Free Music Notes for The Battle For Everything

Free Music Review: trying to believe
Hit: 5 Stars

Five for Fighting's John Ondrasik seems finally to have got over himself and down to the business of singing about life. The result is a splended CD called, enigmatically, 'The Battle for Everything.' It promises to endure as a mile marker in his career, to say nothing of the annals of good listening.

The album's opener, 'NYC Weather Report', fairly lilts. Ondrasik's irony seems less bent on anger venting than on description of life as a stranger, one passing through with wistful memories of places and relationships that failed but somehow cast their expectation forward into destinations that await the end of this moment in the journey. Back, yet somehow forward, to New York City.

The man can also sing a mean love song. Shades of Sting's lyricism haunt 'If God Made You':

'Hey Kid .. Your time has come to change
Though I need you more than I've needed anyone in any way tonight
Hey Kid ... I know it won't be long
The Captain's calling .. come to see you back where we belong
Something inside me is breaking
Something inside says there's somewhere better than this ...
Sunset sailing on April skies
Bloodshot fire coulds in her eyes
I can't say what I might believe
But if God made you he's in love with me'

Ondrasik places the chord transition exactly where it releases the listener's attentive energy. The man can score a song.

Then comes the high-air-play '100 Years', a wistful survey of live's brevity that conjures up Cat Stevens, John Mellencamp, and Billy Joel. Ondrasik stands up just fine in such company. It's a tune made for hearing over and over again, then once more.

'Dying' underscores Ondrasik's thickening credentials as a baladeer of lost love, though hardly with the campiness that such a description might suggest. It sounds real, not postured. Ondrasik has been criticized, of course, for the latter. This album should in part quiet that angle of criticism.

In my judgment, the balance of anger with deeper and more varied sentiments, together with Ondrasik's growth as a writer, make THE BATTLE FOR EVERYTHING his first five-star offering. One feels confident it will not be his last.

Free Music Review: Amazing Album
Hit: 5 Stars

John Ondrasik leads this CD with his piercing falsetto vocals. He constantly produces great lyrics and mixes in great piano. This CD is near flawless, and I play it quite often. Songs:

1. NYC Weather Report - (5/5) Great intro with the harmonica. Very peaceful start to the album which gets you into the mood of the rest of the album. It's an incredible song with a great chorus. Amazing start.

2. The Devil In The Wishing Well - (5/5) Again, nice chorus and great lyrics (as always). Hopeful ending.

3. If God Made You - (5/5) I would have to say that this is my favorite song on the CD. Incredible lyrics and easily the best chorus on the CD. Flawless song.

4. 100 Years - (5/5) The single on this CD, although they should've had more than just one. Encouraging message and profound lyrics. Great song.

5. Angels And Girlfriends - (5/5) More of a fun song than the last four, but still a great song. Again, a cool mixture of harmonica.

6. Dying - (5/5) Does the greatness of this CD ever end? Great lyrics along with the most passionate vocals on the album.

7. Infidel - (3/5) This is where the CD drops off a little. It's harder than all the other ones on the CD, but I just don't think his voice works very well on this one. This is the only one where his lyrics lack some as well. Not a bad song though.

8. Disneyland - (4/5) Just a fun and creative song. Fun to listen to.

9. Maybe I - (5/5) More good lyrics and great music.

10. The Taste - (4/5) When it gets to the chorus, it borderlines punk music. It was very different than the rest of the CD, but still pretty cool.

11. One More For Love - (5/5) Great song with more great lyrics.

12. Nobody - (5/5) A great song to end the CD on. Ondrasik again delivers some very passionate vocals. Easily one of the best on the CD. It recaps the CD by bringing in different parts of different songs. The last sentence leaves a very encouraging outlook.

Overall, definitely a CD you should own. This is amazing. A great performance all around.

