Free Music Review: Queen's first film score 27 years on is years ahead of its time
Hit: 5 Stars

Queen's tenth album was the soundtrack to Flash Gordon released in December of 1980 in the UK and January of 1981 in the US.
The band were approached by producer Dino De Laurentis before going off to tour the US to provide the score to his film Flash Gordon based on the comic book hero. Also, the band decided to try what was called "a heavy metal film score" which then would be copied by AC/DC years later in Maximum Overdrive from 1986 and a few other lesser known bands.
The album was produced by guitarist Brian May and Mack and recorded in England in early 1980. Was this album good or bad, read ahead!
We kick things off with the #41 hit "Flash's Theme" (or Flash as listed on single released) and is only one of two songs that have vocals on it and composed by Brian. The only other track with vocals is the closing rocker "The Hero" which rocks and was too composed by Brian.
Brian also composed the instrumentals "Flash to the Rescue", the killer "Battle Theme", "The Wedding March" (all done on guitar), "Crash Dive on Mingo City" and "Flash's Theme Reprise".
Brian also wrote "Marriage of Dale and Ming" with drummer Roger Taylor.
Speaking of Roger, he contributed the instrumentals "In the Space Capsule", "In the Death Cell" and "Escape from the Swamp".
Lead singer Freddie Mercury contributed the instrumentals "Ming's Theme" (which is superb, all done on synthesizer), "The Ring", the rocking "Football Fight", the haunting wordless vocal on "The Kiss" and "Vultan's Theme".
Bass player John Deacon contributed the instrumentals "Execution of Flash" (with Deaky on guitar) and "Arboria".
Flash Gordon stalled at #24 but went Gold in the US. Notwithstanding sales, this soundtrack is a great film score for Queen and their best soundtrack ever!

Free Music Review: FLASH!!! Aaaaaah, Aaaaaahhh!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

Could a soundtrack be any more cool? I love this soundtrack! The movie is cool, but the sountrack ROCKS! It has so many cool sound bites from the movie, it's like listening to the movie. They picked some really good ones, too. Flash's theme starts off great, with Ming: "Klytus, I'm bored. What plaything can you offer me today?" "An obscure body in the S-K system, your majesty. The inhabitants refer to it as the planet 'Earth'..." Then the beat kicks in, and you get the build up to the legendary "FLASH!!! AAAAH-AAAAHHH!!!" You gotta love the words to that song. "Just a man with a man's courage. Nothing but a man but he can never fail. No one but the pure in heart may find the golden grail."

And man, who can forget Vultan's Theme? That is an AWESOME song! It really pumps you up. I've listened to it over and over... And speaking of pumping you up, The Hero is one INCREDIBLE song also. Man, you gotta love it!...

The CD case also includes a few good pictures of Queen, as well as some pics from the movie....

He's for everyone of us! Stand for everyone of us! He save with a mighty hand every man every woman every child he's a mighty Flash!...

Free Music Review: Pounding Drums and Screaming Guitars get to the point!
Hit: 5 Stars

Anyone who is, or ever was a fan of Queen, will love this album. The absolute over-the-top guitars and driving drum tracks of the main theme, combine to create one of the greatest rock soundtracks of all time. This album displayed the fascinating ability of Queen to skillfully make musical transitions that few, if any band, was ever able to imitate. From freeform, open-metered passages, to slow ballads, to fist-pumping hard rock, all is combined in a seamless progression characteristic of four amazing musicians. Be advised, those people with a more musically closed mind, may not appreciate this album for what it truly is. The diversity of musical styles may actually be too much for the common listener to handle. However, if you happen to be one of those rare individuals who knows quality music, regardless of its style, this album is certain to not let you down. All hail Flash Gordon!

Free Music Review: Strange objects imaged in the Imperial Vortex
Hit: 5 Stars

This album is just plain fun. It could almost be a story record for kids. The thing that gets me about this soundtrack is the absolutely intense use of drums. If you've ever seen the movie then you may be familiar with the psychedelic portrayal of outer space as swirling paint cloud formations that look like the blobular projections used in late 60s concert scenes.
"Approaching the Sea of Fire" - The drums, synths and dialogue in the Space Capsule cut are quite trippy.
"Lower them into the Swamp" - Drums again invoking primitive, tribal imagery.
"Pero's hit, I'm going in after him" - Intense drumming signals heroic rescues in the midsts of a fantastic cartoon battle...

Free Music Review: one of the first good rock movie soundtracks for the 1980's
Hit: 5 Stars

Queen was one of my first 3 rock favorites. And today are placed in my second all time favorite. This was a bit different from there usual albums. But what made Queen unique is that this album allowed them to go ahead and do the music for other movies that would follow. I mean look at Highlander. Had it not been for Queen doing the music who do you think would have been more appropriate? I think Queen set the standard for other artists for movie soundtracks. I remember a girl I knew who said if we ever got married the Wedding March is what she would have liked. I could not agree more. But as for that personal side we have not spoken in 8 years and I have no clue if she is alive.
