Free Music Notes for Fleet Foxes

Free Music Review: Great melodic first album
Hit: 5 Stars

I would probably liken this wonderful debut by Fleet Foxes to Midlake with greater instrumental skills, a better engineering mix and strength in depth, but then most of you probably have not heard of Midlake either (if you like this album, check them out on The Trials of Van Occupanther). So perhaps I have to fall back to a mix between Simon and Garfunkel for the pristine singing, the Byrds and early Jethro Tull for the musicality and the breadth of instrumentation.

Whatever you do, do not expect this album to rock. It is a mix of subtle melodic ballads, such as the lead-off Sun It Rises and the folksy Tiger Mountain Peasant Song and faster more orchestrated songs such as Ragged Wood. It will be interesting whether on their next offering after this impressive debut, the group speeds up or remains etherally slow.

Free Music Review: Great Album!
Hit: 5 Stars

Why did I wait so long to pick this one up? I mean, it's not like they lacked the usual indie world hype. Most of the reviews you'll read are pretty on, using words like earthy, rural, rustic, sweet and warm.

Upon first listening, it was clear that lead vocalist/guitarist Robin Pecknold, was heavily influenced by the Beach Boys (Brian Wilson days, of course). Upon reading the liner notes, this was confirmed by direct references to their music.

This album is good art. Not only is the cover art interesting (Bruegel painting), but the music and lyrics really create and take you into a different world. This album also seems to have a wide appeal. Most people I've shared this album with have absolutely loved it, whether they be absolute music snobs or casual music listeners.

I consider this a 2008 must have. Fleet Foxes' EP Sun Giant is also worthy of a good listen...or many.

Free Music Review: Refreshing and Beautiful
Hit: 5 Stars

For a band with members as young as 21, it's amazing that they are able to capture and build upon mid sixties pop rock so well. You can hear the influences of The Byrds - The Notorious Byrd Brothers, The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds and unreleased SMiLE sessions, and the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young catalog. Rather than just copy these artists, Fleet Foxes manages to incorporate some of the best elements of these bands and craft them into something new and refreshing. They have the vocal chops to pull it off too, with some of the best harmonies I've heard in a long time. Standout tracks are "Sun It Rises" and "White Winter Hymnal", but with repeated listenings, the entire release shows a band who is only just beginning to show what they are capable of. Fleet Foxes have a bright future ahead of them, and deserve a long and prosperous career in music. Very impressive and highly recommended.

Free Music Review: A full five from a Fleet Foxes fan
Hit: 5 Stars

I picked up this CD on a whim when seeing it in the "Customers Also Bought These Items" when looking at a Decemberists CD. At first, the CD did not speak to me, with the exception of White Winter Hymnal, and the songs generally sounded the same. After about 3 listens through however, I had achieved a greater appreciation for the melodies that had been sewn into this LP, and some of them stuck in my head for days (especially Ragged Wood). The vocals are outstanding, reminding me at times of the band America, but Fleet Foxes are also able to invoke elaborate mental images of train whistles and wind with their harmonization. Many of the songs are written in a progressive style, and at times you may think you are on a different track number than you actually are, but Fleet Foxes don't miss a beat in delivering an altogether solid album from start to finish.

Free Music Review: Beach Boys of Winter
Hit: 5 Stars

A previous review called this the "Beach Boys of Winter" which I thought was pretty cool, so that's the title of my short review.

Anyway, I got introduced to this by hearing "Blue Ridge Mountains" at a Starbucks while reading the paper. I've been introduced to a few good bands like this (anything that sticks out I write some lyrics down and go find the band album later).

Since then I got the whole album and have heard it several times. All the songs are great (although the opening of "White Winter Hymnal" can get on my nerves until the song gets into full swing).

The sound bites on Amazon ("listen" links) will give you an idea if you like this album or not. I still like "Blue Ridge Mountains" the best, that song I wish it would go on forever.
