Free Music Review: Time To Say "Goodbye Baby" To This Legendary Band? No Way!!
Hit: 5 Stars

I LOVE Fleetwood Mac. They (along with Fanny) have been my favorite band for over 25 years now. That's why I feel so comfortable voicing my thoughts, both positive and negative, on their latest release, SAY YOU WILL. First off, Christine McVie is definitely missed. Her velvety warm vocals and sweet lyrics always perfectly offset Lindsey Buckingham's more self-indulgent moments and Stevie Nicks' more eccentric ones. That balance is sorely missing on SAY YOU WILL. Second, around five or six songs could have been cut from the final track listing, turning a very good album into a great, extra tight, one. And don't get me wrong....SAY YOU WILL is a VERY good album, but it's a good album that eventually buckles under the weight of it's own volume. This overabundance of riches also underscores and highlights the fact that SYW actually started out as a completed Buckingham solo disc (the aborted GIFT OF SCREWS), with a number of tracks being removed and replaced by Nicks compositions. When judging SYW on it's own merits, I found it best to break the CD into three groups, sort of a the Good, the Bad and the Ugly or, in this case, the Classic, the Good and the Disposable. Due to space constraints (and the fact that I want to concentrate on the disc's pluses!), I'll just say the Disposable cuts (for me!) that I would have dropped are "Red Rover", "Illume 9/11", "Say Goodbye", "Smile At You", "Running Through The Garden" and, especially, "Come" (don't EVEN get me started on this one!). So let's start with the Good batch. "Murrow Turning Over In His Grave" is Buckingham at his best, innovative without being over the top. With it's upper register vocal and plunking guitars, this track alone proves Fleetwood Mac is just as relevant in 2003 as they were in 1977. The only thing that could have improved this killer track would have been replacing the guitar blast ending with a more creative, toned-down one, akin to the one Buckingham laid down on Kim Carnes' "Begging For Favors." "Peacekeeper" is classic Fleetwood Mac (I particularly like Nicks' whispered "Leaves a trace"), while "Silver Girl" is a thoughtful tribute to Sheryl Crow ("She would have preferred/The last generation/But that's all right/She's on her way"). "Steal Your Heart Away" is one of Buckingham's most gorgeous compositions, but I do prefer the original version slated for GIFT OF SCREWS. That version was blessed simply by Christine McVie's clear, clean harmony vocal, while SAY YOU WILL's version is a tad bit too...busy. "Bleed To Love Her" builds on the promise shown on THE DANCE's live version, while "Destiny Rules" has a dark, forboding quality that is simply mesmerizing. And now for the Classic material...those six songs that would fit perfectly on any Fleetwood Mac album. SAY YOU WILL opens with the lilting "What's The World Coming To." With it's soaring chorus and knowing lyrics ("I can jump right off fall right into the ocean/I can come right out mean just what I say/But if I don't call for a reservation/They'll just turn me down turn me inside out"), the track instantly confirms the fact that Fleetwood Mac is anything but past their prime. This is also the case with "Thrown Down", a Nicks composition of exceptional grace and haunting beauty: "Faith is a hard thing/To hold on to/Something inside you says/I don't have to/You're not like other people/You do what you want to." If there were any justice in the world, this would be the next single....and it would be a huge hit! "Miranda" has an almost subversive quality to it, and it's amazing how well it works....Buckingham sounds eerie, Nicks comes across as hypnotic, and it all comes together in a pulsing mix, with masterful guitar work and an in-your-face chorus. I don't know why the disc's title track wasn't a bigger hit..."Say You Will" certainly isn't deep, but it's a classic love song that finds Nicks in top form. The vocals just melt out of your speakers, while the lyrics are some of the most honest, down-to-earth Nicks has ever written ("Something in you/Brought out something in me/That I've never been since/That part of me that was only for you/That kind of romance" and "That kind of touch, electricity of love/That certain kind of grace/That you love because you become/Someone else/In an instant"). Brilliant! Speaking of great singles, Reprise would be wise to release a remixed "Everybody Finds Out" to the clubs....this song has dance hit written all over it (Hey, if Nicks can hit #1 on the Dance charts with "Planets Of The Universe...!). SAY YOU WILL wraps up with the delicate "Goodbye Baby", one of Nicks' most beautiful songs ever. Her hushed lead vocal is both breathtaking and heartbreaking, and ranks as one of her two or three all-time best. A true masterpiece! So...while I think the true test will be the next Fleetwood Mac album, where the group works together from day one versus piecing together various solo projects, SAY YOU WILL is a strong enough addition to the Fleetwood Mac catalog to keep the doubters and nay-sayers quiet for some time to come.

Say You Will Poster

2003 album featuring both Stevie Nicks & Lindsey Buckingham, the first since 1987's triple-platinum Top 10 'Tango In The Night' & first release since 1997s 'The Dance'. The band also features John McVie & Mick Fleetwood plus guests artists, Sheryl Crow, Christine McVie, & Dave Palmer. This limited edition includes an exclusive bonus enhanced CD with four tracks, 'Love Minus Zero/No Limit', ' Not Make Believe', 'Peacekeeper' (live from AOL sessions), & 'Say You Will' (live from AOL sessions), along with behind the scenes footage, packaged in a digibook. Given their overarching history, Fleetwood Mac's 15-years-after studio reunion seems as unlikely as their initial, era-defining nova of success. Even cynics leery it's just another geezerfest payday should find this stripped-down edition of le Mac Classique (singer/songwriter/keyboardist Christine McVie opted out) bristling with a wealth of fresh, ambitious musical ideas. The responsibility for that creative renaissance rests squarely on the delicate shoulders of Lindsey Buckingham, more involved and motivated than he's been in any Mac project since the monumental Tusk. His crypto-folk structures and adventurous, Brian Wilson-inspired sonic textures are anything but predictable, illuminating "Miranda," "Red Rover," "Come," and even the mildly pedantic harangue "Murrow Turning Over in His Grave." With Christine McVie's poignant pop sense out of the mix, Stevie Nicks steps up with solid songcraft that rises beyond "Ilume"'s expected folk-mysticism to encompass other melancholy, age-defying feats like "Silver Girl," "Smile at You," "Goodbye Baby," and the title track. That duet with Buckingham argues that their vaunted creative axis may have lost its personal friction only to spin ever freer. And, like firm ground beneath the feet, it's too easy to take for granted the legendary Mick Fleetwood/John McVie rhythm section that gave the band its very name. Cut to its core dozen tracks, it's an album that easily stands comparison to their mega-platinum past. --Jerry McCulley
