Free Music Review: Fischerspooner vs. The Postal Service (and a short review)

I didn't intend to write a review for this album. But there seems to be a definite tone of 'we are superior' by those who worship The Postal Service and are abhored by 'blasphemous' statements that Fischerspooner could be in fact as good or better. (gasp) The definate difference between Fischerspooner and The Postal Service is definatley the basslines and beats. Fischerspooner has far more 'danceable' grooves, while The Postal Service is more chilled out electronica. Personally, I enjoy Sasha's version of chilled out electronica.
And now to the review:
I happen to love this album, as illustrated by the 5 star rating. This is simply some infectious electronic pop music that I think any fan of electronica would definately enjoy.
The difference between 'Odyssey' and '#1' is rather distinct in my opinion. #1 was definately designed to be a far more club-ready mix of progressive dance tracks. 'Odyssey' is almost a full departure from that musical philosphy in the sense that nearly every track has a distinct bassline and hook instead of a progressive structure. 'Odyssey' definately made better use of real instruments and classic song structure to create a much more vibrant and lively album of SONGS. One in which the lyrics and music were in compliment to one another...as opposed to the progressive blend of '#1.' Despite this, the album is unmistakibly Fischerspooner and I happen to highly enjoy both #1 and Odyssey. (You GOT to love 'Emerge') An expansion on the sound of 'Invisible' from #1 is basically the kind of thing you can expect from 'Odyssey', with the addition of some guitar and keyboard.
A Few Highlights for Me: Let Go (Single version is better), Cloud, Never Win, We Need a War, Get Confused
As for album of the year....I would definately have to put this as a contender right now.

Much has happened since 2002, when Fischerspooner released their breakout record #1. If that album?s computerized fine art was a trip back to the '80s, another time warp might be necessary to sustain any momentum for Odyssey. The dance music muse, always in motion, has backed off on the electro/new wave sound that Warren Fischer and Casey Spooner used as a platform for their experimental live shows. Upon first listen, it sounds like the duo has chosen to ignore this; if Odyssey isn?t a clone of #1, it?s at least a close relation. There are, however, crucial and clever differences. The record is much friendlier for one thing, a result of warmer sonics and an unclenched pop sense that was only hinted at previously. "Just Let Go" starts off with a familiar Human League keyboard, but right in the middle of the chorus a jagged, garage band guitar riff smears the song?s makeup. Suddenly you don?t recognize them anymore. Where?s that sexy, but vacuous pose Fischer and Spooner used to lean on? There?s no pretension in a song like "A Kick in the Teeth," with its layered and lovely vocal line. Our cheese is now served straight up. The result? Tasty. --Matthew CookeAlternative Rock Music CDs
