Free Music Review: Different versions, Different thoughts

There are several versions of the Fiddler on the Roof album. First is to decide whether you want the London Cast album, the Broadway Cast album, or the movie soundtrack. There are several versions of each so make sure you buy the one you want. For the Broadway Cast album, with Zero Mostel playing the role of Tevye, there are several choices.
The first is the original album, released on LP originally in 1964 and later reproduced on a rather poor quality CD. This was limited by the space available on the LP and therefore was missing Wedding Dance and The Rumor. Finally, 22 years later, RCA released a CD that included these two tracks. There was no remastering and the 12 tracks off the original album sounded identical. Both of these albums remain available, used, for typically low cost. In 2003, a new iteration of the album was released, finally remastered specifically for CD. With a good sound system for playback, there's really no comparison. The remastered "Deluxe Edition" sounds wonderful - it's now easy to distinguish each individual's voice in the many songs sung simultaneously by multiple cast members. The voices are much more crisp and the high end has been improved, dramatically in some cases. As an added bonus, there are six additional tracks including the original "When Messiah Comes," a song that was removed from the show before it was presented on Broadway. While several of these tracks are interviews that you'll listen to only once, the added music is both interesting and entertaining.
If this is one of your favorite albums, the new Deluxe Edition is worth purchasing. Of note, rather than being contained in a jewel case, the CD and liner notes are contained within a cardboard binder - it's the same size as a jewel case and will fit perfectly among your CD's, so no matter. If you've always focused on the movie and its soundtrack, there are quite a few differences, both in lyric and delivery, particularly between Topol and Mostel. Both have their own style and approach to the role, detailed fully elsewhere. Overall, this is one of the great Broadway cast albums.