Free Music Review: Not Bad
Hit: 5 Stars

I borrowed this album from a friend after discovering that a song constantly played in TV commercials (that song being 100 Years) was sung by this band (I always thought it to be Dave Matthews) I borrowed it and found I liked it...A lot. A few reviews on here say John Ondrasik (or whatever his name is) sounds like a Chris Martin rip-off and such, but I disagree. He's a gifted singer who sounds kind of like Dave Matthews at times but he's a good songwriter and a talented artists. If you're into mellow Coldplay like stuff though you should like this album.

1. NYC Weather Report-5/5-Good music accompanied with cheesy lyrics and a guy who sounds like Dave Matthews whining. It's a good song though.
2. The Devil in the Wishing Well-5/5-Very interesting metaphorical lyrics.
3. If God Made You-4/5-(No Comment)
4. 100 Years-5/5-He sounds a lot like Dave Matthews on this song. This is that song played in all those TV commercials. Great song.
5. Angels & Girlfriends-5/5-Great title and idea. His voice sounds slightly different on this song. This is an awesome song though.
6. Dying-4/5-(No Comment)
7. Infidel-5/5-Religious-lyrics but it's probably one of the best songs on the lyrics.
8. Disneyland-5/5-John Ondrasik seems to like disneyland quite a bit; the lyrics are pretty cool, cute song.
9. Maybe I-4/5-I'm not a big fan of whiny-it could've been-songs, but this guys voice is perfect for it.
10. The Taste-5/5-One of the best songs on the album. The most rock-ish song.
11. One More for Love-5/5-This is a cool song...
12. Nobody-3/5-My least favorite song on the album; Ondrasik virtually talks through the song, stupid...

Free Music Review: A 6 Stars Album!
Hit: 5 Stars

John Ondrasik, "I know God is in love with me" when I listened to your album. You have really done it this time. An album which I have not been able to put down once I started to listen. (And I haven't experienced anything like this for a long, long time.)

To experience the magic of John just listen to "Maybe I" and you will get the idea why I am singing praises about him. John's vocals are unique, his melodies superb and his arrangements brings you back to the good 70's style where substance (and not the number of swear words) counts.

On "Disneyland" and you can see what a musical genius can do to one of the world's most well knowned icons. John intersperse his lyrics well with the music and you feel like you are riding a musical "tea cup ride" as you listen along to this song.

"Dying" and "If God made you" might sound a tad religious but don't be misled by the titles as John does not preach but he does deliver to you some of the most articulate and impassioned tunes ever.

More good songs are lined up in this album. "The Devil in the Wishing Well" is so well orchestrated you have to appreciate this song at its best CD quality. "Nobody" and "100 years" again attest to the ability of John to swing a melody any way he likes it - and they still sound good!

This is the "Superman" we have been missing all this time and I am glad that Five for Fighting fills the void in our present musically handicapped world.

Free Music Review: Another Work of Art! A+ From a Great Band!
Hit: 5 Stars

I give this Five For Fighting CD 5 * stars * due to its excellent production. Lush strings hiding behind the acoustic guitars to create the mood of the beautifully haunting vocals.

The CD shines with the visions of the hard work that came in the creation of the CD. Flawless from start to finish. As the earlier reviews stated. John Ondrasik is the one similar to Jim Morrison making the bands music put a piece into the billboard landmark for music to influence the bands and poets to come.

There are two songs on here are destined to be hits on the charts:

1.) 11. One More For Love

Cascaded with the most beautiful piano work guaranteed to make the listener feeling the need for love and go hug someone. That is like a movie, when this is done you know your job is well done! Very romantic. ( One you will want on repeat ;)

2.) 4. 100 Years

Hauntingly beautiful melodies about the ages of the test of time that will bring visuals to the listener as they listen. Resulting in the feeling of happiness, thoughts of all special times we have shared throughout life.

The rest of the CD is pure art and should be on the top of your wanted list for great music for your collection.

Buy this CD! Let's all hope there will be a whole lot more to come this great thing <Five For Fighting>
