Free Music Notes for Tusk (Deluxe Edition)

Free Music Review: a Magnificent Mess
Hit: 5 Stars

My opinion of Tusk itself hasn't changed much since I bought the LP back in 1979. It was a welcome 180 degree turn from Rumours, which preceded it. Lyrically and musically it's just a mess - a stew, if you will - but that's not a bad thing. It's just all over the place. Lindsey's Buckingham's songs reek of cocaine paranoia, Stevie Nicks' songs are the same mystical/romantic tunes, and Christine McVie's songs are still beautifully crafted and full of hooks - pure pop celebration. The only differences here ( which for me makes this a 5 star album, not the 4 stars I gave it when first released on cd ) are the improvement in sound overall. IT SOUNDS FANTASTIC. Especially when heard with a good set of headphones. There's so much going on, buried in the mix, background vocals that I never heard before, things like that. Also, the full length version of Sara is here, like it was on the original LP. The bonus disc of demo recordings and out takes are for fans only, an interesting look into the process of recording itself.

Free Music Review: Incredible Second Disc
Hit: 5 Stars

Like one of the previous reviewers, I also greatly anticipated the release of this album in '79. I thought Rumours was too poppy and commercial, but it showed the tremendous promise held in this fresh Mac line up. The pre-release publicity back then was that this record was taking an almost unimaginable amount of time and money to make, and the result was going to be worth it. I couldn't wait. When I picked it up on the day it was released, I loved half the album. I felt the "strange" material that Buckingham recorded was trash. Over the years, I have gradually warmed to these songs, and upon hearing the second disc in this release, I am totally won over. In fact, most of the versions on the second disc are superior. They are less commercial and polished than disc one, and they are like a breath of fresh air. To top it all off, the second disk has the songs arranged in the same order as the original, so it's as if you're listening to the Tusk that could have been - and you are!

Free Music Review: possibly FM's best album
Hit: 5 Stars

I just had the pleasure of listening to this album after a long time. The re-mastering brings out depth and clarity to these tracks, which is lacking in the previous CD version. It is like listening to Tusk all over again. I'm not sure I ever understood where critics were going with descriptions like post-punk and avant-garde and new wave (when I think new wave, I think Duran Duran and Blondie), though there are songs on here that remind me of The Pretenders. But what I can say is that this effort is genuine and idiosyncratic. It has much more of a "jam" feel to it that's fresh and different from Rumours, which can sound over-polished. Highlights includes Stevie's "Angel", Christine McVie's "Honey Hi" and Lindsey Buckingham's quirky "The Ledge" and the title track, probably one of the most innovative pop-rock songs ever written. It took me a very long time to appreciate this album, this re-mastering playing no small part in helping me to realize its true brilliance.

Free Music Review: The best of the Fleetwood Mac deluxe editions
Hit: 5 Stars

Okay so I've heard some good and bad reviews for this cd. Originally Tusk got piss poor reviews for not being oh-so-Rumours but now suddenly everyone's like wait it's cool to be ahead of the game so rock on Gold Dust Woman and even to you Lindsey Buckingham. The second disc is hardly a dissapointment. The 8 minute version of Sara is so beautiful by the end you'll have endorphins and adrenaline and all those wonderful natural chemicals running through yr body (and the wind became crazy...). Beautiful Child with an electric guitar totally works as like a dark, rock lullabye like most of the other tracks, ahead of its time. Lindsey's tracks are undeniably punk rock and just over all totally fun to listen to. Buckingham and Nicks are totally timeless, like a legend or a fairy-tale, a love story that no one can ever forget because in this day an age we have physical evidence that the events took place. Sending my love with all my heart...

Free Music Review: Don't overlook this great album!
Hit: 5 Stars

Let's face it, to me most double albums throughout the history of rock have been pretty good. The Beatles "The Beatles", "Electric Ladyland", "Blonde on Blonde", even "Speakerboxx/The Love Below" are all pretty darn good. If you would ask most people if the follow up to "Rumours", Fleetwood Mac's "Tusk", was a success they'd most likely say no. These people however would be very wrong. If you're a fan of Mac there's no reason that you shouldn't own this CD. Especially now that the album in it's entirety is on one CD, remastered. The album has 21 songs, I'll admit that there are some songs, mostly Lindsey Buckingham's that could be thrown away. These songs do however give the album it's uniqueness. The star of the album is Stevie Nicks. Her songs are as good as any in her or Mac's catalog. If you like Fleetwood Mac there's no reason you shouldn't have this in your collection. I enjoy "Tusk" just as much as "Rumours" and I think you will too.
