Free Music Notes for Flight of the ConchordsFree Music Review: The really funny thing is... Hit: 5 Stars
The really funny thing is, that the humor aside, this is just a really good album. (CD... project... whatever...)
If you aren't listening to the lyrics and just have it on the background you'll find the rhythms and sounds a little retro and old school sometimes.. but just extremely well done.
Unlike lots of comedy music acts, these guys are actually incredibly talented musicians with an incredible gift for song writing and musicality.
It's true what a couple reviews have said, that much of it is funnier and fresher in sound and and feel in the much more pared down live acoustic versions.
But it is kind of apples and oranges to me... and it all makes a nice salad.
I've found myself humming one or another of these songs for the past two weeks and, again-and-again - it is what I reach for to put in while I'm just surfing the web or whatever.
Often I'm not even listening intently to the lyrics and laughing any more... I'm just not thinking about it and grooving to the groove.
Best CD I've bought in a long time really.

Free Music Review: The most enjoyable CD in the room (in the whole wide room) Hit: 5 Stars
Flight of the Conchords are the reigning kings of musical comedy. I first came across their TV show late one night by sheer chance and loved it instantly. Their quirky and ludicrous sense of humour can always raise a chuckle, even from this Australian mutha'ucka.
This album has a lot of tracks from the first series. Unfortunately some of the gems were left out (eg. 'The Tape of Love', and I would have enjoyed full versions of 'Bret You've Got it Going On' and 'Who Likes to Rock the Party?'). But there is still so much to enjoy. Highlight tracks for me are 'Think About It', 'Ladies of the World' and 'Inner City Pressure'. 'It's Business Time' is a classic song that tells you just about everything you need to know about male psychology.
You will probably get more out of this album if you have seen the series, but regardless it is still a great listening experience. Also, in addition to being funny most of the tracks have excellent melodic lines and grooves - it is a good album in any sense.
Free Music Review: Brilliant bits of high-flying satire Hit: 5 Stars
This CD is one of those that must be listened to over and over again. It targets the pompous pretentions of today's music business -- which covers quite a lot of ground. Much of the duos' satire is aimed at rap and hip-hop, but a fair amount at the flavahful grooves of funky and soul. Pieces like "Mutha'uckas" uses a sweet beat and relentless, almost-foul-mouthed lyrics about a bank statement to lampoon hip-hop. "Business Time" skewers hyper-sexual funk hits with a macho swing that doesn't. But the big hits are not satirical as much as observant and self-deprecating. "Foux du Fafa" plays on a couple of would-be playas faking French ("Jacques Cousteau? Pamplemousse!") to get in with a couple of fresh French girls. "Robots" sings a monotone about a mechanical takeover of the world. And "The Most Beautiful Girl (In the Room)" mocks the too-honest not-quite compliments of a man on the make at a party.
The music is terrific, the humor is top-notch and the perception of human frailty is spot on. A masterpiece!
Free Music Review: Bret and Jemaine rock the flippin' house! Hit: 5 Stars
Love these guys. I will freely admit, it took me a few viewings before I "got" Flight of the Conchords on HBO. At first it just seemed weird and silly to me. Then, much like Monty Python, Bob Dylan, Woody Allen (geniuses I didn't quite "get" at first), something clicked. Their humor is sarcastic, dry, witty, and sometimes surreal (see "Bowie") but always inspired. Furthermore, after several listens you will appreciate how well-written and complex some of their songs are. Besides, this CD is worth the price for "Rhymeasouras versus Hiphoppopotomus" alone (sorry that I butchered the spellings there...forgive me...but the song cracks me up). These guys mimic all kinds of genres, but the one constant in all their songs is their goofy outlook on the world and their subtle, dry wit. Love it! Can't wait for season 2! This CD will hopefully tide me over...hey guys, how about a full-length live album sometime? That would be sweet!
Free Music Review: THE GREATEST ALBUM SINCE THE INVENTION OF RECORDED MUSIC! Hit: 5 Stars
Everything we need know about life, love, relationships, and music is contained in this cd. Buy "Flight of the Conchords" now and you'll never want to buy another cd again. The New Zealand brain trust is in the house, and it's your chance for a $10 consultation. Dr. Phil, Dr. Laura, Judge Judy, Oprah: retire now because Bret and Jemaine are on the job. This cd should be the cornerstone of any record collection. Throw out your Dylan, give away your Stones, say goodbye to Springsteen (keep your Bromberg): "Flight of the Conchords" renders those recordings shabby and quaint. If you love smart, sophisticated, wry entertainment, look no further. Buy one cd for the house, one for the Prius, one for the cubicle, one to jam into your Ipod, and one for your girlfriend's love shack. On a scale of one star to five stars, this cd rates a galaxy!!!
