o_O.

From Under the Cork Tree PosterJapanese version of 2005 album includes 1 bonus track TBA. Island. The cleverness of Fall Out Boy's lyrical content is immediately evident by looking at the song titles on their sophomore disc, From Under the Cork Tree. "A Little Less 'Sixteen Candles,' a Little More 'Touch Me,'" "I Slept with Someone in Fall Out Boy and All I Got Was This Stupid Song Written About Me" and "Sophomore Slump or Comeback of the Year" are but a small taste of the group's acerbic attitude. After FOB's indie debut hit the underground charts, the group's sudden indie-style success made for a fast growth spurt. Their appeal is obvious, from frontman Patrick Stump's Killer-esque pipes (especially evidenced in the disc-closing "XO") to their very melodic teen-angst anthems. While much of the disc operates at usual punk-pop speed, the highlight comes from a slower, emotion-laden cut called "I've Got a Dark Alley and a Bad Idea That Says You Should Shut Your Mouth." This song of living in the public while working through private pain is a beautiful, multilayered number that stays with you long after the album is over. --Denise Sheppard
