Free Music Notes for Fleet FoxesFree Music Review: the Beach Boys of Winter Hit: 5 Stars
I heard something on WXPN that stirred me from my coffee and newspaper, but all I caught aside from the almost shape note singing was the name Fleet Foxes. Then someone I've been sharing musical knowledge with put in quite a few good words regarding this and Sun Giants. I eventually got around to picking this up at the local independant music store. I played it through a couple times and threw it on the pile. Then I started hearing it in the distance. A soft baroque chiming in the back of my head. Not the Zombies not Procol Harum nor Left Banke. Oddly rootsy. Sad like the last days of Summer. I ended giving it my full attention and played it over and over with special attention to Hymnal.
It was then I realized that they were the Beach Boys of Winter.
Free Music Review: Amazing must have Hit: 5 Stars
Yep. My Morning Jacket keeps popping up everywhere. The lead singer's vocals are a twin to Jimmy James' sound. My honest first impressions are that this band is what My Morning Jacket should have matured into but instead My Morning Jacket devolved into something extremely awful from "Z" and on. Any fan of My Morning Jacket's earlier, more indie sound will absolutely love Fleet Foxes. They fill that aching hole with what My Morning Jacket should have. The mix of folky, acoustic guitar, with hints of haunting gospel in beautiful, emotive, vocals, well, it all adds up to a unique, mature sound early on in their career. Let's just hope they don't follow My Morning Jacket's bad example and get worse with time instead of better.
Free Music Review: Everything old is new again...and then some!!!!! Hit: 5 Stars
There's something about Seattle that brings out creative individuality like no place else. Fleet Foxes' sound is a mix of everything I like: acoustic folk, rock, Baroque, excellent harmony.
You could have heard them in the Sixties....
You could have heard them in a Renaissance Court...
It's hard to pick a favorite among the eleven offerings here. "White Winter Hymnal" was what got me to make the purchase, but every time I listen another song gets put on repeat. I've never skipped a single number.
If you like folk, baroque, acoustic, just plain good music, at least sample what's offered on their page. You will probably end up hooked, too.

Free Music Review: Believe the hype... Hit: 5 Stars
For me, I'm always skeptical about rave reviews, and this album
is getting them across the board. But for once, I'm in total agreement.
There is some definite magic going on with this album (the EP is
it's equal too).
If anyone remembers and digs the late, great band Grant Lee Buffalo
(specifically the Mighty Joe Moon/Fuzzy albums) then get this album
pronto. It's cut from the same rural, pastoral cloth... and has
that similar rustic atmosphere that sucks you in instantly.
I hope these guys don't get burned by the hype, and have a nice long
career ahead of them... I'm looking forward to it!

Free Music Review: #1 On My Hit Parade Hit: 5 Stars
At first I thought the parts stronger than the sum. In other words, each song had elements that were captivating both lyrically and melodically but the songs as a whole didn't seem to work. Then at some point after repeated listens, everything started to bake into the cake it was meant to be. Now I can't get the damn thing of out the CD player and consequently out of my head. The band is a strange mix of all that has come before it, weather it be CSN, Beach Boys, Appalachia, and even some sort of strange nod to 50's white bread harmonies, a la the Fleetwoods. Whatever it is, it is totally captivating. I love having a favorite CD, and this year it will be Fleet Foxes.
