Free Music Review: Timeless prolonged 'flicker of LIGHT' that forms 'ALBU' all.
Hit: 5 Stars

There's always been a connective 'string' that 'binds and ties' Finn albums 'together' since they graced musical 'shores' in the 1970s and onwards/towards (beyond?) the 'rough seas' of the new Millennium. Some common denominator in the album's tracklisting that just flows, from song to song, end lyric to starting lyric, from one album to the next. Hence the sophomore Finn Brothers album Everyone Is Here is an album greater than the sum of it's parts - a package meant and destined to be listen on as one whole, in one sitting: ('Moving Over') and over and again...
Tim Finn had a lesser and tentative contribution to the sound of the eponymous Finn Brothers album 'Way Back Down' in 1995. For the record Tim's prescence here is felt more than ever. Neil Finn solo tends to be lyrically shy, sublime, and indirect. With brother Tim he is the opposite: direct, braver and a more controversial voice. If the Catholic Church dosen't 'SHIVER' at the thought: '...God is a woman...' not a two thirds man (ala Holy Trinity 1-Father 2-Son 3-Holy Ghost), then I don't know what will. Further there are many other recurring bi-polar John Lennon spiritual/ambivalent agnostic themes throughout the album:
'...I'm coming around today, to gather in the pieces, give into the MYSTERY...' Anything Can Happen
'...We've learnt to take ABUSE, from DEVILS we don't KNOW...' Nothing Wrong With You
'...On a SUNDAY morning: my home town is feeling strange to me.
In the stadium: DARK forces are gathering'... Homesick
'...The ANGEL in the detail soon arrives, spreading her wings over every memory, keeping all our HOPES alive...'
Disembodied Voices
Best of all would have to be the honest, heartfelt and touching lyrical THEME of the brother's unique relationship - you know the kinda love made sappy, lame and flowery famous by The Bee Gees. Dare I say it emotionally/musically the Finn's have sophisticatedly surpassed these top league, best selling rock icons in all areas.
In a nutshell there is a sense of optimism and LIGHT throughout this album, not found as much throughout previous Finn albums, of which tend to brood with DARK melancholy. Significantly what fans truly love about them is they present intelligent 'other side' of the lyric/philsopophical debate on all heavy existential life themes...as deFINitively and conclusively shown when Neil reflects, pleads and communicates to all his fans ('...wherever there is comfort there is pain...'), in the closing track:
'...My wish for you. An end to your sorrow. And if this comes true. You'll wake up tomorrow: ALONE...'
And then Tim complimentary chimes in: '...this 'Gentle Hum'. Coming up from before. Find another meaning inside. this Gentle Hum. Giving it back to me. Find another meaning in your life...'
Here here, yes INDEED, this magnificently produced and multi layered/faceted album is a timeless and prolonged 'flicker of LIGHT' ~ shining in the DARK of the fading musical industry ~

Everyone Is Here Poster

That day: Tim and Neil Finn flew in from New Zealand to record a new album.

Friends and allies were called in to help as the album grew from Piha Beach to London and Los Angeles. In the engine room there's Matt Chamberlain (David Bowie/Macy Gray) on drums and Sebastian Steinberg (Soul Coughing) on bass; Jon Brion (Grant Lee Phillips/Fiona Apple/Badly Drawn Boy) appears on guitars, keyboards and face scratching.

Mitchell Froom (Crowded House/Phantom Planet) lent his production skills. Bob Clearmountain was called in to mix, and it was the first time the Finns, Froom and Clearmountain had been in a room together since Woodface. At the heart of the project are these 12 new songs, as fine as anything the brothers have written.

"Mitchell Froom was someone we'd spoken about in terms of keyboards; maybe getting him to play on a couple of things," Tim says. "We saw him soon after we came to LA. We played him material and I'll never forget it. In the space of a few hours he gave very precise opinions on every song. He became a producer on the project, but it was more like a friend helping out two other friends, with great authority and intuition. He knows us both so well. He's worked with both of us individually and together. He's creates this great level space."

Everyone Is Here offers an intense emotional journey.

"It involves a recurrence of ideas," Tim explains of the magic. "It's about embracing the simple classic elements that you've always loved."

Ever since the demise of New Zealand popsmiths Crowded House back in the late '90s, brothers Neil and Tim Finn have been content to plough their furrow far from pop's bustling farmstead. Everyone Is Here, the pair's second full-lengther, lacks the full production and grand, Beatlesesque melodic ambitions that saw songs like "Weather With You" and "Fall At Your Feet" become transatlantic radio hits--but it replaces such scope with a smudged, intimate acoustic style that suits Neil and Tim's songwriting talents almost as neatly. The album's finest moments are mostly placed towards the top end: "Luckiest Man Alive" is the sort of conscious rock gospel that Stereophonics' Kelly Jones would kill to be able to write, while "Anything Can Happen"--a billowing, U2-style epic of scintillating guitar and cavernous drum-crashes is seemingly placed to prove that not all is trad chez Finn. As an album, it probably won't spawn any MTV-hogging video classics--certainly, that was never the intention--but Finn fans in search of a mellow listen should find Everyone Is Here hits all the right buttons. --Louis Pattison
