Free Music Review: Shall we say ... Fleetwood Thud?

Does anyone else notice something different here?How many times had we read in mainstream news mags, fan mags, rock mags and other printed hype about the affairs, the breakups and heartbreaks about this band? Not a single personal detail escaped the media magnifying glass for years.
How many glitzy cover photos of air-brushed gods and goddesses have there been?
And in this era of dead, near-dead, un-dead 60s/70s bands and solo stars coming back to life to cash in with their ultimate greatest hits (Forty Licks, Wingspan, Beatles 1, the Who again, Dylan's 31 Flavors of Bootlegs, Elvis' whatever!) and all of the hype and pre-views, isn't it interesting to see virtually no promotion about this album?
Oh yeah, I bought it and slapped the CDs in the player. Same overplayed Rhiannon, Sara, and Gold Dust Woman with the same Stevie Nicks nasel drone. And there are the good moments which we've heard a gazillion times on AOR FM in the car, at work, in the elevators, in the burger joints, at Bill Clinton campaign rallies and on the home stereo. No surprises.
Why did I buy it? Artifact. Because I didn't buy any Mac since switching from vinyl to CD and decided this was as good as anything to fill the bill.
Reaction? It's background music to cut the noise from the neighboring cubicles. It fills the need without overpowering. It is always the same, no matter where you go and no matter the time of day. Maybe it's a Big Mac -- but it's the Very Best of the Big Mac.
To think these folks dominated magazine covers and the Billboard charts for so long! Amazing! In their long stint at the top, you would think every rock writer/reporter/photographer owned nothing but Fleetwood Mac and various Mac solo albums. Times have changed.
Of of today's release date, there still hasn't been an editorial review from Amazon (maybe you're still trying to listen through all 36 tunes). In fact, the tunes had not been listed on the Amazon site, whereas far lesser known and appreciated acts get the whole shebang -- some of them weeks before release.
Amazon's not the only one. There are no reviews or previews in other magazines or major websites. The Rolling Stones got a five star review from Rolling Stone's writers for recycling yet another multiple disc best of. Nothing for "The Very Best of Fleetwood Mac." I'm not carping about the publicity, other than to say this says something about how this album will probably be received. No surprises. But where are the surprises in the other greatest hit compilations?
Don't think I'm disappointed. Let's face the music and dance. Maybe the Mac's 15 minutes finally are up.
And now Miss Peggy Lee ... "is that all there is?"
