Free Music Review: If There Were Wars Of Love...

This music is rediculously enthralling. This is every bit as good as The Soft Bulliten (previous album) and with perhaps the most innovative sound production ever! The surround mix was done by a guy (I think he's Elliot Scheiner) who did Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody', and he says this is beyond even that, or something to that effect. Well, its about time! As Radiohead's Kid A was a quantifiable advance in tech-rock production, then so is this a mere few years later. Major props should be given to Dave Fridmann (producer of the talented Mercury Rev as well) for his absolutely amazing production. This could rightfully be described as a more upbeat, though no less sobering, relative of the aforementioned album. If you ever imagined being in the center of the universe with the groovinest, most hummably happenin' tunes, then scoop this up! With Singer/lyricist Wayne Coyne's cosmic-yet-down-to-earth vocals and melodies and arranger/multi-instrumentalist Steven Drozd's incredible, depth-of feel orchestrating, not to mention Michael Ivin's spot-on, navigational bass work, The Lips take contemporary music with them on a singularly reflective and, ultimately, transforming humanistic journey. Do a search on the actual meaning of 'In The Morning Of The Magicians' to get an idea where these guys' heads are at! The song takes its title from book of the same name, though the lyrics are not connected. Speaking of lyrics, I really appreciate Coyne's giving a damn about the human condition. He really does come across as genuinely sincere, even when singing about the meyaphorical "robots" that Yoshimi's up against. The title track definitely is an irresistable, sing-along ear worm. Conceptually, between 'Feeling Yourself Disintegrate' (from The Soft Bulletin) and 'Do You Realize' here, Wayne's point of view has actually made me stop and think about the big picture, and start changing my ways. There's much to mull over conceptually, but Coyne has a gift for putting things succinctly. Sample lyric: "Do you realize that everyone you know someday will die / And instead of saying all of your goodbyes / Let them know you realize that life goes fast...". 'All We Have Is Now' is the last vocal song and acts as a poignant, mediating exclamation point to the general themes of life's struggles heard throughout the album. Somehow, Yoshimi stays optimistically resigned. This music just breathes on. As for the surround mix, well its almost as if you've never heard music before this. There just isn't anything like this! Surround sound that you lyterally melt into...Oh, and even if you don't have surround, we are treated to TRUE 176 khz. Advanced Resolution 2 channel with HD encoding! (if you have a dvd-a player) This set even generously includes the standard cd as well. Entertaining videos/promos and 2 top notch "new" songs, Drozd's cooly drifting 'Up Above The Daily Hum'(it has an atmospheric, Brian Wilson - like chorus) and the Syd Barrett-goes-symphonic 'If I Go Mad'. Trully wondrous, forward-reaching music. Its hard to imagine being either too young or too old to appreciate Yoshimi, and that seems to me a pretty rare thought.
