Free Music Review: Better Than The Last.

After the phenomenal success of his last c.d.,Fat Boy Slim has come back with a riveting c.d.,which embraces all aspects of `dance' music. The title of `Halfway Beyween The Gutter And The Stars' is particularly apt.Norman Cook has stated in recent interviews that superstardom has rested rather uneasily on his shoulders.This c.d. probably won't sell as many as "You've Come A Long ....",but in my opinion it is a far better c.d.Gone are the endless tunes which were on every T.V. advert,instead we have a darker,more grown up c.d. This c.d. also differs from the last one in the way he uses guest vocalists such as Macy Gray,Ashley Slater and 70's funk legend Bootsy Collins. The first song is a brief gospel tinged,soulful mood setter.The 2nd song `Star 69' is a serious techno belter of a tune,with a rather rude repeated line.Song 3-the first single `Bird Of Prey' uses a Jim Morrison sample and is an excellent trance influenced track.Track 4 featuring Macy Gray(who's 2 vocal contributions are as good as anything on her own solo c.d.) is a real funky affair.4 songs in and you see a total absence of the `Big Beat' style which Fat Boy Slim is famous for. Cook enjoys a close friendship with the `Chemical Brothers'.He has stated that they've been a big influence on him.Interestingly he also seemed to infer that Moby's c.d. has had no influence on him what so ever-especially as many people have found similarities (not in my opinion!) between this c.d. and `Play'.Any way track 5 `Ya Mama' is an amazing "Chem" style track.It is also one of the c.d.'s highlights.Mad Flava is as close to the last c.d. as this one gets-it's just a real fun song.'Weapons Of Choice' with Bootsy Collins is just amazing-picture 70's style(Huggy Bear) funk,the best toe tapping rhythmical backdrop and great distorted vocals.Track 9-`Drop The Hate' starts off with an awe-embracing eulogy of love to all creeds and then becomes entwined in a heavy techno beat.Maybe it is in it's use of `gospel' that has people rushing off to give moby similarities.In my opinion this is quite preposterous as the music is vastly different.'Gospel' is very evident on the next Macy Gray guested song.With a mixture of gospel piano and Hare Krishna rhythms and chants,it soon breaks into some familiar `Big Beat'.Macy's vocals are absolutely excellent!The final track is an 11 minute plus monster that concludes this c.d. in an awesome climax. One of the best of a very good crop of dance c.d.'s this year.This c.d. just goes to show that this particular musical genre is evolving into contemporary music's most interesting category right now.And Fat Boy Slim is leading the way!
